Super thanks to Tashi for helping me through a registration issue!!

I am having a problem with SmitFraud/Vundu. I have read the instructions before you post and here is what I have done thus far:

1. Ran Spybot SD. Finds and cleans everything but Smitfraud Toolbar 888. I have only used IE to solve this problem but everytime I run Spybot SD it tends to keep finding some of the same items over and over again even after it cleans them. I also ran Spybot under safe mode.

2. CA Online Scan

Scan Results: 55841 files scanned. 2 viruses were detected.

File Infection Status Path

fphfhuii.dll Win32/Vundo.CR

Some final comments:

I ran Spybot under normal and safe modes but ran all the other steps under normal mode. I also did NOT show hidden files or folders for any of the operatons above.

I have also downloaded ATF Cleaner but have not run it yet. I also downloaded AVG AntiSpyware and set it up but also have not run this yet.

I noticed from previous posts that my Java may need to be updated but have not yet done so. Seems I should wait until my pc is clean first?

Finally, I realize my laptop is not optimally protected and would appreciate advice on how to optimize my security against these threats. I have not renewed my Norton Antivirus subscriptions because Norton only seems to slow down performance and not provide adequate protection against emerging threats.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Some information about that junk for you.
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:

Vundo is not your only problem, you have a nasty adware infection call PurityScan/OIN. I would like to do this first:

1) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

2) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Post the combofix log and the uninstall list.

Thanks

Ran combofix, HJT Log and HJT Uninstall Manager (NOTE: When running combo fix, a Google icon appeared in my tray and gave a warning "Google has blocked an attempt by another program to change default search settings." I have never seen this icon in my tray before. I did not have IE open nor is my pc connected to the Internet).

Here is the combofix log:

Combofix also produced a "Combofix-quarantined-files.txt" file. Do you need this as well?

Thank you.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe is probably what gave you the message. When you run a program like Combofix, and you know you are running it on purpose, always allow it access for the one time.

I see the catchme scan identified a rootkit on your computer. It appears it was removed but we will need to check to make sure.

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly. Uninstall one, update the one you keep and run a complete system scan, post for me any item that can't be removed, the complete name and pathway.

Norton AntiVirus 2006
McAfee VirusScan Enterprise
Troubleshooting is near impossible with two powerful programs running like this. Please remove one of those.

Uninstall list: I am looking for security issues and malware. It is a goosd chance for you to look for programs you no longer use.

Please see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 << Java is VERY out of date, download the nerwest version and uninstall all old version in Add Remove programs. This is very likely why you are infected!

Logitech Desktop Messenger <<< optional, this is a resource waster and few folks even know it is there. You get it because you install another Logitech program without reading ther eula agreement. I suggest you uninstall it if you don't use it.

Logitech Resource Center <<< I will guess the MouseWare 9.78 is what you wanted, I would take a hard look at this program also to see if it is something you really need. Logitech has a bad habit of dumping junk on us we don't need or use.

Outerinfo <<< part of your problem, this is PurityScan/OIN and you can see the malware junk it installs in combofix > "Purity Folders

Please take are of the above issues if possible before you proceed:

Combofix also produced a "Combofix-quarantined-files.txt" file. Do you need this as well?No...these are files that the creator can ask for access to if there is a problem during the scan. We just need to remember to delete those before we finish.

______________________________________________________

I will give you a lot of instructions at once, I am NOT asking you to rush, in fact I encourage you to proceed slowly and carefully and to read and follow all directions.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\MCROSO~1\ <<< delete that folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Jamie\My Documents\a?sembly\ <<< delete that folder

6) Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the scan results from AVG Anti-Spyware and a new HJT log. How's the computer running?

Thanks

It is unclear from your instruction whether I need to do anything about the Outerinfo PurityScan/OIN you mention in the Purity Folders. Has this already been taken care of or do I need to do anything?

I deleted Norton AV then updated and ran a scan with McAfee AV. It does not appear as though there were any items it could not remove. If you need the scan log or results screen please let me know.

Uninstalled old Java and downloaded recommended version (JRE 6u1). Received a message that the new version was not compatible (do I need SP2?) but I chose to continue installing and it completed successfully.

Now performing other instructions and will post AVG log and new HJT shortly...

I apologize, please uninstall Outerinfo. If you have problems with it, use this uninstaller:
UNINSTALLER
http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe
TUTORIAL
http://www.outerinfo.com/howto.html

It may be SP2 is required for the newest version of Java. You do badly need to update to SP2 but please do not do so until we are sure your computer is clean.

Thanks...Phil

Uninstalled Outerinfo, Logitech Desktop Messenger and Logitech Resource Center.

Oooppss. Forgot to show hidden file instructions before running HJT fix.

In fixing the HJT scan I did not see:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Osus] "C:\WINDOWS\System32\MCROSO~1\spool32.exe" -vt yazb

Selected and fixed all others. Reran HJT scan after "showing hidden file" instructions and still did not see above item (nor the others I fixed in the first scan).

Could not find:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\MCROSO~1\

When I did a search for it, the MCROSO~1\ folder was moved to C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32 (I believe as a result of the McAfee scan?). Should I still delete it?

I also could not find C:\Documents and Settings\Jamie\My Documents\a?sembly\
Any suggestions on how to find it?

Here are the results of the AVG scan. (NOTE: during the scan, McAfee AV window popped up detecting 3 avgas.exe applications as Tojans and deleted them. Should I have disabled McAfee prior to running AVG?:

Also, when I clicked on the Infections button nothing appeared in the window to be quarantined or deleted. Is this because I selected "Apply All Actions" in previous step?

Ran ATF Cleaner.

Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to make sure I'm doing this right!
Thanks!

When I did a search for it, the MCROSO~1\ folder was moved to C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32 (I believe as a result of the McAfee scan?). Should I still delete it?
We will delete the combofix tool and all folders soon.

(NOTE: during the scan, McAfee AV window popped up detecting 3 avgas.exe applications as Tojans and deleted them. Should I have disabled McAfee prior to running AVG?:
Normally I do not and have not been having any problems with McAfee which I run on my computers also. The scan seems to have worked ok.

Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to make sure I'm doing this right!
Thanks! Please ask all of the question you wish, this is how I learn, how about you.

We still have Sysmantec items left in the log that needs to be removed:
C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
O23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE

Have a look for any uninstaller left in Add Remove programs and if none is there, you can try this tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=
WARNING: If you'll use the tool above, you will also lose Norton Ghost.

Besides that the HJT log looks clean of malware.

Let's have a look at a BlackLight scan:
Please download F-Secure BlackLight Beta:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml

Save it to its own folder in the Desktop
Double-click blbeta.exe to run the program
Click : Scan
A list of all items found is created

The list is in the BlackLight folder on the Desktop, and named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx are numbers).

Please provide the log created by BlackLight in your next reply.

(do not delete anything, most if not all files will be valid)

Recap: Clean the rest of Symantec/Norton from your computer and post the results of that Blacklight scan.
Post a new HJT log for me to check. I am watching all questions and they should all be answered before we finish, if not ask me again.

Thanks...Phil

Thanks for that information, the BlackLight scan is clean, but there is a new item in the HJT log this morning:
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\agent.exeUnless you know what that is, please use one or more of these free online scans and post the information:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Did you or someone else install a program on the computer since here: Scan Scan saved at 3:09:19 PM, on 6/7/2007
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=agent.exe&btnG=Google+Search
You can also navigate to the file and right click it then click Properties to see if there is information about what it is.

I was ready to close the topic before seeing this item, how is this computer running.

Thanks

No, I have not used the infected pc at all so do not believe this file was downloaded recently. Has last date modified as 6/16/2004. Can not tell much from the properties. Why would it not show on previous HJTs? Should I be concerned?

Scanned with Kaspersky:

You're clean!
Kaspersky Anti-Virus has not detected any viruses at this time in the file you submitted.
However, only a fully-functional antivirus solution with regularly updated virus definitions can ensure comprehensive protection against malware.

Scanned file: agent.exe
Statistics:Known viruses: 341247 Updated: 08-06-2007
File size (Kb): 460 Virus bodies: 0
Files: 1 Warnings: 0
Archives: 0 Suspicious: 0

It might have something to do with install shield:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/isuspm/

c:\progra~1\common~1\instal~1\update~1\isuspm.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\agent.exe

If that scan says it OK, don't worry about it, let's finish like this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

What about the two files you wanted me to delete:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\MCROSO~1\ <<< delete that folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Jamie\My Documents\a?sembly\ <<< delete that folder

I found the first one but not the second. I believe this is the only remaining question. Thanks

Both of those files are related to PurityScan/OIN which y6ou uninstalled. Make sure you delete anything on the computer from combofix. If you find either file, delete it, they can do no harm now that the program has been removed.
