View Full Version : Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 and others

Hi there,

I've run the on-line virus scan. It came up with nothing. I restarted in safe mode (eventually figured out I had to change a setting in BIOS to get that option available  ). Ran SpyBot there and it didn't come up with anything.

Earlier I had a SpyBot scan which picked up the following:

Avenue A, Inc.
Bluestreak
DoubleCLick
MediaPlex
Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888
WebTrends live

I've also done scans with Spyware Doctor, Ad-AwareSE & Prevx2.0. In the last few days I've also tried AVG anti-spyware and Stinger. It's the Smitfraud-C one which seems to be the most consistent at coming back.

Any and all help will be gratefully appreciated.

Anyway, without further ado, here's the result of my HijackThis scan:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Can you assure me both of these Proxys are valid?
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 192.1.1.254:8080
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = http://whsntserver; http://whsntserver02

Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 >>> http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668 See that information, probably a false positive.

I see an effort has been made to remove Vundo recently, I can not tell if it was removed without seeing the Vundofix report. If you have Vundofix on the computer, delete it, we would download it fresh if we need it.

Let's do a little cleaning and see what happens.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

You have Prevx2 onboard, do you own this program?
2) Right click on the Prevx icon in your system tray at the bottom-right corner of your screen and choose Show Management Console..
On the Management Console click the Protection Level drop-down menu. You will see three levels:
Maximum
Off
User Defined
To disable all protection set the level to Off. You will receive a prompt asking "You are about to change your security settings. Do you wish to continue?" Click Yes.
Click the X on the upper right hand corner to exit the Management console.

3) Spyware Doctor
From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {54CBB12C-3481-4C5D-942D-4976C0F0A406} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\yayaaxw.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CD3447D4-CA39-4377-8084-30E86331D74C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvwltegu.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddaba - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaba.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: yayaaxw - yayaaxw.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer, post any information I requested, the scan results from AVG Anti-Spyware, and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Right, I'll do my best to follow all that when I get home tonight or sometime over the weekend at least (my wife's getting a bit annoyed at the amount of time I've spent trying to clean up the PC this week  )

For now, the 192.1.1.254:8080, that may be my wireless router? The whsntserver one is no longer valid (we used to live in a school and that was the proxy we used there), but it certainly isn't malicious. I thought I'd changed all that info when I set up my wireless gear.

In terms of Smitfraud-C being a false positive, it's not a tablet PC it's a desktop. It didn't show up when I did a scan this morning. My wife hasn't logged onto the PC though, so I was wondering if it was something in her profile. I'll let you know if it comes back.

As for Vundofix, I don't think I've done that. I ran SmitfraudFix (just did the scan, I didn't know what to fix so didn't do anything). I'll do a search to see if I have downloaded it.

Finally Prevx2, it was just one of the many programs I downloaded while I was trying to remove all the spyware. It found some stuff which others hadn't so I left it on for now. It's just on a 30 day trial period. Is it worth keeping or should I deep-six it? Same for Spyware Doctor.... should I switch back to AVG anti-spyware instead?

I'll run the other things and post as soon as I can.

Many thanks for your help.

No problem, let's make sure you are clean, then I have information from experts in the malware field. Once you review it, if you still have questions, I will do my best to answer them.

Thanks...Phil

Hello again.

Right, the proxys are definitely valid (but not in use)

Smitfraus-C went away for a little bit but then came back again.

I couldn't seem to find he disable option you described in Prevx2 so I just closed it entirely.

I fixed the four entries you specified.

I installed and ran AVG anti-spyware. The log is as follows:

I've also now got a new problem. When starting up the computer comes up with an error

"Invalid ini file
Booting from C:\Windows"

Or something like that (it comes and goes pretty quickly).

Any ideas? Has that been casued by something I've done while trying to remove the spyware?

I look forward to hearing from you again.

Many thanks,

Rob

Forgot to mention, I did run ATF between AVG and restarting and running HJT.

Rob

Rob T

And the actual error on start-up is:

"Invalid boot.ini file
Booting from C:\Windows"

I've also had an error when shutting windows down. It comes up with a warning box with something about svchost. Again, it goes too quickly for me to get all the details.

Cheers,

Rob

It appears that error message is not uncommon:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Invalid+ini+file+Booting+from+C%3A%5CWindows&btnG=Google+Search

I really need to know exactly what they say. If you have no intentions of paying for Prevx, I would appreciate it if you would uninstall that program. I fear we may be creating conflicts running AVG Anti-Spyware, Spyware Doctor and Prevx at the same time.

Once you get Prevx uninstalled, please post a new HJT log. Include any information about the error messages you can.

Thanks

OK, I've uninstalled Prevx2 and Spyware Doctor. I read that SpywareBlaster was a good utility to have so I installed that (it doesn't show up on the taskbar though, but I presume it's running?).

Here's the new HJT log

Thanks for the feedback, I have run SpywareBlaster on all of my computers for years. To keep it free you need to update it manually, so create a shortcut to the Desktop to remind you to update the databases on a regular basis. Here is a nice tutorial, and I am including information about SpywareGuard, freeware from the same
company that I also run for your consideration.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html

I believe a diagnostic would be a good thing, you can get that free here:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/
Help with results: http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com/index.php?showforum=6
Tutorial: http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress/howto1.asp
Post a link to the test results so I can have a look, I may spot something.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

I suggest you either turn this program completely off if you wish to keep the free scanner or uninstall it if you don't.
AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:
