View Full Version : Smitfraud_C.Toolbar888 trouble. Help!
I'm having a problem with Smitfraud_C.Toolbar888. Norton Internet Security 2007, SpyBot (not Immunized), and Adaware SE were installed before the SmitFraud hit. SpyBot can remove the SmitFraud in SafeMode, but it returns with a boot to normal Windows. The problem seems to have started when several e-mails were downloaded to Outlook. I have not reopened Outlook since the problem. Norton Int Security blocked Trojan.Vundo, Infostealer, and Winfixer. I disabled Windows system restore and ran NIS Trojan.Vundo removal tool before I found this forum.

I ran the CA on-line virus scanner at the eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner link. No problems were found. I thought I was e-mailing the log file to myself (it was just a link to the scanner), so I don't have a log file.

If you issues are not resolved, then please do this:
1) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

2) Rename HijackThis.exe call it Levator.exe or whatever you wish.
3) Make sure you have the newest version of Spybot, all databases are up to date and immunize.
Restart the computer and post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix and a new HJT log.

Thank you for your response and help. I had read the "Before you Post" and Four days. It has been 6 days since my original post, but I was out of town.
I still have the Smitfraud Toolbar problem.
I renamed HijackThis.exe to Levator.exe, I have Spybot current and immunized, I rebooted to normal Windows and ran SmitFraudFix(option 1 only) and Levator.exe.

Thanks for returning your information. You have a Vundo infection, nothing is showing in Smitfraud, you may remove that tool from your computer. Make sure Spybot is totally up to date and immunized. Once we finish cleaning Vindo, if Spybot is finding anything it can't remove, post here:

I will post all of the information you need at once, I can tell you folks who read and follow the directions have few problems with this removal.
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) SpywareGuard will block changes we must make, right click SG in the system tray, then click File on the console and exit. It will be put back on reboot.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"
4) Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post the Vundofix report, a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

I followed your directions. While in Safe Mode, I updated Spybot online, and the immunize was current. I also updated Norton Inernet Security, offline, with virus definitions dated 5-29-2007. I have been trying to avoid normal mode and internet access; this computer has been isolated (cable unplugged) from our other computer (it seems OK) on a wired LAN and router since the problem started. I copied VundoFix.exe and ATF Cleaner from cd. When I rebooted to windows normal mode, a Norton popup said Trojan.vundo had been identified and removed. I rebooted to normal windows, and SpywareGuard still kept flagging the BHO change and jkkjj.dll. I exited SpywareGuard and ran VundoFix (log is below). After the reboot, SpywareGuard still showed the BHO change so I ran VundoFix a second time (it did not automatically run on the reboot)- it did not find any problems. The JAVA 1.4.2.3 was removed through add/remove (I could'nt get add/remove to run in safe mode when I found it last week). At shut down I still got the pop up End Program message about ShellIconHiddenWindow that I have been getting unless SpyBot has removed what it calls SmitFraud_C.Toolbar888 in safe mode. Rebooted and ran VundoFix and no problems were found. HijackThis log is below. HijackThis scan only then deleted the BHO jkkjj.dll. The mvcitffg.dll was not in the HJT or on the C:\. ATF cleaner ran fine. Rebooted to normal windows with no problems. SpyBot now only shows Windows Sec Central, and SpywareGuard is quiet. The new HJT log is in the next post.

I notice this Spybot item running as your StartPage:

You can use HJT to remove them if you wish. You may have to exit SpywareGuard to do it, but it will return on a reboot.
You may rename HJT if you wish and delete all tools you downloaded for the cleaning. The exception is ATF-Cleaner, it is a nice small tool and keep it if you wish.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

If you want to run a good free trial to check for hidden junk, use this one with these instruction, delete or quarantine anything it finds and post the scan results if you have questions.

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Everything seems to be OK now. I do get nervous when I get heavy hard drive activity (not during program launches or scans).
Thank you very much for the help and the information. I have not been able to get the downloaded AVG to update (server not ready), so I ran the online AVG scan. It only found and deleted several cookies. I still have not started MS Outlook to check e-mails, where I think the problem started. My wife doesn't remember clicking any downloads or opening any files, but it looks to me that this Trojan would have to come from opening a file. Since things are up to date with definitions and windows and I have SpyBot, NIS NAV and Firewall, Adaware, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, Windows Defender, and AVG Antispyware I guess I'll try to check e-mail.
Two more question? The IE-SPYAD site recommended against using IE-SPYAD in conjunction with SpywareBlaster and Spybot. Do you still recommend adding IE-SPYAD? Also do I need to install or run any of these programs separately on other log-ins on this computer?

That does not have to be unusual, you have many programs, in fact more than you probably should which is why I posted the link for you with information about exactly that problem and how to use MSConfig to control programs running. Many of those programs will constantly be reaching out to the internet for one thing or another.

SpyBot, NIS NAV and Firewall, Adaware, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, Windows Defender, and AVG Antispyware Good programs, I am not a Symantec fan, but some folks swear it. Spybot, SpywareBlaster and SpywardGuard do not run. The jury is still out on Windows Defender, though I notice Microsoft is updating it almost daily now (another reason for disk activity) and timely updates might make it more effective. AVG (unless you purchase it) should be turned off and disabled in services then used as an on demand occaisional scan. (updates are free)
Now you threw me with saying IE-Spyad is not to recommended with SB/SG, I have been running all three on all of my computers for years. Could you link me to that information. If this is something new, I personally would look at this Hosts file to replace IE-Spyad. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Also do I need to install or run any of these programs separately on other log-ins on this computer?Not quite sure what you are asking me here?
