View Full Version : Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 problem

Hi. Recently my computer suffered an infection by Smitfraud and VirtuMonde, both of which Spybot couldn't remove for good.
Seeing as internet use became impossible and it is rather critical for me, I resorted to some amateur tampering and managed to get rid of VirtuMonde (or at least Spybot doesn't show it anymore) and the machine runs much better now (and I can access the Internet). However Smitfraud is still here and I'm afraid of taking any further uneducated actions.
So I would really appreciate some help.
Due to lack of working IE I couldn't use the eTrust online scanner, thus no log from it, but here are the results of HijackThis run:

I checked all those three entries in HJT, including that IP address, because I couldn't recognise it. HJT showed this error message, but otherwise did all I told it to:
An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\windows\system32\ldcore.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument
Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible
Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2800.1106
HijackThis version: 1.99.1
This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.
ldcore.dll was not present.
In ATF Cleaner I emptied the items under Main tab, but the Firefox and Opera tabs were inactive (greyed out).
I ran the AVG scan (with all the mentioned settings) and it found loads of tracking cookies plus a few adware items but, unfortunately after pressing the Apply all actions button (and all the quarantining (cookies got deleted)) the Save Report button was inactive. I couldn't save the report at all.

I believe those AVG findings were in C:\Vundofix Backups folder. That folder can now be deleted.
Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.
THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab.
Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
Under the
Hidden files
folder, select
Show hidden files and folders.
Check
Hide protected operating system files.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
If the service pack 2 download is too large, you can order a copy on cd from microsoft here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx)
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Change the allow paste operations via script to Disable
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks.
The program is available for download here (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-1)
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)
Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://forums.neoplanet.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=6640)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.
http://images.malwarecomplaints.info/logo/MWC-logoplus4.gif (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info)
Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Vundo please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade

I deleted the Vundofix backup folder.
It appears that the machine runs normally and there are no visible signs of infection, but I ran Spybot again and it still lists the Smitfraud entry:
Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888: Settings (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1844237615-1958367476-682003330-1003\Software\Microsoft\aldd
It's the same one that was there all the time and even when fixed by Spybot, it keeps coming back after system restart.
Should I do something else about it?
Hi
Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on the Desktop.
REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1844237615-1958367476-682003330-1003\Software\Microsoft\aldd]
It should look like this -> http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/reg.gif
Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here (http://www.nellie2.co.uk/file.htm#How_to_Make_a_.Reg_File_) with screenshots.)
That should remove Spybot founding.

I removed that key. All scans look good.
I just wanted to make sure I can proceed with resetting system restore and installing Service Pack 2.
Good, now you can do updating and system restoring. :)

I installed SP2 and all critical updates (as well as a few non-critical ones).
I already use most of the third-party anti-spyware software that you listed, but I added iespyad just in case I want to use IE one day (I'm used to my Firefox).
System clean, updated and protected.
Thank you very much for your help, Blade. It is very heartening to see people like you, using their hard-earned knowledge and expertise to voluntarily help others with their problems.
Good luck in all your endeavours.
