hi all
Im new to this fourm and to spyware removal so if ive done any thing wrong please let me know. I used s&s which has detected the smitfraud toolbar. Ive run smitRem, AVG spyware, and have mcafee AV. I followed some instructions at geekstogo fourm. Anyways its still being detected by S&S. Other online scanners such as panda are also detecting this one amongst others. Any help would be much apprciated. Thanks in advanced.
Stuart

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Let's start with this informtion: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\ <<< out of date and likely the reason you are infected. Download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs. Check out the Java scheduler, it can't be working. I know it's buggy and I turn mine off and download manually.

There are class active suits involving this infection, let me know if you want more information. It looks like you killed a lot of it but unless you get it all it morphs and comes back, please follow the directions.

I am getting mixed information of this one: C:\WINDOWS\System32\MPB.exe
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=MPB.exe&btnG=Google+Search
If you know what it is fine, if not use one or more of these free online scanners to find out and post the information for me.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) SpywareGuard will block changes we must make. Right click SG in the system tray and click file/exit. It will be put back on reboot.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Hi.

Thanks for the info. I followed the steps and i think they have worked. The MPB.exe file is clean and is related to the use of the power button on my lapton. (media power button). I removed the lijjfee.dll, tuvuv.dll, wineil32.dll from hijack this. The others wherre not listed, but could have been removed from other scans i tried before your post. ( S+S in safemode seemed to have more impact). I think ( well guess really) that i am clean now as nothing was reported by AVG. Also is there need to be conserned about the missing files reported in the hijack log?

Thanks again

Thanks for returning your information, header is cut off the HJT log so I can not show the time of the scan, but the HJT log appears clean of malware and does the AVG scan, great job with the complex instructions:bigthumb: Let's finish up like this:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:

http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

Sorry, missed your question about missing files. Do not be concerned about them, it is a glitz in HJT which should be corrected in the new beta soon which is being used and soon to be in general release.

Hi thanks again for all the info. One quick further question relates to the All in one telecom dialer. Spybot S+S is comming up with the mentioned spyware however there is no win32us.exe in c:\windows\system32 and nothing shown in the HJ Log. Can you give me any info one this.
Thanks

Thanks for posting this information, let me say that HJT can not show everything and as you saw AVG was also clean. No malware program will find everything. Since Spybot is picking this up, first be sure it is not a false positive.

Open the c:\windows\system32\ folder and if that file: win32us.exe is there, then use one or more of these free online scanners to make sure it is malware.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
if it is, delete it. OR you can simple right click it and click delete. That will move it to your Recycle bin. Let it sit in the bin for a few days to make sure nothing negative happens and then empty the bin.

I should have mentioned the item may be hidden, use these instructions:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Thanks
