Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
I can say you have this infection: http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-14222.html
and very likely a Vundo infection. Hackers have learned to hide their junk from HJT V1.99.1. We can see it if you:
1) Rename HijackThis.exe <<< call it Life101.exe or whatever you wish OR
2) Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download
Download it to your Program Files folder.
Doubleclick the HijackThis_V2.exe to start it.
Click "Do a System Scan and save a logfile"
This will create a HijackThislog.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply
At that point we will be able to see the infection and proceed with instructions to remove it.
Thanks
That renaming HJT trick should be in the Read before Posting sticky.... oh well, thanks for the help, here is a new scan (while I was at worked someone downloaded AVG and ran it, so that's what accounts for the differences.
I guess hitting Ctrl-V can be sorta important before posting.....

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Here is some for you: Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/search.aspx?q=winfixer+msn
http://www.revenews.com/wayneporter/archives/adware-spyware-greynets/getting_the_fix_on_winfixer_aol_network_now/
I will post a lot of instructions at once, I encourage you to follow the directions carefully, those that do have few problems removing this junk.
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.
Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"
3) Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com
(save the report and HJT log until you finish)
4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
(some items may be gone, removed be Vundofix, do not be concerned)

I have a problem, the Vundo removal looks like it was successful and I was about to give you information to finish up and close, but I ran one last scan and an item showed up in the new HJT log that makes me nervous.
C:\WINDOWS\IEXPLORE.exe <<< I may be wrong, would you please scan that file and assure me it is valid:
Here are free online scanners, use one or more. You can also right click and look at properties to make 100% sure it is a microsoft item. Just something about it makes we want to doublecheck.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
Thanks...Phil
you're right, it's suspicious, the icon is 3 blocks in a pyramid. with the letters FMC on the sides. scan reveals no threat from the file however.

OK and thanks. A search on my computer shows iexplore.exe being in C:\Windows\ie7 This however is a folder for ie7 which is 32.2 MB and I have no file in C:\Windows for that item IEXPLORE.exe
Here is what I find: http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/iexplore.exe?engine=adwords!7175&keyword=%28iexplore.exe%29&match_type=&gclid=CLHKu7G-24wCFQElgAodQzLWZw
IEXPLORE.EXE GENERAL INFOAuthor: Microsoft Corp. Part of: Microsoft Internet Explorer Common Path(s): %programfiles%\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/iexplore/
Note: iexplore.exe is a process which is registered as a trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system.
On my computer I have that file here: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe It is a Microsoft Corporation file 610 KB and the file was created at the time the computer was activated.
Copyright under the version tab is Microsoft Corporation.
You may want to take a hard look, run scans, look at properties, etc. I believe you have a nasty trojan there. It is running from the wrong place.
Let's run this tool and see if it remove it:
Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
If you find out it is a trojan and want to remove it manually instand of running that fix, that is fine by me.
Thanks
