Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Did your friend mention you should read the directions before you start so you would see information like this:

Note: It may take a few days for the initial response, (especially if you start a topic on the weekend or over holidays) so please take that into consideration before posting.
Bumping one's topic by posting additional comments before a volunteer responds; or asking if anyone is there, will actually push your topic back in line due to the new date of your bump.
and like this:

First put hijackthis into a permanent folder.
Example of the wrong way:
C:\DOCUME~1\Name\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

If you would like help, let's proceed like this:

1) C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\Scheduler.exe <<< I need to know what that is, it may well be valid, but my scanner does not like it and we need to rule it out. If you don't know, right click and look for any information about it, you can also use one or more of these free scanners and post the results for me to view:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

2) Move HJT to a permanent folder:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html

3) Here is the google on this item: Win32.VB-IE
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Win32.VB-IE+&btnG=Google+Search
Nothing is showing in the HJT log, exactly what is Avast telling you, what file has it located and where is this file?

4) Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

Restart the computer once the scan is finished, post a new HJT log with a properly placed HJT.exe, any information I requested and the scan results from AVG Anti-Spyware, and please read all of the directions.

Thanks

1stly, apologies if I seemed rude, I certainly meant no offence and I am extremely grateful for any help you can give me

1. I scanned the file and it appears ok

Scan taken on 13 Jun 2007 21:29:26 (GMT)
A-Squared Found nothing
AntiVir Found nothing
ArcaVir Found nothing
Avast Found nothing
AVG Antivirus Found nothing
BitDefender Found nothing
ClamAV Found nothing
Dr.Web Found nothing
F-Prot Antivirus Found nothing
F-Secure Anti-Virus Found nothing
Fortinet Found nothing
Kaspersky Anti-Virus Found nothing
NOD32 Found nothing
Norman Virus Control Found nothing
Panda Antivirus Found nothing
Rising Antivirus Found nothing
VirusBuster Found nothing
VBA32 Found nothing

2.I have move HJT to a permanent file

3. When I do an avast scan it doesn't actually find anything.
However, when I run ad-aware, an avast scanner appears after scanning around 140,000 files telling me there is a sign of the virus
It appears to have infected thousands of files. I would post them all but as I said there is thousands. Here is a typical example of what it says in the scanner.
C:\DOCUME~1\Howie\LOCALS~1\Temp\AAWTMP\C14779531\3C6F8D\Setup.exe

Normally there are 300,000+ files scanned when I use adaware. Once I got over 140,000, everytime a virus was found, it stopped the scan so the full ad-aware check was not completed

4. The scan is too big to post and too big to attach(5.53mb). Avast calls it Worm.VB.dw. I can e-mail or PM it?

OK Howie, listen up. We are both afer the same thing...a clean computer for you and I never take offence, could'nt do this if I did. Let's first say that this is the Safer Networking/Spybot forum, we do not use Ad-aware here and at no place in any instruction have you been asked to run Ad-aware and/or to post those results.

C:\DOCUME~1\Howie\LOCALS~1\Temp\AAWTMP\C14779531\3C6F8D\Setup.exe <<< this looks like Ad-Aware Temp files.
Look at this tutorial: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial48.html
Clean out the quarantine and any temp stuff you are storing. Do not post any Ad-aware logs.

In number 4 of my instructions I requested a scan by AVG Anti-Spyware, if you have not done that, please wait unless I ask for it again, at this point all I want from you is that you review this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

and post a new HJT log...nothing else at this point please.

Thanks

Thanks for the log, no need to quote me, the information is there and it's a waste of bandwidth.

The only thing I see in this HJT log is a couple of dead lines you can remove with HJT if you wish:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

You can post that AVG Anti-Spyware scan report if you have questions about the results. If not, then do this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I would post the AVG report but it is massive. I selected all and pasted on to a word doc and in arial 8 font and it is 521 pages:sad:

right through it says 'Worm.VB.dw : No action taken.'

pskelley
2007-06-16, 20:54
Well, I would have to guess there is a problem with what you have done, I have never seen a log that big. For starters you said:

right through it says 'Worm.VB.dw : No action taken.'
The instructions said:

4) Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

why would you want to run a scan and if it finds something that needs to be removed, TAKE NO ACTION? I suggest you run the scan and delete everything it finds and then run it again. At that point if it is showing anything, post it.

Thanks

I deleted everything in the scan and also went into quarantine and deleted the infection.

I rebooted scanned again and the worm was still there. I carried out the recommended actions which deleted the spyware and quarantined the worm.

The report is now still as long and mainly says Worm.VB.dw : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).

pskelley

Here is information about this worm:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Worm.VB.dw+&btnG=Google+Search
Where exactly if it located, what is the pathway to the location?

First...if you have the worm quarantined, then delete the contents on the quarantine folder:
Clean the quarantine folder
You can remove the files from the AVG AS Quarantine:
-Launch AVG AS and click the Infections button.
-Click the Quarantine tab
-Choose: Select All
-Click: Remove finally
-A window pops asking "Are you sure you want to remove the selected files...??"
-Select: Yes

Without knowing the name of the trojan I can't check to see if this fix covers it but you can give it a try if you wish.

Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks

Both clean, were you able to clean the quarantine folder in AVG Anti-Spyware?

Let's try this scan:
Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Process.exe;C:\SDFix\SDFix\apps;Tool.Prockill;Incurable.Moved.;
This is not malware, programs see Process.exe as bad but it is not.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You are done with SDFix and can remove it from your computer.

Brandit.exe;C:\SwSetup\BrandIT\Disk1;Probably STPAGE.Trojan;Incurable.Moved.;
Don't know what this is, but delete it. You can search for Brandit.exe and scan it here if you wish:

Posted instructions yesterday for cleaning of System Restore files? That is what this is.

Thanks
