Hi!

I discovered I was infected with smitfraud, but don´t know how to proceed. I have read a few of the threads here regarding this problem, but since I´m new at this, I find it hard to know how to start fixing the problem. Can someone pease guide me step by step? I understand there is something called Hijack This, should I download that and run it, and then post the logfile in here?

Many thanks in advance!

sorry, did not read through all of the "before you post"... will post again after having followed all the steps.

sorry again!

hi again!

I have done what it says in the post, but did not succeed in getting rid of all the items in red, the smitfraud toolbar888 was left, even though I tried several times.

Here is my hjt-log:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Have you resolved these issues? I see leftovers from a Vundo infection that has nothing to so with this false positive: smitfraud toolbar888 which an updated, fully immunized Spybot will probably fix.

If you have not resolved these issues, tell me what you have done so far, what the symptoms are, post any error messages word for word and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Hi pskelley!

Thank you for your reply! I have read a little, but since I am new to this I can´t figure out what to do. I followed the instructions in before you post, and after that I ran Vundofix as well, but still get the message on Spybot that I have smitfraud toolbar888. I have updated Spybot and followed all the instructions given in "read before posting".The only sypmtoms are the popups I keep getting saying that my computer is not protected, aloing with some popups with different ads. I followed the instructions on one of those HiJackThis-analyzers as well.. When I start he computer I get a message that C:\Windows\system32\qcoxpvka.dll is missing.

Here is my fresh HJT-log:

Here is some information about vundo for you:
since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog

http://www.revenews.com/wayneporter/archives/adware-spyware-greynets/getting_the_fix_on_winfixer_aol_network_now/

If you have questions about Spybot S&D, post them here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668 <<< see this

I can not comment on what you did with Vundofix since I have not seen the Vundofix results.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjat32.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [claruxeb.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\claruxeb.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ApachInc] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\qcoxpvka.dll",realset
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winjat32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjat32.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\claruxeb.exe <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qcoxpvka.dll <<< delete that file

(if either file gives you trouble, use this tool again)
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running now.

Thanks

Hi again!

Thank you for your help so far. I´m at step 5, and have deleted the .exe-file. The second one does not exist though. Should I proceed with the rest of your instructions?

Kind regards,

Yes Sofia, sometimes stuff gets removed by tools but I still check it to be sure. Finish all instructions and post a new HJT log and I will have a look.

Thanks...Phil

Great job:bigthumb: your HJT log looks clean of malware, how is the computer running? You may remove any tools you downloaded for the fix, the exception is ATF-Cleaner, it is a nice small tool and you may keep it and share it with your friends if you wish.

Let's do this now: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

This is optional: If you want to run a good free trial to check for hidden junk, use this one with these instruction, delete or quarantine anything it finds and post the scan results if you have questions.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Hello again Phil!

Everything seems OK, but Spybot still says I have smitfraud toolbar 888. Should I be worried about that, or can I just ignore it? I haven´t disabled the system resource thingy yet, will try that once I know I can disregard from Spybots info.

thanks again

Most folks report that once they download all current databases and immunize, they no longer see the item. If you continue to see it, ignore it or tell Spybot not to show it to you, there is an option to do that at that point in the scan. My Spybot keeps reporting an issue with the Window Firewall because I don't use it.

Safe surfing...Phil

Hi again Phil!

Just wanted to say that I followed the last step, and everything seems fine now. Haven´t had anymore annoying popups the last couple of days.

Thank you ever so much for all your assistance!

Sofia
