I followed another thread on here as best I could. I couldnt shake this thing out. I have loaded the programs that were suggested in the removal of this from that thread here. I wasnt comfortable doing a couple of the things mentioned since my own log wasnt shown. I updated and ran spybot in safemode until the red items were gone as directed just before now. I have my hijack this program in c: so its not on the desktop. I do not have the program operating installed in two different areas though, is this okay, im trying to follow the instructions? There is a backups folder installed with it where its located. Unfortunately this is not my own computer, and will be used most likely before its fixed due to its needs here. Here is my hijack log:

Hello terryjr24 and welcome to the Forums :)

Sorry for the delay...

Let's begin with this:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Thank you for your help MR_JAK3. Since I didnt post it the first time here is what happens. When going to hotmail on IE, once logged in and the mail page is opened up the bottom left corner of the screen starts going crazy with site addresses, some that I see are rad msn com, fastclick, and multiple others. When going into hotmail on firefox, a box appears saying it wants to install ADSClient31.dll. Here is the scan you requested.

The issue is related to the MSN adverts...FireFox doesn't use the same components as IE so this is why some things are not displayed correctly.

Let's see if restoring the hosts file helps.

Right click the running icon of Spywareguard in the system tray to open the program. Then go to Menu, File, and choose Exit. It will automatically restart at next boot.

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

We'll reset your hosts file. If you used a customized hosts file you need to set that again after the cleaning. Download free! HostsXpert v3.8 from here: Link (http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip)

Unzip the zip file to your desktop and run the program. Click on the button to "Restore Microsoft's Hosts File", follow any prompts.

Restart the computer and see how the MSN site works now :bigthumb:

MR_JAK3, before I do this I need to ask, will it be necessary to save the favorites stored in internet explorer so they aren't removed or will this process bother any of that? I need to make sure I don't lose anything that is not infected or someones gonna be upset with me here! :)

Mr_JAk3

Hello :)

You're favourites will not be removed if you follow these instructions. Though it is always best to have backups...

Hello :)

Ok...it is normal that those adresses are in the corner. MSN has all kinds of adverts and cookies that need to be loaded. So this isn't malware related.

If you want to block cookies and advertisments (bad ones), these two tools should be worth a try:

Install SpywareBlaster (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.

Install MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.

MR_JAK3,

It confuses me that the person who owns the computer "suddenly" had problems getting into msn mail repeatably because of these adverts/cookies loading continuously to the point of a long waiting game to just get into the screen that shows all of the mail? You are a security expert so I believe in your analysis. So long as the user of the computer is not skeptical its fixed and does not push for a second opinion then this matter is resolved. Is there any clean up of programs I should remove now that it's done? Thank you very much MR_JAK3 for your help you have freely given us. I appreciate it a lot.

Terry

Hello :)

Ok I made some more research. You haven't made any changes to the hosts file on purpose?
In that case it is best to do some changes...

Restart the computer.

See how the MSN site works now. Let me know.

MR_JAK3,

I went through the steps and deleted the items you listed on the hijack this log, and reset the hosts file. After a restart it ran hijack this again to verify those items were gone, but they were now back. I repeated this procedure 5 times in total making sure to use my atf cleaner before hand. They come back after every restart. I made sure spyware guard was closed also. They dont go away.

Thanks, Terry

Hi :)

Well that is very interesting.

Make a new folder in the C:\drive called silentrunners
Download 'silent runners" from here: (direct download)
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs
Save it to your silentrunners folder.

Click start> run> type cmd and hit enter
Type the following exactly and hit enter after each line.
cd c:\silentrunners and hit enter
"silent runners.vbs" -all and hit enter

Wait until it pops up saying its completed, then post the resulting logfile here
It will be very large. You may need several posts to include everything

Ok let's try this.

Download and unzip hosts.zip from HERE (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip) to a folder (hosts).

When you get a chance please read more about what we are doing HERE (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm).

Here's a Tutorial (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts2.htm) on how to install it, but it's installed like this:

Open up the hosts folder and double-click on the mvps.bat file, it will rename your present HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the new HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine. It happens very quickly so don't blink!

Restart the computer.

Copy and paste that information in your next post along with a fresh HijackThis log

Hmm, for some reason when I click the mvps.bat file, it pops up the dos looking screen and says press any key to continue. I press a key and the box dissapears and nothing else happens. You said it would change my host file to HOSTS.MVP so I searched for this folder and its not found so I dont think its installed and changed?

Hmm that's interesting. Please post a fresh HijackThis log :bigthumb:

This must be something nasty to hang on this long with these removers?

Hello :)

Hmm maybe the hosts file is just locked.(Do you get any warnings when you've tried to replace it with hostsxpert?)

Let's try with these better instructions:

Download HostsXpert (http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip) and unzip it to your desktop.

Open HostsXpert that you earlier unzipped on your desktop

Click "Make Hosts Writable?" upper right corner (if available)
Click "Restore Microsoft's Original Hosts File" and then click OK
Close HostsXpert
Note; IF you used any custom Hosts (eg. MVPS Hosts), you will have put them back manually

Now reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log. If this doesn't work we'll replace the hosts file manually. :bigthumb:

MR_JAK3, the hosts file is unlocked and has been. It shows in the top left corner on mine. I ran hijack this and checked the boxes next to the pests and hit fix. Opened hostexpert and restored hosts file, then when up and locked it (read only). Then restarted just to see if it were locked if it would keep them from coming back. Well, it didnt work and the hosts file was unlocked again once restarted  . So, I went ahead ran hijackthis again and here is the log file. Looks like we will be doing this manually?

Ok let's see the manual way...

Go to Start >Run and type "Notepad" without the quotes
Copy the text from the quotebox to Notepad.

Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a "#" symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
#
127.0.0.1 localhost

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad file and Save as: Name the file as hosts Save as Type: All files Select the desktop icon on the left to save it on the desktop.
Rigthclick the new hosts file on your desktop, Choose "Copy"
Go to My Computer and navigate to the following dircetory; C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc
Rigthclick the empty folder background and choose "Paste"
Answer "Yes" when it asks whether you want to overwrite the current hosts file.
Restart the computer and run HijackThis again and post the log to here.

MR_JAK3, its not offering to overwrite the current hosts file. I believe its because the current one has the windows symbol on it and asks what I want to open it with, and the hosts file im pasting in there looks like a notepad. I did save it as all files and not a txt file. Another thing I noticed is there are 10 back up hosts files all the same size. The imhosts, networks, protocol, and services files are inside this etc folder as well. I opened the current hosts file in their with notepad to see what it says. Here is the contents of that file.

There is nothing else in it. I was tempted to delete all this and paste the contents of the new hosts into it, but its gonna save it appearing to look like the notepad. Its too far over my head so I will wait to see what you say to do. Thanks,

Terry

Hi :)

Ok interesting...the files shows as notepad document as you opened it with notepad. But that doesn't matter.

Ok let's try this:

Download the following file to the root of you C-drive:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/jpk88/hosts

Then go to My Computer and Copy the "hosts" file from C-drive to C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc

Allow to replace if it asks. Then restart the computer and post a fresh HjT log :bigthumb:

I gotta be able to save this file so that it looks like a windows file like the current host file does. At that point I believe it will prompt me to overwrite the existing file. Cant find any extension on the hosts file in properties. sigghhhh, right about now im wishing I could have 5 minutes alone with the person responsible for making this problem were trying to get rid of! Let me know what im doing wrong here or whatever is next. Thanks,

Terry

Ok the next thing to try.

Rename the current hosts file to hostsbackup

Then try to copy the hosts file to the C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc directory.

Let me know how it works. Also post the new HjT log.

Also if you loose connection, just rename hostsbackup back to hosts.

MR_JAK3,

I just wanted to thank you for your time helping me. It is a little unsatisfying that we never got it figured out but it's the time you spent, research and all that you did trying to help. I just want to let you know I appreciate it a lot. The hard drive in that computer we were working on failed last week, just started clicking out of no where. It won't boot anymore and we didn't have a back up drive on that computer so all is lost. Hard lessons learned! Thanks again,

Terry :)

Hello :)

I'm sorry to hear that...Don't worry about me, it happens....

Good luck with the fresh hard drive and remember my "stay clean" instructions :bigthumb:
