A friend of mine unfortunately tried installing a cracked starcraft file on my computer last night and got the whole thing infected.
I've loaded up Spybot in safe mode and done cursory attempts with Vundofix, Ad-Aware, AVG, ATF-Cleaner, and Spyware Blaster, although I am not too familiar with their usage. Although the initial severity of pop-up adds, website redirection, and automatic cancelling of anti-virus software installation has decreased, there are still persisting problems.
Here is the HJT Log, I would really appreciate any help you fine folks have to offer. Thank you very much.

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
1. Download combofix from one of these links:
Link1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link2 (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Thank you so much again for your help.
Hi
Uninstall via add/remove programs if present:
SpywareBot
Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {08C134D3-087C-4139-A98C-3A078358DFDE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hggghec.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sgrzd] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\W?nSxS\?canregw.exe"
Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.
Reboot.
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kfwtlrlr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\smgr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\b122.exe.bin
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvnak.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pdsdrhgi.dll
C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\APPLIC~1\claruxeb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsys64.exe
Save this as ComboFix-Do.txt
Then drag the ComboFix-Do.txt into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/Combo-Do.gif
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Thanks for the quick response.
I tried Add/Remove Programs for SpywareBot yesterday, and it said that it uninstalled it, but then you mentioned it again in the post. I checked Add/Remove Programs again and did not find it there.
After dragging combofix, it didn't ask for a reboot, so here is the report:

Hi
Well that doesn't seem to work at all.
Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark this:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C68AE9C0-0909-4DDC-B661-C1AFB9F5AE53} - (no file)

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.
Delete this folder:
C:\DOCUME~1\CHRIST~1\APPLIC~1\SpywareBot
Empty Recycle Bin.
Please download the Killbox (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/spyware/KillBox.exe).
Save it to the desktop.
Please run Killbox.
Select "Delete on Reboot" and "All files"

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsys64.exe
Go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here (http://www.eudaemonia.me.uk/downloads/Files/missingfilesetup.exe) to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

I followed the instructions with copying and pasting the clipboard to killbox, but when I clicked on the down arrow to show a list of all the copied directories, the C:\WINDOWS\smgr.exe and C:\WINDOWS\system32\pdsdrhgi.dll were not shown on there. I tried doing the copy clipboard option several times but it still showed the same thing, so I'm not sure if those were killed.
After clicking to delete the files, I did not receive a prompt about "Pending Operations," so the computer just restarted after hitting Yes to the Delete on Reboot prompt.
Here's the new HJT Log:

Oh, I'm sorry, I realized that I should have also noted that I am at work, so my infected laptop is not connected to the internet. I'm using a work computer and a portable USB to transfer the notepads so I can paste them in the replies, if that helps you any.
Hi
Looking better :)
Next step is to install antivirus and firewall.
Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.
Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:
1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.
Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:
1) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za)
2) Agnitum (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
3) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
4) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)
If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.
After those steps, please post a fresh HijackThis log :)

Installed AVG Anti-Virus and ZoneAlarm. Like I said before, the infected laptop does not have internet access, so I can't update them yet. I ran a scan with AVG which found a buncha trojans, although most of them were found within Killbox or the VundoFix backup-restore files.

Hi
Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix.
Please download MWav (http://www.spywareinfo.dk/download/mwav.exe):
Unzip it to its predetermined directory (C:\Kaspersky)
Locate kavupd.exe in the new folder and double-click to Update.
If your firewall gives any messages about this program accessing to internet, allow it.
If it says the signatures are more than 30 days old, keep trying, until you get the actual definition updates.
When you see Updates Downloaded Successfully, hit Enter to continue.
Restart onto Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and locate the Kaspersky folder.
Locate mwavscan.com and double-click on it to launch the MWAV Scanner. Now lets do the settings:
Leave the Default Settings checked.
Add a check to Drives
This will light up All Drives
Add a check to Scan all Files
Click Scan Clean to begin.
This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
Please be sure it has finished before proceeding.
Once the Scan has finished, all entries identified as Infected, will be displayed in the lower panel.
Highlight everything that is inside the lower panel and hit Ctrl+C at the same time to copy.
Open an empty notepad file and paste the results (Ctrl+V) to it. Save the notepad to your desktop, name it as you want (e.g; MWav Results).Reboot into normal Windows and post the results here along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi
Empty this folder:
C:\QooBox\Quarantine
Empty Recycle Bin.
Otherwise looking good :)
Still problems?

So far everything is look much better, thank you so much for the assistance!
I was wondering though, if somewhere down the line if I were to uninstall the programs like Killbox, Vundo, ComboFix, etc...if my computer would get contaminated again. It just seemed to me at a glance that Killbox prevents those viral programs from starting on loadup, since they still come up under Killbox's quarantine in the spyware/anti-virus scans.
So if I removed those programs, will the viruses be "set free" again, so to speak?
Hi
You can empty this folder, too:
C:\!KillBox
Feel free to delete those programs.
No, they won't come back.
Any other concerns?

No, I think that's it for now. Thank you again for all the help, and my computer thanks you too :)
Hi
Then you're clean!
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Update Acrobat Reader to version 8.0.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 1 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and save it to your desktop.
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1...allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)
Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic405.html)
Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial60.html)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)
Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place (http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html)
