View Full Version : Help with removing win32/darksma.x
Hey,
Lately my VET anti virus software has been giving me a message on startup that my computer is infected with win32/darksma.x. Internet explorer (i use Mozilla) also keeps creating pop ups from mobile phone sites. I've looked at other threads in this site but they have been archived. I have no idea how to get rid of this and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Kyle

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
You have some bad infections, this one worries me most, so let's discuss it first.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\soundvol32.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/soundvol32.exe-18219.html
http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/w32spybotgen.html
There is not a lot of information, but it is a back door trojan and you really should consider this information. I admit I know little about it other than what I have posted, but I would prefer to err on the side of caution where your security is concerned.

In all probability you also have a Vundo trojan, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03 <<< very out of date. I suggest you download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.
Here is some information about this infection:
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:

Hey,
I have read and understand the "Before you post" section.
Are you saying that I either have the option to reformat and reinstall or do nothing? Or is there any methods for me to fix this wothout doing that? I'm not really sure i undertand how to re-format/reinstall. I do use this computer for personal online banking so i am pretty nervous.
If it makes any difference i have been getting a message for a while now (before win32 became apparant) on startup informing that a problem as caused windows defender to stop. "Application failed to initialise: 0x800106ba". I'm not sure if this would help you or not.
I'm going away for a few days tomorow so if i don't reply that is why.
Appreciate the help, Kyle

Are you saying that I either have the option to reformat and reinstall or do nothing?I would say "do nothing" would not be a good option, since this must be a fairly new trojan or more information would be available under the tabs in the Sophos link I provided, it is still a backdoor trojan. With those I usually post this:
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS.
Even with the lack of information I still consider the computer compromised and my best advice would be to pull the plug until you decide what to do. The infections can be cleaned, it discuss this with local technical support. I remove malware and know some about security issues, but I am not an expert in that area.
Or is there any methods for me to fix this wothout doing that?To my knowledge there is no other way, here are a couple of links to information:
http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/how-tos/reinstall-faq.html
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat/
A Google of that error message returns this:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Application+failed+to+initialise%3A+0x800106ba&btnG=Google+Search
The error may or may not be caused by the malware.
Thanks
Ok, cheers for the advice.
I think reformating seems the only way to go.
I just have a couple more queries if you've got the time:
I have another computer networked through a D-Link router (internet hooked up and distributed through the router too), is there any chance that this computer can be infected or compromised aswell?
I am fairly computer literate but reformatting seems like it will take a long time (which i don't really have), is this a job reccommended for a computer technician or will that just end up costing a fortune?!
And (last one i promise), will reformatting mean that the comuter can be trusted for banking and stuff again or is there still no guarantee?
Thanks alot for your help

I would be concerned about any other computers on the same network and will check them for infections.
Nope, folks reformat their computer just to make them run a little better. I have formatted an old Compag and it runs like new now. Consult the links I provided or google for more information. This is not to say a technical expert would not be able to do it.
Yes, your computer would be clean after it is reformatted. I would not plug it back into a Network I was unsure was clean though.
Thanks
hey,
Just thought I would follow up this thread.
I ended up calling a technician to come out and fix my computer. He succesfully got rid of all infections and didn't need to reformat.
Thanks alot for all your help, it was much appreciated.

Thanks Kyle for letting us know, I wish to make sure you asked this "technician" if they quarantee all of the infection has been removed without doing the reformat. If they tell you yes...you should research that.
