I tried to follow all of the prescribed methods before posting this thread, though there were a few big BUT's invlolved:

1) When I tried the first web-based scan I began to get various files DOWNLOADED to my system instead of removed.
2) When I attempted to boot into safe mode I was unable to move the cursor to select what I needed even after numerous reboots and other simple fixes.

So, I ran Spybot again after running the second listed web-based scan.

Here is the Hijackthis file:

Hello-

So, I have run a few different programs since last time including the combofix, online scanners,AVG Anti-Virus and SpyBot and I have noticed a few things.

1) I rarely have popups any more though I am still getting a few now and again.
2) My browser, no matter which one I am using, is running markedly slower.
3) The icons next to the URL in the navigation window are not the icons associated with the site I am at. E.G.- when at google I do not see the typical "G" logo. I see a blue logo with the letters FSC....

Thanks for the help!

K

Hi again, we'll continue :)

We'll upload one file for firther inspection. Please download the Suspicious file Packer (http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip) from Safer-Networking.Org and unzip it to your desktop.

Run SFP.exe.

Please copy the following lines into the Step 1: Paste Text window:
C:\WINDOWS\rayiou.exe

then click "Continue".

This will create a .cab file on your desktop named requested-files[Date/Time].cab

Please go to this forum (http://www.thespykiller.co.uk0)
There's no need to register. Just start a new topic in the "Uploads" section, titled "File for Mr_JAk3".
Add the link of this topic to the message.

Use the Attachment box to upload the cab file from your desktop.

NOTE: You will not see the files that have been uploaded (including the ones you upload yourself) as they only show to the authorised users who can download them

Thanks!!

You don't seem to have a third-party firewall (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56) installed. You must install one firewall.
It is possible that you're using the Windows XP firewall. That is of course better than nothing but I recommend that you install a more advanced firewall that gives more protection. Windows firewall doesn't eg protect your computer from inbound threats. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time. I'll give you a few alternatives if you want to install a third-party firewall:

These are good (free) firewalls: Sunbelt-Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/)
Sygate (http://http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3356)
Outpost (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1056)
Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com)

You don't have an antivirus (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=53#53) on your computer, you must install one antivirus. Otherwise you'll get infected again.

These are good (free) antiviruses: AVG (http://free.grisoft.com)
Antivir (http://www.free-av.com)
Avast (http://www.avast.com)

Howdy Howdy-

1) When running AVG in SafeMode I was unable to produce a log even though I followed your directions to the letter. I had two downloaders and a trojan that were quarantined, however. So, how do you want me to proceed with getting you a SafeMode log?

2) there are files in C:\Program Files\Common Files\ffuw which are:

(folder) ffuwd
class-barrel (size) 4,818 kb
ffuwa.lck 0kb
ffuwh 2kb
ffuwl.lck 0kb
ffuwm.lck 0kb
ffuwp.lck 0kb

3) The file submgr.bgi is a little thing that displays network and CPU information on the desktop. This computer was once part of a large POS network.

Hello :)

Ok no need for AVG log then.

Ok the folder is bad, delete it:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\ffuw

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Howdy, Sir-

So, I forgot to disconnect the network before running the scan, which may be a good thing, so the log file came out to be 52 MB!!!

To that end, I loaded the file to my server.

www.constantcolumbus.com/kaspersky.txt

Thanks a million, as always,

K

P.S.- I applied to the University to help people as you have helped me, because of your help. Thanks, hope I get in when my system is clean!!!!

Hello, good work :)

It is looking quite good now. How is the computer running? Any issues?

Also nice to hear that you're interested in helping other people :bigthumb:

Well, I am getting some pop ups along the lines of what was going on before, though rather infrequently. The url usually starts with http://url.cpv......... and then opens a window for some product.

Other than that it is running much better. I have been running scans twice a day just to be sure, though.

Thanks again for all of your help! What a monumental task!

Hello and sorry for the delay (Midsummer here) :)

Hmm ok let's do some research about the popups, there might be something hiding...

Please run a GMER Rootkit scan:

Download GMER's application from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Unzip it and start the GMER.exe
Click the Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.

Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to your clipboard.
Paste the results in your next reply.

Warning ! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.

I will be running this tomorrow. I am away from work today (where the comp is) and will be there tomorrow!

Thanks!

Well, out of curiosity I ran a Kaspersky online scan, the summarized results of which are on the bottom of the gmer scan listed here. Looks like some things made it through. I am also going to run a hijackthis log and post that in another message. Thanks again for your help here!

Hi :)

Ok...Still getting those popups?

They appear when you surf on the internet?

Yes, but they are VERY infrequent now. I think they are regular popups that are making it through the blocker. It is about one per every half an hour or something.

I think it is all OK. THANKS!

Hi again, it is looking clean now :)

I think that those are just normal popups...

You don't seem to have a third-party firewall (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56) installed. You must install one firewall.
It is possible that you're using the Windows XP firewall. That is of course better than nothing but I recommend that you install a more advanced firewall that gives more protection. Windows firewall doesn't eg protect your computer from inbound threats. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time. I'll give you a few alternatives if you want to install a third-party firewall:

These are good (free) firewalls: Sunbelt-Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm)
ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/)
Sygate (http://http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3356)
Outpost (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1056)
Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com)

You can remove the tools we used.

Now you can make your hidden files hidden again.
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Check "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.

=============

Now that you seem to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Clear your system restore (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx)
This will clear the system restore folders from possible malware that was left behind during the cleaning process.

Use ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1)
Download and install ATF Cleaner. Clean your temporary files & folders with it regularly.

Use Ad-Aware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use AVG Anti-Spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/)
Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use Spybot S&D (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)
Download and install Spybot S&D. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Install SpywareBlaster (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.

Install MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.

Use Firefox browser (http://www.mozilla.org)
Firefox is faster and more secure browser than Internet Explorer.

Keep your systen up-to-date (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
Visit Windows Update regularly. How to enable Automatic Updates? (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial35.html)

Keep your antivirus (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=53#53) and firewall (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56) up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with you antivirus software.

Read this article by TonyKlein (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Stand Up and Be Counted ! (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php)
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Stay clean and be safe ;)

Hello :)

If you don't use WinTouch (http://www.wintouch.com/) software you may just remove it via Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs

Then you can delete this folder:

C:\Program Files\WinTouch
