Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Hello Alex, there is no doubt you have a Vundo infection, some information:
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:

This is the one that worries me:

High risks are typically installed without user interaction through security exploits, and can severely compromise system security. Such risks may open illicit network connections, use polymorphic tactics to self-mutate, disable security software, modify system files, and install additional malware. These risks may also collect and transmit personally identifiable information (PII) without your consent and severely degrade the performance and stability of your computer.Because of this backdoor type trojan, I will post these links for your consideration:

I will start the removal proceedfure and have no objections if you should decide to go another way.

Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

1) Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

2) Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

Post the SDFix report, the Vundofix report and a new HJT log. We will have more to do.

Thanks...Phil

Hello Alex, I fear we still have a ways to go with this one, there is still some of the Vundo infection and we have this to deal with:
Rootkit runtime2 Found, Use a Rootkit scanner !

I see no antivirus program running on this computer? To go online anymore without one is cyber-suicide. Please install one now, here is a free one if you need it:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
http://www.free-av.com/

C:\WINDOWS\system32\logon.scr <<< you know what this is? If so, ignore my instructions to remove it.

Let's try this one for the rootkit, follow the directions carefully:

1) Click here to download AVG Anti Rootkit and save it to your desktop.
http://beta.grisoft.cz/beta/betarep.files/antirootkit/AVG_AntiRootkit_1.0.0.13.exe
Double-click on the AVG_AntiRootkit_1.0.0.13.exe file to run it.
Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
By default it will install to "G:\Program Files\GRISOFT\AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta".
Click "Next" to begin the installation then click "Install".
It will then ask you to reboot now to finish the installation.
Click "Finish" and your computer will reboot.
After it reboots, double-click on the AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta shortcut that is now on your desktop.
Click on the "Perform in-depth search" button to begin the scan.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it complete.
When the scan is finished, click the "Save result to file" button.
Save the scan results to your desktop then come back here to copy and paste the results in your next reply to this thread.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [GPLv3] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\witsfiys.dll",realset

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\witsfiys.dll <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\logon.scr <<< delete that file
(unless you know why it is there)

(if those files give you trouble, use this tool and instructions)
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post the scan results from AVG Anti Rootkit, any information I requested and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Alexis

Hi phil
I do have antivirus installed via my broadband supplier (virgin media) it's this line in the hijack log:
O23 - Service: PCguard Firewall (RP_FWS) - Radialpoint Inc. - C:\Program Files\blueyonder\PCguard\fws.exe

it has antivirus, firewall and popupblocker. I think it must have gone down to allow all the nasties through and it didn't seem to recognize much once it was through although it does regularly stop other virus attacks.

here is the AVG antirootkit log
clean
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\runtime2.sys

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [GPLv3] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\witsfiys.dll",realset

i also managed to delete the three files that vundofix could not get rid of by using a command editor. these were
C:\windows\system32\awtrpop.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssstv.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsss.dll

I realize I should have waited for your advice but i came close to extracting the virus's from my harddrive with a hammer. must say your method has more finesse and is preferable.:red:

computer has begun to run a little smoother now!

Hi Alex, looks like you killed that rootkit, I did some research on it last night and thought it might be hard to get rid of. Thanks for that information about your anti-virus, that sure looked like just a firewall to me. You want to be sure you have an antivirus, firewall and a good spyware program running in realtime. I personally don't trust these packaged deals provided free by ISP's so keep an eye on it and be careful.

Looks like you killed most of the infection, let's see if we can clean the rest like this:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Since this was such a nasty infection, I would like to do this.
Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post the AVG Anti-Spyware Scan Report and a new HJT log...let me know how the computer is running now.

Thanks...Phil

Hi Phil thanks for the speedy response,

I updated my antivirus, spyware and firewall package to include privacy manager and anti identity theft. I ran another scan and it found a trojan which I deleted.
it also mentions in a log that it couldn't delete:-

Protector.EXE - a W32/threat-HLLSI-based Maximus
Max1D1641.EXE - a W32-Dialer-Behaviour! Maximus
A0036886.EXE - also a W32-Dialer-Behaviour! Maximus
A0037762.EXE - a W32/threat-HLLSI-based Maximus
A0038824.EXE - W32/Downloader2.DEJ

added AVG and ran a scan it found loads of horrible things. it seems the package deals don't do as well as they should!

Use these free online scanners to scan these items, delete them if bad.
Make sure hidden files and folders are enabled or you may not find them:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
I will guess they will be in the System32 folder. If needed, use the Delete on Reboot tool in HJT:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb

Protector.EXE
Max1D1641.EXE
A0036886.EXE
A0037762.EXE
A0038824.EXE

C:\!KillBox\ <<< delete that folder

C:\VundoFix Backups <<< delete that folder
Delete any tools we download for the fix, you may keep ATF-Cleaner if you wish. It is a nice small tool, share it with your friends.

Read about how to control cookies/tracking cookies

A lot of nasties in your System Retore files, clean those like this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Hi Phil,

Pc is up and running again - so far so good!
I will endeavour to keep antivirus etc updated, on and run scans regularly.
no trace of the aforementioned;
Protector.EXE
Max1D1641.EXE
A0036886.EXE
A0037762.EXE
A0038824.EXE
I think they must have been eliminated at some point during the cleanup!

With your help I was able to avoid resorting to the hammer cure and still have a working pc.

As a mark of gratitude I have made a small donation.:bigthumb:

I am having trouble accessing the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\windows\currentVersion\run
it asks me to verify that I have access, could this be a legacy of the infection?

Thanks for all your help.
Alex

Thanks for a last look, I suggest you NOT have this item running all of time:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares] "C:\Program Files\Ares\ares.exe" -h

Not a big fan of files sharing tools which may be safe but ofter share illegal files, I would turn it off in MSConfig.
