View Full Version : Pop-up Problem

Patrickboe123

I've been battling various malware, including zlob and spylocked...still have full page pop-ups related to search terms, that appear. Computer also hangs for roughly 3 minutes at start-up...

Saved hijack this to folder in c: and renamed to scanner.exe...windows updates should be current, would really appreciate a quick look at the log and any advice available.

Regards,

Patrick

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Hello Patrick, this does not look like Vundo (which is when we rename HJT) but Smitfraud. We need to have a look at the infection first:

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post the C:\rapport.txt

Thanks

Thanks for returning the information, none of this infection shows in the HJT log. This was the only clue to the infection:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8F2183B9-F4DB-4913-8F82-6F9CC42E4CF8} - C:\WINNT\system32\lafD7.dll
http://www.castlecops.com/CLSID.html

(no name) {8F2183B9-F4DB-4913-8F82-6F9CC42E4CF8} X BHO laf**.dll , laf***.dll (* = random char or digit) Trojan dropper, detected by ESET's Nod32 antivirus as Win32/Hoax.Renos.NAV - a member of the SmitFraud malware family
and your mention of zlob and spylocked, let's hope that's all there is.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running now.

Thanks

Sorry for the delay in responding...

I had difficulty accessing safemode, finally was succesful.
I followed the directions with smitfraud.exe but was not prompted regarding wininet.dll.

Unfortunately, I am still experiencing the pop-up adds tailored to specific search terms in google, etc...although the computer boots more quickly now.

Here's the Smitfraud log, with new HJT to follow.

Patrick, we have a problem, first let me say you are only prompted prompted regarding wininet.dll when the file is infected. I appears to me that you did the same function twice. You followed the first instruction to search.

You have not run the clean or optional, but search twice. Look at the items in the log at PCPitStop that I highlite in red.
Read the second instruction >>> Clean: and Optional:

Boot into Safe Mode

and complete them.

Reread the info...made doubly sure that I did not repeat the search function...went straight to clean.

Windows clean function started up between clean and registry clean. Caused the first run to skip registry clean. tried again, and it completed without errors.

Pop-ups are still present after reboot out od safe mode.

here are both new logs...as always, thanks for your assistance..

PS Kelley,

After my last post I updated Spybot and ran it...it identified "abetterinternet" but was unable to fix it.

I researched the symptoms and they seem consistant with the pop-ups i'm receiving.

Is this perhaps the root cause...I've pasted spybot report info below...

Thanks for returning your information, Follow these instructions please.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8F2183B9-F4DB-4913-8F82-6F9CC42E4CF8} - C:\WINNT\system32\lafD7.dll
Win32/Hoax.Renos.NAV

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the AVG Anti-Spyware scan report and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, AVG Anti-Spyware is clean except for cookies and your HJT log is clean of malware, any malware issues now?

Why does Spybot-S&D flag changes in the Windows Security Center?
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/46.html
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=250

If Spybot is totally updated and immunized and you have questions about something it finds and does not remove, have a look here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4 Make sure you review Sub-Forums : Spybot-S&D and the Sticky/Pinned items especially http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=3922
If your questions are still unanswered, post there for help from the Spybot experts.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Thanks for all of your help.

The pop-ups have not returned, which is fantastico!

The only issue left is that Spybot still detects the following...

ABetterInternet: Autorun settings (NvCplDaemon) (Registry value, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\NvCplDaemon

But I saw that the useful info you provided last post had a topic for spybot items finds and does not remove...I can have a look there as I fear that I've already taken up too much of your time.

Regards,

patrick
