Dear Mr. Jak3,
My laptop just got hit by the "Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888" after my 12 year old son was just curious to look at different aquarium screen savers on the net! I notice that as long as I'm on line, a continuous stream of pop-ups commercials basically "drive" my screen not to mention that many of them are of XXX nature. I'm also so afraid whether my computer hardware/software might have been "damaged" or perhaps some information might have been stolen from my computer?
I tried scanning my whole system with AVG Anti Virus free edition and it reported that trojan horse downloader was detected. I asked it to kill it and it seemed that it did. It wasn't showing any virus on the 2nd and 3rd scan. However, the "Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888" warning keeps showing up no matter what I did and however many times I scan it with Spybot S&D and attempt to kill it.
Please help me to get rid of that terrible stuffs. I need this computer to make a living and for my kids to do studying since ours is a homeschooling family. I briefly read other posts related on this same problem on this forum and I'm convinced that you are the person I should seek help from. Please help and thanks in advance.

I'm Blade and I am going to try to help you with your problem. Please take a note of five things.
I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Please download
VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4)
to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files,
click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing
Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer,
click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new
HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Thank you so much for your prompt response. I did just what you told me. At this point (while online), my screen still flashes on the background once in awhile. Dear Blade81,
Thank you again for your prompt response. This time I tried to follow your instructions again but I encountered a problem in the very beginning phase of the process. When VundoFix was trying to delete those files that I entered into the list box, it said it could not remove the file c:\windows\system32\rqrqrsq.dll and that it would run on reboot as you had described. I then repeated the process exactly as you instructed and it showed exactly the same message like the first time. I repeated the same process one more time and again there wasn't any difference. The bottom line is that it could not remove that file and I just got into this endless loop getting nowhere! Eventually, I just stopped and did not move on to the second step which is downloading the AVG anti-spyware program. It seems like your instruction does assume that the VundoFix program will be able to remove those files on the second boot (if not the first round). But certainly, this is not the case in my situation. I guess I should stop proceeding and wait for further instructions or clarifications from you first. Please advise and thanks again.
By the way, I did overjoy too soon when I wrote you last time. All those crazy ads start popping up on my browser screen pretty frequently again...

If adding c:\windows\system32\rqrqrsq.dll doesn't remove file then don't add that one and continue forward on instructions. We can remove that file manually afterwards if AVG doesn't find and destroy it.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcive.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\evicfm.*
Click Add Files and Click Close Window
Click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from
Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.
Start hjt, click do a system scan only and check (if found):

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.
THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab.
Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
Under the
Hidden files
folder, select
Show hidden files and folders.
Check
Hide protected operating system files.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Change the allow paste operations via script to Disable
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
Download Adaware

It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the

webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!

If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.

It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

Dear Blade81,
I cannot utter the adequate words in order to say thanks to you (and your team). I think you're right when you suggested that my system is now clean. After I did the very last scan-and-clean operation as instructed, I was using the computer as usual doing various things onlone and offline. For the whole time (about 40 minutes duration), I noticed an extremely comforting calm and silence on my system: absolutely no flickering or flashing on the background; no system slow-down; no unwanted popup screens, etc. I was also visually monitoring the connection status and saw there wasn't even 1 bit of unsolicited data transfer from the network into my computer. Before the fix, all those problems would be taking place constantly as long as my computer was on while I could also see that some kind of data was streaming into my system if it's online! I don't want to be overjoyed too much and too soon at this time although it looks very promising. I'll definitely keep an eye on the system in the days to come to make sure it's not re-occurring. I will post a reply again after a few more days of observation. In the mean time, I will do all the things that you recommend to safeguard the system.
This is the very first time I ever got spyware on my computer and is definitely one time too much! It's such a blessing to have people like yourself (and your team) out there who are so knowledgeable and willing to help victims in eliminating their pain. Keep up the good work and thank you so much for your help. I'll talk with you again in a few days.
Okay, I'll be waiting for your input. :) Meanwhile, get rid of those vundofix backups by deleting Vundofix Backups folder on your c drive.

It's been a few days since I email you last time. At this point, I'm very confident to say that the spyware problem on my laptop is gone! In the past few days, I've been using my computer online/offline as usual and I have noticed absolutely no unwanted activities at all.
