View Full Version : Smitfraud, Virtumondo & others
Hi,
This is my son's computer and it is infected with a ton of malware. I wrote in last week with problems with my daughters computer and thanks to Blade, that one is clean. I ran the eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner but it didn't find any viruses. I actually had to run it twice because the first time there were 59 browser windows popped open and it finally crashed. I did not see anyway to save a log on that program. I ran Spybot S&R in safe mode and the first time thru it found 103 problems. It was able to correct 100 but said the other 3 might be corrected on rebooting. I rebooted in safe mode again and it found 3 problems under Virtumonde. It fixed one of them but again said the other 2 might be fixed on reboot. I rebooted again in safemode and it found the same 3 problems(Virtumondo), including the one it said it fixed the last time. Should I keep trying to use Spybot S&R to remove them?
My Hijack log follows. Again, thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi
Looking better :)
Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B00D343D-A5A3-FB7A-D97B-89ADDAE622B3} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmmxyioa.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B35D9603-3F62-4161-BFDB-92D7732B41E6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtstq.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Hmngwnd] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\M?crosoft.NET\w?crtupd.exe"
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lowljgno.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winpfz32.sys
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dmmxyioa.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wtssvit32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\swinqndt.exe
Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\T6
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\T1QaSQ
C:\Temp\x2b
Save this as ComboFix-Do.txt
Then drag the ComboFix-Do.txt into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/Combo-Do.gif
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Hi
Now it's better :)
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
o Scan Options:
+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi
I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware (http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3561546).
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
Do the same for each Viewpoint component.
Empty these folders:
C:\QooBox\Quarantine
C:\VundoFix Backups\
Delete this:
C:\Program Files\HijackThis\backups\backup-20070611-132110-824.dll
Empty Recycle Bin
Re-scan with kaspersky

Hi Shaba,
I removed the Viewpoint software and the other files you indicated. The Kaspersky scan showed a clean computer. The computer seems to be running MUCH faster. The 2 log files follow.

Hi
Logs look good :)
Still problems?
Hi Shaba,
I think everything is pretty good. The computer is running much faster. I defragged the hard drive which seemed to help also. I installed SpywareBlaster and AdAware SE. AdAware found 324 tracking cookies and a registry entry for CometSystems. I didn't delete anything. Should I? Thanks again for all your help.
ldancer
Hi
Yes, I think you should.
However, Spywareblaster should prevent those for coming in the future.
Then you're clean!
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)
Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic405.html)
Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial60.html)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
