View Full Version : Unable to install spybot

I am running XP service pack 2 and I have downloaded the latest version of spybot. When I go to install it, I get the which language screen, I select English and that is as far as it will go. Setup just sits in the taskbar and when I go to Task Manager it shows it is loaded into memory but does not do anything. When I right click the setup from the task bar and click close I get the message Program not responding do you want to end now, I click end now and still nothing happens. Even when I do a shutdown it does nothing. I have to manually power off the computer (hold in the power button) to shut it down.

Any ideas how I can get spybot to install.

BTW: I also have AVG running and when I am in the internet I start getting popups for Adware mainly.

Thanks for your help.

Hello mcguyver21215 and welcome to the Forums :)

YOu're infected, let's get you cleaned. Then we'll get back to the Spybot issue...

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Ok good.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hi again, we'll continue :)

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.
Do NOT run yet.

Make your hidden files visible:
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.

==================

Stop the following processes using Task Manager (press ctrl+alt+del, select the Processes tab, highlight the first process in the list and click End Process). Continue through the list (one at a time) until all processes have been ended. If something isn't found, please continue with the next process in the list.

nqdsregm.exe
lwinrodt.exe

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

I followed your instructions, and you were right it took almost 2.5 hours to run the scan.

I am putting back the view setting to protect systemfiles and hidding contents of system folders.

Out of the files you had me check off only these were on the list (nqdsregm.exe and lwinrodt.exe were not under system processes in task manager)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {977D4637-A4AC-830A-8A06-83ADDDE822B1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ekwd.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: cbxyyww - cbxyyww.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vturo - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vturo.dll (file missing)

And I could only find to delete
C:\windows\system32\nqdsregm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lwinrodt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\orutv.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\orutv.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winpfz32.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wtsiit.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\T1QaSQ

I have attached the Kaspersky log (as a zip file) it was too big to include as straight text.

I am still Unable to install spybot but I don't seem to have any more popups.

When I try to install spybotsd14.exe (4.80 MB (5,037,072 bytes), the setup starts and then hangs I have to power my PC off (power button) in order to get it to shut down.

I am attaching (via a zip file) a picture of the digital signature of the file.

Any suggestions?

Hello :)

I noticed that you have uninstalled Norton and that there are some leftovers running. Run this clean up tool --> Link (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039)

Then try if Spybot is able to be installed in safe mode.

Restart your computer to the safe mode:
Restart your computer
Start tapping the F8 key when the computer restarts.
When the start menu opens, choose Safe mode
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

let me know :bigthumb:

I was unable to install Spybot in Safe Mode due to not having an inrternet connection, but once I unistalled the partial Norton stuff, I was able to successfully install Spybot in regular mode.

I noticed that AVG starts automatically and I see it in the system tray, how do I get spybot to start automatically as well, I see it as an option in tyhe Task Bar but not in the system tray.

Thanks for all the help!

Hello :)

Ok good.

Spybot at startup...If you mean the realtime protection (Teatimer), this is how you can enable it to load with Windows:
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Check "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

You can remove the tools we used.

Now you can make your hidden files hidden again.
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Check "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.
