Hi jubsickles

I've merged both your threads... please reply by using the Post Reply button at the bottom of this post.

All your logs are clean, the only sign of any smitfraud infection was this entry in your first log, and as you can see the file had already been removed.

What problems were you having and are you still having them ?

thanks for the quick response (and for merging the two posts... makes perfect sense now to have posted one thread with two logs and then replied to it w/ the other two logs :banghead: )

the biggest problem i am experiencing is that my computer is running slow. opening programs seems to take several seconds, or at least several seconds longer than before the spy axe problem appeared. everything seems to be a bit 'sluggish' for lack of a better word. scrolling with the trackpad had been affected, but after completely shutting down, and then restarting, that problem seems to have been corrected for the most part.

things are certainly much better now, although things just seem a bit delayed when opening / utilizing various programs.

thanks again for the help and information! :bigthumb:

cheers!

Hi

Try a cleanup of unnecessary files

Download CCleaner from :-

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ (click the download tab)

doubleclick the ccsetup.exe file and install the program...

After installing, go to Start > programs > CCleaner > Options > Advanced > UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

Make sure the "windows" tab is selected

Under "internet explorer" tick...

Temporary internet files
Cookies* > see Note below
History
Recently typed URL's (leave this unticked if you DON'T want to clear the drop down list in the address window of IE)
Delete index.dat files
Last download location
Autocomplete form history

under "Windows explorer" these are optional, but you can safely tick them all if you wish, they are only "most recently used lists"

Other explorer MRU's (leave this unticked if you DON'T want to clear lists such as the start\run list)

under "System"

Tick ALL these ...

under "Advanced"

no need to tick any of these (but you can if you want, and realise what they do)

Applications tab...

These will mostly clean out old log files for these applications...

Clean:- (if you use them)

Firefox/Mozilla (optional - leave the cookies - see note)
Opera
Sun Java
ZoneAlarm
...
Personally I clean everything in the applications tab... but you tick what you want...

Note: *If there are any cookies you want to keep (if you remove the cookie for a site you require a password for, you will need to re-enter your passward when you next visit that site) ... click options > cookies > then keep the cookies you want.

click "analyse" if you want to see a list of what is going to be removed, before it is removed.

Or

click "run cleaner" to let it get on with it's work... clicking this will result in the following pop-up

"This process will permanently delete files from your system. Are you sure you wish to proceed?"

click OK.

cheers

steam,

i performed a cleanup of files using ccleaner, and that seemed to help a great deal. things seem to be working much better, and i would say near the point before the spy axe.

-performed a spybot search&destroy scan and found no problems.

-performed a microsoft antispyware scan and found two files seemingly connected w/ the spy axe. one file was deleted, one was quarantined. after rebooting the quarantined file was removed. after shutting down and restarting the following day, another microsoft antispyware scan was run, and no problems were found.

thanks again for the extremely useful information. i would say that things are back to normal, or very close to it about 95%+ as far as perfomance. i do notice that when running multiple programs, some sluggishness occurs when opening a new program.

cheers! :beerbeerb

HI

Glad to hear it helped:)

As for "i do notice that when running multiple programs, some sluggishness occurs when opening a new program."

This could be due to low resources...

How big is your harddrive ? how much free space do you have left ?

How much RAM do you have ?

well, i have a 40 gig hard drive, with about 4 gig of space left and 512MB of ram...

however..... i just ran a spybot search&destroy scan and there were 16 spy axe files found in the scan

so, now i'm at a loss. just when it appeared that everything was back to normal and all traces of spy axe were gone, it seems to have found it's way back again...

thoughts? insights? ideas???????? help!

HI

Your harddrive is pretty full now, windows needs space on the hard drive to move files and run programs, once you get to less than 10% free space it starts to affect the performance...

Post the spybot log and a new hijackthis log

ok, think i'm going to clean up my hard drive a li'l bit more to create some more useable space and get rid of crap i don't use anyway...

here's the spybot and hijackthis logs. oh, and the windows security center override is due to a slight conflict with mcafee. the laptop (from dell) originally came with a subscription to mcafee, and over time i guess that subscription has lapsed. when i signed up w/ verizon for dsl, it included mcafee antivirus. now i get an error message from dell support security center saying that my antivirus protection is out of date, unless i override it by stating that i have an antivirus program that i will monitor myself... (i'm going to contact mcafee to see if this can be easily resolved)

HI

Don't worry, you don't have any spyaxe files on your computer... these are registry keys...

Copy the contents of the quote box to a new notepad file (make sure there are no spaces before or above the REGEDIT4)

Go to file > save as > file name spyaxe.reg

Save as type all files > save it to your desktop.

Double click on the spyaxe.reg which you have created on your desktop and allow it to merge with the registry.

Run spybot again and see if those entries are still there... they shouldn't be.

REDEDIT4

i did as instructed, but got the following registry editor error message:

Cannot import C:\Documents and Settings\justin\Desktop\spyaxe.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

Sorry about that...

The quote box should read REGEDIT4 not REDEDIT4

The first D should be a G

lol... it's all good :bigthumb:

well, followed change, ran spybot again, and no problems found. hopefully it remains that way...

also cleaned up the hd a bit, and dumped some music files... now have a li'l over 15 gig of space available. hopefully that will help.

thanks again for all the hints, help, and insight!
