View Full Version : Smitrfraud and a very nast virus i can't remove. please help me:(:(
i've got this smitfraud-c toolbar888 thingy from somewhere, i don't know where, and i have also got some really evil virus too that i can't get rid of. i think it has corrupted the graphics card for this computer because everything, even the mouse and arrow controls are upside down (i'm typing this upside down) and can't identify the problem. i have spybot running, and there is something that is trying to change the registry every once a second, popping up little "registry change denied" boxes once every second. i am completely stumped, as apart from the upside-down-ness, the PC is functionning fine. i ran the spybot virus scan, and it found smitfraud, vundo and a couple of other bits of adware that i removed, but nothing about the virus. i read in another thread about vundofix, which i ran, and seems to have fixed that one, but smitfraud and the other virus i have no idea how to remove. please help me soon

Download it to your Program Files folder.
Doubleclick the HijackThis_V2.exe to start it.
Click "Do a System Scan and save a logfile"
This will create a HijackThislog.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply

You did not follow my directions?? This Temp directory is unsafe and we will have no backups if needed. please delete it and download it again. This time read and follow the directions.

Make sure your version of Spybot is totaly updated and immunized before you run it.
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) TeaTimer: follow these instructions to turn TT off, it will block changes we must make:

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
4) Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post the scan results from AVG Anti-Spyware and a new HJT log.

hey sorry for sounding really dense, but i did follow your instructions, i saved the program and then ran it, and it created a logfile in "notebook" entitled HijackThis.log, and that's what i copied and pasted, i don't understand what you mean and
why it didn't work ?!?!?!

Nope...now you have HJT running twice, look at the HJT log, you can see that.
C:\DOCUME~1\ave\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 5 for HiJackThis_v2.zip\HiJackThis_v2.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\ave\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 4 for HiJackThis_v2.zip\HiJackThis_v2.exe
Please delete them both and the follow these instructions:
1) Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ Click on this link:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download
2) Choose: Download HijackThis executable
3) Choose: Save this file now
4) Save in: change that box to Program Files
Download it to your Program Files folder.
Navigate to the C:\Program Files\ folder and
Doubleclick the HijackThis_V2.exe to start it.
Click "Do a System Scan and save a logfile"
This will create a HijackThislog.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply

Perfect:bigthumb: let's do a little more cleaning like this:
1) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.
2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
(not malware, just a little clutter)
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Let me know how your computer is running when time permits. You may keep ATF-Cleaner is you wish, but delete any other tools we download for the cleanup.
AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
