View Full Version : Another Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888
Hi,
Both my son & daughter's computers started popping open new browser windows within the last week. Spybot finds Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 on both of them. I'm working with my daughter's compter first and would appreciate any help you can offer.
I ran the etrust antivirus web scanner but it did not produce a log file. When finished it showed "Scan completed. 55,300 files scanned. No viruses found." I then ran Spybot S & R in safe mode and then used Hyjack to produce the following log file.
I will probably be away until Sunday evening, so if you would post a reply before then, I will not be able to respond. Thanks.

Please download
VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4)
to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files,
click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing
Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer,
click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new
HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes

Click Add Files and Click Close Window
Click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES

I had a problem updating AVG Anti-Spyware after I installed it. I had to download the manual update on another computer and then tried to install it. I don't think it worked right, because I couldn't start AVG Anti-Spyware in safe mode. It gave me an error message stating "Connection to service failed. Please resinstall AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5" After I reinstalled it, I couldn't change state of Resident Shield or Auto Updates because they both showed NA. I tried uninstalling from control panel, then reinstalling but it didn't make a difference. Also, I wasn't able to start AVG Anti-Spyware in safe mode, so after several attempts, I scanned it in normal mode. It found 2 threats,a "Tracking Cookie.Question Market" and and "Adware.BHO". I had set Recommended action to Quarantine, but somehow ended up deleting those two and could get them back nor save a log file. Also, while I was running the AVG Anti-Spyware scan, McAfee Virusscan popped up that it found a PUP (potentially Unwanted Program) named Yazzle1281OinUninstaller.exe. I wasn't sure what do do with it,so I left it alone.
I included the vundofix.txt file, the AVG error file & log file and a fresh HJT log. Hope you can help with this info. Thanks.

I just heard newest AVG Anti-Spyware version has something that prevents running it in safe mode. Hjt log looks good. Let's run Kaspersky WebScanner too.
Please do an online scan with
Kaspersky
WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner) (use Internet Explorer)
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest
definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise
Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been
infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

I'm not having much luck with this step either. I downloaded the Kaspersky virusscanner and ran it. It found 4 infected files. I didn't have a Save as Text option. It said Save Report as.. but when I hit that, it froze after typing in the first letter of the filename. The only thing I could do was use taskmanager to kill the non responding Save As box, which also killed Internet Explorer & the scan results.
I tried again and it got about 3/4 done scanning when Internet Explorer just disappeared. On the 3rd try, it completed and showed 3 infected files. They were in the VundoFix Backup\aqeqwkif.dll.bad, lqxahofe.dll.bad and tohfjskr.dll.bad. Again when I hit Save Report as, it froze after typing the first letter of the filename. I just finished the 4th try, found the same 3 infected files but tried a different first letter for my Save As file name. It froze again. I've tried Save As text as well as Save As HTML with the same results.
The first 3 scans, McAfee protection was enabled and it popped up a PUP alert for Yazzle1281OinAdmin.exe or something similiar. Again, I left it alone. For the 4th scan, I diabled McAfee. I'll try running another scan, but wondered if you had any suggestions on ways to save the report. It wouldn't let me select the text to copy into Notepad. I'm not sure if the speed of the computer has improved since it is my daughter's and I don't use it, but there haven't been any new browser windows popping open with ads since we started this thread. At least that's an improvement. I'll wait to hear from you with any suggestions, but post a log file if the next try is successful.

Thanks for all the help. There haven't been any more popup ads, but there is something wrong with Internet Explorer. It crashes and I get an error message almost every time I use it. THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab.
Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
Under the
Hidden files
folder, select
Show hidden files and folders.
Check
Hide protected operating system files.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
Click the
Download
button to the right.
Check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement.
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Download Adaware

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!

If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Stand up and be Counted.
