Well this is a stubborn one isn't it!? I've been trying to get rid of this with no luck, and having read posts on the subject from previous people with the same problem, you games seem to have the know-how!

I'm running AVG and have Ad-Aware/Security Task Manager. This thing just keeps re-appearing, no matter how many times I (try to) delete it. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

I'm guessing you'll need this stuff (I got some info from the other posts). Here's my Hijackthis results:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Smitfraud is clean, if your version is Spybot is totally up to date and fully immunized, and you find stuff you can not remove, post that information in the spybot forum: http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4

This is a Vundo infection, here is some information for you:
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0\ <<< out of date, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

The computer seems to have been running great since I ran Vundofix (In my second post), however the Smitfraud toolbar + a variety of other nasty things keep cropping up in SpyBot S&D.
The only thing I couldn't do out of your instructions was remove the Gebcc.dll as it didn't appear. This used to load up every time I started Windows, but I believe I got rid of it using a combination of Vundofix and Security Task Manager.

How are things looking then? I'm so glad that the pop-ups have stopped! Vundofix is a fantastic tool.

Thanks for returning you information and the feedback, your HJT log looks good:bigthumb: I am going to post some links from experts you need to read, you have no realtime anti-spyware program running. You need one anti-virus, one firewall and at least one spyware program running anymore to have a chance of surviving. Once you read that information, if you still need help deciding, here is a free one you can consider:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Read the information I posted about Spybot, and post questions about it for those experts.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

If you want to run a good free trial to check for hidden junk, use this one with these instruction, delete or quarantine anything it finds and post the scan results if you have questions.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:

Hmm, here's something I've noticed over the past couple of days (After running Vundofix I think). When I start up the computer, it stutters for about half an hour, where everything will freeze for about 0.2 seconds every 5 or so seconds, and then eventually it stops altogether. Not sure if this is a hardware or spyware problem to be honest as I've not had this PC too long (Got it off a friend who upgraded). Any ideas?

A couple of things to try:

1) System File Checker:
OK... try this. Click Start > Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html <<< same information

2) Run a Diagnostic: http://www.pcpitstop.com/
Help with results: http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com/index.php?showforum=6
Tutorial: http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress/howto1.asp

Post a link to the test results, I may spot something.

3) and you should have applied this information by now, it not only for slow computers:

Thanks

Hi again, thanks for the suggestions PCPitstop worked a treat.

I'm a little worried though, everytime I run Spybot S&D, the same list of nasties appear, including Smitfraud. I delete it each time, and then next time I scan it simply re-appears. There are about 10 different ones knocking about in the results list.

There are a few False positives Spybot has been showing, that toolbar is one:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668
Before I send you to the Spybot forum with those questions, please follow the instructions I posted to run AVG Anti-Spyware.

If you want to run a good free trial to check for hidden junk

Thanks
