Vundo and possible other infections? Pls Help

New to this forum. Have tried to read up on other posts, but still need help please.

Few days ago Norton AV 2006 popped up a warning: Vundo. After running a full scan with Norton nothing was found. Same with Spybot, Adaware and Windows Defender. After some research I downloaded HijackThis. I noticed some BHO's and two corresponding DLL (in the Winlogon field). I then downloaded VundoFix and this seemed to find Vundo and fix the problem. I confirmed that with Hijackthis again, the BHO's were gone as well as the Winlogon entries.

This morning I turned on my machine and noticed that it was downloading _something_ don't know what, about a 100MBs later i killed the network. I ran Hijackthis again and noticed new BHO's (file missing), as well as the two Winlogon entries for the same Vundo dll's (this time in C:Windows (not windows/system32 like before) I seached for the dll's on the machine can't find them. I ran Vundofix, Vundobegone and Symantecs Vundo Removal Tool and nothing was found (in Safe Mode).

Can any help me diagnose what is going on? Is it possible to see what process is utilising the network connection (in case its something innocent)?

OK, after spending 9 hours on this yesterday (what a waste of a Saturday!), I think I have resolved the problem.

I did have a Vundo infection a few days ago and it was cleared by using VundoFix. However, on running Hijackthis again Sat morning, alerted by the network activity, I saw some BHO's (no file) and the two DLL entries [recognised from the previous Vundo infection] associated with WinLogon. I could not find the physical DLL's (even searching in Safe Mode in hidden folders etc.).

Using Hijackthis I could delete the BHO and two Winlogon entries but on rebooting they would reappear. After many hours, I disabled S&D Tea Timer, and cleared out it's "Snapshots" folder. [Should have read some of the other posts in more detail - since some tell you to do this!]

I then deleted the offending entries, rebooted and hey presto they were gone. [During this time I had System Restore disabled]. I also used ATF-Cleaner in Safe Mode to make sure nothing else lurking around.

I installed a trial of a Network analyser (NetInfo - http://netinfo.tsarfin.com/) and watched for when the computer would start downloading stuff, discovered it was googledesktopcrawl.exe accessing the net. Checked it's file size and it seemed original. Maybe the extra downloading was because of some very large mails I had received in my GMail in box? [Deleted them, and now only short sporadic connections to net from this .exe).

SO, after running scans, lots or rebooting tests, hijackthis logs etc I think I am free of Vundo once and for all (fingers crossed).


My experience does raise an interesting point, that even when I had the infection the first time, nothing would pick it up (Norton did first time, as a warning, subsequent scans with NAV 2006, and their Vundo removal tool yielded nothing). I tried Spybot, Adaware and Win Defender, no joy. It was only VundoFix that fixed the problem.

I guess this thread needs to be closed (hopefully!).
