SOMEHOW 2 days after a fresh format i got a virus through limewire my bad choice in downloads:oops:, i was seeminly able to remove it with avast, but the next day i starting experiancing issues like avast wasnt starting up on startup and so on, so i uninstalled and reinstalled, it didnt work, it now runs at startup but is disabled and CANT be reinabled :( so i got AdAware SE scanned it found a LOT of spyware/adware (24 infections) i deleted them, then i was STILL getting popups which i started getting the day AFTER that fatal limewire download, so anyways, i was at TAFE and was reminded about SpyBot SD, (lol i forgot about it) anyways i installed it, scanned, usual story found SmitFraud (FINALLY!) cant remove it and so on, did a safemode restart ran SpyBot SD no go, didnt fix any SmitFraud issues, it is on the latest definitions, then recently i used whats called the Ultimate Boot CD, it contains SpyBot SD i ran that, that was able to remove some smitfraud, but i still cant remove it all. So i came here seeking your expertise.

Hello.

This malware removal forum is manned by volunteers, it is not a shop. ;)

I see you have posted here:
If you have waited FOUR days for advice post here. (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=4836#post4836) :)

It is a holiday weekend in more than one country, helpers are doing their best to assist people but the forum is unusually busy.

Regards.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.

Please make sure you reviewed and understand the above instructions.

See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 <<< out of date, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.

SpyBot keeps picking up smitfraudhttp://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668 <<< see this
If your Spybot version is totally up to date, and it is finding anything it can not remove, post here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4
and ask the Spybot experts about it.

You keep saying Smitfraud, and that infection can be hidden, do this to find out:
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Tell me about these popups, where are they directing you to, what do they want you to purchase.

Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, delete or quarantine what it finds and post the scan report.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

Restart the computer and post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix, the scan report from AVG Anti-Spyware and the information I requested.

Thanks

Let me first say, sorry if i was seeming impatient. And Thank You for your help.

Ok, I have updated the Java Runtime Environment, It is now at version 6 update 1.

I have ran the smitfraudfix.exe and that log is attached,

I have ran an AVG Anti Spyware scan, and that report is attached.

Now, these popups, When Spybot S&D detected smitfraud first time around, it DID remove SOME of its elements, which in turn stopped the popups from appearing, BUT i know for certain the smitfraud is still there, as SpyBot Pics it up still.
But when we were still getting the popups, they would never actually completly load, they would start in Internet Explorer, attempt to load a page sorry but i lost that address, and then the page would stop loading and just say, "Check you internet connections, Page Could Not Load"
So i was never aware of what they were asking me to purchase. If you wish it, i MAY still be able to restore what Spybot S&D removed, then obtain the address that way

"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All logs should be copy/pasted into topic and not attached unless requested by helper in that format.

I would appreciate it if you would take the time to read an follow the directions. Post only what I request, if I need more information I will request it.

Thanks

Smitfraudfix is clean, you may remove it from your computer. While I am thinking about it, if your version of Spybot is up to date, all data bases are current and everything is immunized, then anything Spybot finds and can't remove may be a false positive? See this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668
Take a look first as the information may already be posted, if not, then post here: http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4 and ask the Spybot experts about it.

AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report

If you need instructions for controlling cookies in IE or Firefox, let me know and I will post it.

The first three items in quarantine are real nasties, follow these instructions to get them off your computer:
Clean the quarantine folder
You can remove the files from the AVG AS Quarantine:
-Launch AVG AS and click the Infections button.
-Click the Quarantine tab
-Choose: Select All
-Click: Remove finally
-A window pops asking "Are you sure you want to remove the selected files...??"
-Select: Yes

The fourth is in System Restore and can't get back on the computer unless you use SR. We will clean those files before we are done, but I do not like seeing the "rootkit" word. Let's have a look to see if anything is there:

Please download F-Secure BlackLight Beta:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml

Save it to its own folder in the Desktop
Double-click blbeta.exe to run the program
Click : Scan
A list of all items found is created

The list is in the BlackLight folder on the Desktop, and named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx are numbers).

Please provide the log created by BlackLight in your next reply.

(do not remove anything, most if not all files will be valid)

Please look at this information just in the event issues exist that are not malware related.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/IEtopten.mspx

Post the log from BlackLight and a fresh HJT log. Please let me know how the computer is performing now and and any comments or questions you have.

Cheers...Phil

The blacklight log is below, as is the Hijack This log,
I do have a few questions,

1) My AVAST anti virus has been disabled ever since we were infected by what ever it was, (smitfraud, rootkit...) and everytime i attempt to Enable it it wont, it just remains disabled, i have tryed a reinstall of it but it didnt work, would 1 of the infections our computer have/had cause this???

2) Other than spybot S&D, what would the NEXT best AntiSpyware scanner you would recommend, to assist in protection?

3)Our computer LCD monitor very regualy flashes, what i mean by that is it goes black for a second, then comes back, i have checked power connections, so its not a cable, And refresh rate is good, Could spyware or another form of malicious code cause this?? The flashing occurs ATLEAST 1ce every 5 -10 minutes, and before i formated the computer it didnt occur, it only seems to be after the format, and the Program/Drivers CD that came with the monitor has been installed!?!?!?

The computer itself is performing, a little better, But AVAST remains disabled, and wont turn back on,

Thanks for the feedback, Blacklight is clean so chances are you do not have a rootkit infection.

Not being a user of Avast (I understand it is a good program) I can't say if Avast has been damaged by malware. Have you tried uninstalling the program completely then installing it again?
If that does not work, then this is a good anti-virus program. (Don't confuse anti-virus with anti-spyware, two different functions)
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ <<< stick with "free" stay away from trials, etc.
Run only one anti-virus program at a time.

I have been dealing with malware for so long, I will have to suggest you take your monitor issues to experts on those problems. I would try the website of the manufacturer first, they usually have troubleshooting and FAQ areas to help and often technical support.
or try one of the online help forums: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=monitor+help+forums&btnG=Search
folks here are very knowledgeable: http://forums.tomcoyote.org/Other_Computer_Problems_f83.html
and here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum65.html
If that is the wrong bleeping ofrum, they will direct you on.

I will post information from experts in the field, after you review that information if you still have questions, post them.

I want to mention that you may use HJT to remove any of those hp redirects R1/R0 that are in your HJT log. You can still set any homepage you want
and all of those redirects are not making you browser run better.
Remove this dead line while you are at it. Rest of the log looks good.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Thank You PSKELLEY

All appears good, Even the screen flickering appears fixed, mind you, it appeared to be fixed after i emptyed my full desktop :D

Avast Appears to be working now, correctly, Spybot still does pick up smitfraud which means it has to be a false positive, so i will post that soon.
I have removed the old system restore points, I have also removed the lines in the HJT log file you requested me to.

So all in all, the computer seems to be back to its regular self, thank you.

If you would like a follow up HJT log, i will provide it,

Have a good one mate.:bigthumb:

Just an update:
I got avast to get back online and running, I had to download a new version, apparently that can be a bug in it :D
So avast is going,
The screen flickering is GONE! (assuming it was a full desktop, to much to refresh issue :D)
And spybot is no longer picking up smitfraud, for some reason, i havnt updated since yesterday when it still picked it up, but today GONE :D im thinking it may have been removed during restart.

And finally, my computer is back to its usuall full speed.
Thanx Guys

Post a new HJT log and describe your issue, post any error messages word for word.

If this concerns Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/technical_support.html

If you need another free AV:

This new issue, is random popup advertising windows, in the form of javascript.
I have scanned with avast, Avg, and spybot, but non of them found anything, the system still performs at its proper speed too.

These popups are saying (from screenshot):

<amaena.com>
NOTICE: If your computer has been running slower than normal, it may be infected with Viruses, Adware or Spyware.
WinAntiVirusPRO can perform a quick and complete FREE scan of your system for malicious programs.
Download WinAntiVirus PRO FREE now!

Now obviously i didnt just ignored these popups. But after clicking CANCEL to that popup, another one appeared which was basically just stating that i could still be infected and i should scan.
After also ignoring that one and clicking cancel, i was about to shut down my computer when i saw a .exe (or .ink) on the desktop called
NeroStartSmart.ink.exe
now even i know that 2 extensions is bad i deleted this file, without issue, before it did something unexpected.

This time i know for a fact i was NOT downloading anything at all simple surfing the the internet!
The website i was in at the time was the relic forum's website, WHICH may have been the cause of a drive by download or something other.

Also, After getting advice from here and a few other places, i brought AVG Internet Security in the end.

G'Day, it means you have gotten yourself infected again. I had you update Java to give you the additional protections, remember:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2 <<< and gave you a good warning, let me show you a couple of links I posted in a recent newsletter:
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/05/the_next_net_th.html

Here is some information about this infection:
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/search.aspx?q=winfixer+msn
http://www.revenews.com/wayneporter/archives/adware-spyware-greynets/getting_the_fix_on_winfixer_aol_network_now/

I am not seeing the infection but the Winfixer popups are a sure clue. There is a version that runs a rootkit, I hope this is not it. I want to look at a log with a newer version of HJT but before we start you must get rid of one of the antivirus programs you are running, see this:
You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\
C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\

Once you get one of those off the computer, then do this:
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download
Download it to your Program Files folder.
Doubleclick the HijackThis_V2.exe to start it.
Click "Do a System Scan and save a logfile"
This will create a HijackThislog.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply

Cheers

G'Day, nothing showing in the HJT log? Still getting popups asking you to purchase Winfixer?

Please download F-Secure BlackLight Beta:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml

Save it to its own folder in the Desktop
Double-click blbeta.exe to run the program
Click : Scan
A list of all items found is created

The list is in the BlackLight folder on the Desktop, and named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx are numbers).

Please provide the log created by BlackLight in your next reply.

(do not fix anything, some if not all files will be valid)

Thanks

No im not still getting the popups, in fact, these popups only occurd the one time, which makes me wonder weather it was the websites advertising, and not on my system at all, because everything says its clean, and it was a javascript

Looks good:bigthumb: I am sure you were surprised by how dangerous it is to surf the web anymore. I personally go where I need to and no where else. It is a shame the internet has gotten to this. You understand $$$ and organized crime are the driving forces. Safe surfing...Phil

Yeah, generally speaking i stick to where i need to be as well, besides, these forums i was in (where the popup occurd) are Relic Entertainment 's (the PC game company's) offical "unoffical" forums, so they are lagitament forums with no illegal content,
but thanks for the help anyways. Damn internet, whats it coming too

You would not believe how many valid sites have malware links posted at them by hackers. We usually find them quickly and notify the valid websites (some of the biggies too) but folks do get infected before the junk can be taken down. With an exploit possibility like out of date Java (but others also, Java is not alone) all it takes is for the mouse to move over an infected banner at a valid site for the exploit to happen. No actions on the part of the user are needed other than to be where they think they are safe.

Cheers
