This is a Vundo infection, here is some information for you:

I can tell you that folks who read and follow the directions have few problems removing this junk. Most of the infection will be hidden, one file showing is this one: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\escrxy.dll

I will post a lot of directions at once. I am in no way suggesting you hurry, take the time you need to do this carefully.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

3) Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com


4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\hggfec.dll <<< delete that file

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the Vundofix report and a new HJT log.

Vundo found no viruses.
I did notice that a couple of the files you had me remove via HJT are showing back up after reboot.
Also, although my computer seems to recognize my DVD-rom Drive, the properties in System reports that the driver loads fine, but that it can't detect the hardware (DVD drive). Is this part of the same virus problem

Most systems seem to be working without the pop up adds and other weirdness. I've noticed two issues, however. 1) Still can not access DVD Rom Drive. I've uninstalled the driver and forced Windows to search for new hardware. On reboot, Windows finds hardware, installs the correct driver, but the Drive does not appear in "My Computer" or anywhere else using Explorer. Looking in System, DVD-Rom Drive has yellow exclamation point and reports that "Driver has been installed, but Windows can not detect drive"
2) When using msconfig, even when browing without changes, whenever I elect any different startup option I get the message "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes." My account is the only account on the computer and it has administrator status.
Are these part of the same malware problem we are trying to eliminate?

You HJT log appears to be clean of malware:bigthumb: Now to these other issues, I had already typed to suggest you uninstall the driver and let windows find the new hardware and found that the information at the end. That is what I do with a similiar problem. I can also say the malware we dealt with does not cause that issue as far as I have ever experienced.

The msconfig issue could be something the malware changed, but I have not run into that before either.

to continue on with our malware removal, we need to clean the System Restore files:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

If you want to run a good free trial to check for hidden junk, use this one with these instruction, delete or quarantine anything it finds and post the scan results if you have questions.

Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

I believe that the last two issues were either present and unnoticed due to the overriding malware issue, or more likely caused my me as I tried to solve my malware issues before finding your indespensable site.
