View Full Version : Smitefraud-C.Toolbar888 / Vundo

Smitefraud has shown up in the last couple of days. I scanned and removed it with spybot in safe mode, and then again a day later with system restore turned off and in safe mode. It kept coming back up.
I scanned at etrust. though I left for several hours and I think it timed out. But it did find Vundo. I said clean files but I honestly don't know if it tried or not as the pages came back blank (which makes me think I timed out)
I'm posting from the infected machine, should I be borrowing another machine to be using? or is it ok to continue using this one? I have been avoiding typing my passwords just in case.
Here is the highjack this log file

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you reviewed the above information so we will be on the same page. You have a major problem, but first I would like you to use a newer version of HJT. I would also like you to use Normal Startup in the System Configuration Utility IF WE PROCEED so I can see everything installed:
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download
Download it to your Program Files folder.
Doubleclick the HijackThis_V2.exe to start it.
Click "Do a System Scan and save a logfile"
This will create a HijackThislog.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply
Here is your problem: C:\WINDOWS\system32\autosys.exe and I am not 100% sure of what we are dealing with, do you know what this is? It is very likely it is this:
http://spywarefiles.prevx.com/RRFFEJ11539381/AUTOSYS.EXE.html
You need to read that information, taking you safe into consideration and not being sure what we are dealing with, I need to give you this information:
You're infected, one or more of the identified infections steal information. If this system is used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately by using a different computer (not the infected one!) to make the changes. Banking and credit card institutions, if any, should be notified of the possible security breech. I suggest that you read this article too.

I rebooted in normal mode. and this is the new hijack log
No, I do not know what the autosys.exe is. I deleted it out of safe mode before you replied and nothing broke. So it isn't useful whatever it is.

I copied and pasted the C:\WINDOWS\system32\autosys.exe into each of the three scanners you posted

Primarily this is used for games and work. I do occasionally use it for banking purposes. In fact I hadn't been anywhere banking related all month until today when I absolutely had to. Should I just changes those sites passwords or every site (including the ones I have not been to this month?)

I'd rather not have to reinstall if I don't have to - It has not even been six months since my last reinstall session. I'm not looking forward to doing it again so soon.

Thanks for returning this log and for the feedback. If you read the description of this worm, there is probably nothing on the computer it does not know. If you can, change the passwords once it is gone from your computer and keep a eye on all security accounts all of the time. Take the time you need to safely read and follow the instructions.
1) For your information:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
2) Read this please: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\ <<< out of date, download the newest version and uninstall ALL old version in Add Remove programs.
Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.
3) Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
(wait until we finish to post those reports)
4) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
5) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Neither of the files you said to manually delete could be seen. So I guess they got removed.
I didn't get any errors on bootup and everything appears to be running normal. Though I usually don't boot to normal mode, I stay in selected mode. to boot.

Look under Format at the top of Notepad and uncheck "Word Wrap". It is very difficult for me to work with formatted HJT logs.
This is the scheduler for Java that is supposed to update for you, as you can see it is not working:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\jusched.exe"
You can check it to see if it is not set properly if you wish, but we have found it to be buggy and I personally turn it off to save resources and update manually.
This HJT log appears to be clean of malware, how's the computer running? We need to clean the System Restore files like this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam
If you want to run a good free trial to check for hidden junk, use this one with these instruction, delete or quarantine anything it finds and post the scan results if you have questions.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Hi, sorry for the delay -
I removed all system restore points and the computer is running fine.
I'm kinda confused by this one
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\jusched.exe"
I checked the folder and that jre1.5.0_09 doesn't even exist anymore after I uninstalled it and reinstalled it with 6.
I also installed that program but it was unable to update. So I didn't run it. The status bar never indicated it was downloading anything or that it received anything.
Do you want me to repost the hijack and SD logs? I opened them up again and word wrap is off.

No...I don't need to see those logs again, especially if you are running well. You should remove SDFix from your computer, it does not update and needs to be downloaded fresh when needed.
That other item is a marker in your HJT log for the Java scheduler. The thing is buggy and most of us turn it off and update manually. It is important that you do check for updates, I check mine about the time Windows Updates come out which has been monthly. Start > Control Panel > Java (little coffee cup) when the console opens you should see where it is checked for autoupdates. IF you have any problems with this, let me know. The updates tab will take you to where you can check for those.
Thanks...Phil
