Another Pipas.A thread

My first post here on the forum although I've been a lurker for years.

From what I've seen of others' posts, it seems I have the pipas.a trojan. Just when I think I've gotten rid of it, it seems to reappear upon reboot--really annoying. My system also feels slower than usual (esp. the Spybot scan).

My Hijackthis log is below. I've also atttached my Spybot log. Thanks for taking a look, I really appreciate the time you all put in.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take
longer than usual to load; this is normal.
When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan,
and check the following items(if there):
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmjir.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmjir.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{C5A7F9AA-158D-4DB9-9F3C-A0BE13D07231}: NameServer =

If you see an entry as well in your O4 lines in hijackthis, starting with dm... for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dm***.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dm***.exe (the *** stand for random letters)
or starting with hg... for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hg***.exe] C:\Windows\System32\hg***.exe
Check it as well. If not sure, leave it and only check the ones I asked you to check

Click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

Finally, please post the contents of report.txt (it should open), along with a new HijackThis log.

If You have connection problems or that 017 return >
Before doing this write down all the settings, Note that not all system/setups even have these settings, While some connection service's will require them.
(These instruction's are basicly for home users.)
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable one some systems

Okay, fixed the two entries (04 and 017) you mentioned. The report.txt is below, as is the new HijackThis log. It looks as though those entries are gone; however, when I re-booted, I still got re-directed. :confused:

(Warning, Long Post!)

I followed your advice and have posted the Silent Runners output file at the end of this post. Sorry if I seemed a bit obtuse in my previous post, my system was going crazy, I think the virus infected me! Let's see if I can provide a clearer explanation of what I was experiencing (notice I say "was" as things seem to be going much better).

After downloading what I now know were some suspect mpeg files onto WMP, I noticed my system had a bug. The bug had some interesting characteristics: 1) it changed my homepage from google to msn, 2) downloaded its own toolbar, 3) re-directed my google searches to random sites (nothing malicious just random, different sites each time I searched on google), but interestingly, also sometimes directed me to the google link I clicked on.

I scanned it with Spybot v1.4, AVG, BitDefender, Trend Micro, and I can’t remember what else, REPEATEDLY. I got a wide array of different problems after each scan, including: from BitDefender “0 infected,” from Trend Micro “Troj_SE.70239, from AVG (or SpyBot?) Alexia, “Trojan Pakes,” spyware cookie.bfast and findwhat (I can’t remember the exact order they turned up as I stupidly stayed online trying to solve the problem). I tried to clean things with SpyBot, but it reappeared. I thought it was solved with the Trend Micro solution, but reinitialized itself when I re-booted. Perhaps it was something with System Restore or a corrupt host file?

I believe your advice in the previous post (#2) solved the problem:

Wish I could, but in a paranoid panic, I dumped EVERYTHING: files, restore points, etc. (Some of the stuff was, uhhh...unsavory, shall we say.) I haven't had any sort of virus for years...pretty scary what with the new Microsoft image/WMF vulnerability announcements. When I looked on TrendMicro and cleaned the bug, there was no info in the encyclopedia re: it...I wonder if I was one of the Microsoft "system compromised pioneers" for this vulnerability.

I sure wish I could understand those logs and what to do about them as easily as you do. I really do appreciate and have enjoyed your help.

Yes, I do use SpywareBlaster. No, I don't use a hosts file. Yes, I'm an idiot. (Well, maybe just a lazy bum.)

I think I used them when I first got broadband, but had so many connection issues I stopped. I've read I should and have planned to but, like most folks I suppose I didn't learn my lesson until after I'd been violated. (I feel so dirty.) I'd looked at the link you suggested earlier while dealing with my problem (saw it suggested in another thread) and had wondered if I should do it too. Now that I've seen it again, I'm all over it.

So I gather the Host lock functions in Spybot (and/or ZoneAlarm) do not protect one from having to constantly update the Hosts file.

I'd like to get my system all clean and shiny as I'm thinking of finally upgrading to XP SP2.

Thanks again for all your hand-holding. I think soon I'll feel safe enough to surf again all alone. ;)

Hi

Javacool just released a new build of Spywareblaster, be sure to check (3.5.1).

The hosts locks usualy only change the properties to read only, any common nastie can change it and put what they want in it, so its best to replace it plus it is improved frequently.

SP2 upgrade, Good idea.

I do indeed have the 3.5.1 release; thanks for the advice. I also appreciate the SP2 vote of confidence. I upgraded early and re-verted. I just want to make sure everything is ship-shape before I head into uncharted waters.
