Seems there's something of an epidemic going on, is there anyway to immunize against smitfraud and related malware? ZoneAlarm, AVG and Spyware Blaster seem to be ineffective in this matter.

Yesterday I ran Spybot and it picked up smitfraud, virtumonde and asta-killer. After a couple of hours of repeatedly running VundoFix, Smitfraudfix and Spybot I managed to get Spybot and AVG to give me the all clear. However, today smitfraud returned and I suspect the others won't be long in following.

The following versions of Java are showing in Add/Remove Programs:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Are any of these susceptible to exploitation?


Anyway, here is a HiJackThis log. Vundofix isn't picking up anything at the moment. What do I do?

Now delete all Java programs but the newest. No program will stop these exploits. Only takes one bad website to infect you.

Please read and follow the directions carefully.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\irkzazsv.exe <<< delete that file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kibyqsoh.dll <<< delete that file

(if either file gives you trouble, use this tool and instructions)

5) Let's be sure we got all of the junk, do not confuse this program with your antivirus, they are not the same program.
Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post that scan report and a new HJT log.

Thank you very much, I hadn't expected such a speedy response. In the meantime I had located some of the nasties you mentioned (kibyqsoh.dll and irkzazsv.exe), I was able to remove them from the command prompt in safe mode. When I read your instructions I followed them as closely as I could given what I had already done. The AVG A-S log was too long to post, but I checked it thoroughly and it didn't pick up anything but about 290tracking cookies. Here's the hjt log:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
