View Full Version : Problem with Certificates and IE 7
I have a problem with opening web pages with my Internet Explorer 7. When I try to open a web page that sends a security certificate to it I am getting the error:
"There is a problem with this website's security certificate"
Then it is giving me opportunity to close the web page or to continue. When I choose to continue I am getting the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page" and for a short time in the address bar of the IE I got address "res://ieframe.dll/" and then it loads a web page with the URL of:
I think that I have a Hijacker malware in my computer. I have Spyboot S&D with the last updates but it does not find anything. I also have Nod32 antivirust software with the last updates, but it also doesn't report for any problem. I am using Windows XP SP2 with all last updates from Microsoft.
It is important to mention that I also have FireFox 2.0.0.4 web browser on my computer and I don't have any problem with it on any web page, even on the web apge with certificates that I have problems with IE 7.0.
I looked for a solution of my problem on Interned, but I couldn't find one. I ran SmitFraudFix and SDFix scripts in Safe Mode on my computer but without any success.
Any ideas what I can do in order to solve this problem? If some log files are needed I am ready to provide them.
Thank you in advance.

Welcome to Safer Networking, if you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, it appears you have missed some important instructions our administrator has posted at the top of the forum, especially this: "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please read and follow all instructions and post all required logs or reports, anything less will slow your process.
Use "Post Reply" to post the information in the instructions and stay in the same topic.
First let me say it is hard to tell if I can help you since you have provided none of the information I need. I will post this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/IEtopten.mspx
and suggest a Google: http://www.google.com/ of the error messages return much information to assist you.
There is a problem with this website's security certificate
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=There+is+a+problem+with+this+website%27s+security+certificate&btnG=Google+Search
Internet Explorer cannot display the web page
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Internet+Explorer+cannot+display+the+web+page&btnG=Search
etc...I can also say that running some of the tools at random, when the infection is not present, can often cause more trouble than good and at times even damage your computer. If the information I provided in the links does not help and you wish to have me look for malware as the source of your problems, then you will need to read and follow the directions I posted.
Read them carefully, you appear to have "word wrap" turned on and it should not be.
Thanks
Thank you pskelley!
I read the instruction in "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) and I did the steps there and here are the results:
1) I couldn't run eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner on my computer. It requires Internet Explorer, and after downloading and installing ActiveX control I can not start scanning. Pressing "Start Scan" button does nothing, and I have to mention that I did it many times without success. I also noticed that in the left window where is the information for loading of some modules and initializations I saw some errors saying something like "error initializing engine". I don't know what is the reason to not able to run this on-line scanner. It might be because of IE problem I have or because of slow Internet connection.
I was able to run Trend Micro Online Scanner trough its Java engine on FireFox browser. But it is still running (still scanning my computer). It warned me some times that my Internet connection is slow.
2) I run my Windows in Safe Mode
3) Spybot-S&D din't find anythn to be fixed
4) I downloaded HiJackThis and here is its log:

I see a couple of things that are trash and could be removed, but nothing that will cause the problem you describe. The fact you ran NOD and Spybot and other programs seems to bear this out. I suggest you look at the information I supplied, I believe there are reasons other that malware for your issues.
If you want to run a good scan to look for spyware that might have been missed.
Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
Since the problem seems to be with Internet Explorer, here is some information:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+reinstall+Internet+Explorer&btnG=Search
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+repair+Internet+Explorer+7&btnG=Search
Thanks
I tryed to follow your advices today and here what happened:
I downloaded and installed AVG Anti-Spyware and ran it on my computer exactly following the instructions from the link you gave, but I couldn't save a report from it. Maybe before clicking on "Apply all actions" I had to click on "Save Report" if there was such button, but in instructions is written that first is "Apply all actions" and then to go on "Reports" button. When I clicked "Reports" button It said there weren't any reports to save.
AVG Anti-Spyware took a lot of time to be run on my computer - about three hours or so. It found some tracing cookies and about 5-6 other malware with high risk. But I couldn't save the log file :( I'll run it again after I finish work today and I go home, because this is my office computer and I have to use it for work.
Then I was thinking you might be right that this problem might not be caused by malware but by broken IE 7 for example and I looked at search links in google as you suggested.
I repaired IE 7 by sfc /scannow command and because this doesn't help by reinstalling IE by right-clicking on ie.inf file in c:\Windows\Inf folder. Here I noticed something very strange. When I followed steps for finding ie.inf file I realized that my Search is not working. When I click on Start->Search I see only a bare windows explorer window with Standard buttons and Address bar, but with nothing else - no info on the title bar, no search companion and the search stripe (band) on the left side of the window is balck and empty. Very Strange!?
Anyway I started Install through ie.inf file - I navigated to Windows\Inf folder through Windows Explorer. It needed Windows XP installation disk (I have one with SP2 integrated). At the end of this installation a small error window popped-up saying: "Error in iesetup.dll. Missing entry: IEAccessSysInt."
After restarting my computer I tried again to open this web site with certificate and another strange thing happened. I opened IE and typed the URL in the address bar and pressed Enter but insted of opening this web site through IE, FireFox started and opened it. I even noticed that IE window contained all tollbars and add-ons of FireFox that I have. So it was something like disguised FireFox?!
Then I decided to uninstall and reinstall IE 7 by following Microsoft's instructions. I couldn't find Internet Explorer entry in Add/Remove Programs, so I entered Windows Restore Console through my Windows XP SP2 CD and ran:
cd ie7\spuninst
batch Spuninst.txt
I downloaded IE7 again from Microsoft's web site and installed again and as a final result I got absolutely the same error I describet in my first post. I am a little bit disappointed because it took me most of my working day and I had to postpone all my office task :(
I don't know what to do? One thing I 'll do for sure. After winish work today I'll run again AVG Anti-Spyware and tomorrow when I came back to my job I'll try to save its log file and post it here.

OK...whatever you say. I use the scan all of the time and those instructions should show how to save the scan results. I would like to see
5-6 other malware with high risk. But I have no desire to view cookies you should not be stoing anyway. A scan with AVG should take about one hour. If it is taking that much longer chances are your computer is badly in need of cleaning and maintenance.
If I have not posted this before, you can get help with Microsoft issues here:

::Report end
Today I run AVG Anti-Spyware again, but before it I cleaned all IE and FireFox cookies, cashes, history and also Temp folder of my Windows and Recycle Bin. Today's scan with AVG Anti-Spyware didn't find anything in my computer. So I am thinking that it is a problem of broken IE 7 and Search feature of my Windows. But why then IE loads first "res://ieframe.dll/" and then:
It seems its default search page was changed. What is your opinion?
Today I was not able to run diagnostic on my computer through http://www.pcpitstop.com, but Monday, when I come back to work I'll do. I also will look at Microsoft Support web site for a solution of my problems.
Once again thank you!

res://ieframe.dll >>> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=res%3A%2F%2Fieframe.dll&btnG=Google+Search
You can try this: Windows XP
go to start > run and type in cmd then hit enter.
at the cmd prompt type: ipconfig /flushdns
That long error message give me nothing, you might ask about that at tech support: http://support.microsoft.com/
That is what we pay them for.
Give this a try also to see if it helps:
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = wmplayer.exe //ICWLaunch
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dll
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Try this: Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Search > Settings > What do you have set as the default?
I apologize, you are asking questions in an area that is not my expertise. This is why I keep directing you to Microsoft who may want the browser installed again and/or the Operating System.
Thanks
Thank you pskelley!
Finally today I was able to solve the problem. I noticed that except the problems with IE Certificates and Search window I also had other problems: User Accounts window didn't appear correctly, Extended tab of Services windows didn't appear correctly, MSDN help was not working properly and some others. So I did searching at http://support.microsoft.com and find the solution in the article 913503 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913503/en-us).
The problem was in some DLLs that work with JScript, VBscript and XML. Somehow they were unregistered and I had to register them again through:
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
Then I restarted the computer and everything was OK now.
Once again thank you for your help! I learned a lot!
