====

So I've been working on this, doing what I can to fix it. I tried deleting the wsnpoem directory myself with BartPE. It returned after startup. Spybot said that the Smitfraud, I suppose installed with Win32.Agent installs a .dll in the winlogon, so I tried to find that entry with BartPE, and it wasn't present in my registry, but after reboot into Windows, the scan ran, and behold the value was present and Spybot cleaned it but was, as always, unable to remove Win32.Agent (its directories and .dlls also returned after reboot).

I have been receiving popups (like the description for Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 states). I first got them in Internet Explorer (which I hardly ever use) so I removed all of the Add-ons that I did not identify as Microsoft proprietary, google, or McAffe.

I believe that the infection originated on June 3rd, based on my log from Spybot resident (after this paragraph). Since then McAffe firewall has been blocking several requests to the internet, one specifically (and recurring) is the winxx.tmp.exe. I have blocked it everytime that I have been notified. Also, McAffe Virus protection has been issuing popups about trojans that it has found (not very often, about once every other day, but two or so at once, it has since increased in frequency (past couple of days)). My subscription of McAffe ran out around the end of May (well before this, though) and I therefore do not have the most up to date definitions for it.

from the resident log, repeats several times:
6/3/2007 4:09:31 PM Denied value "efcyxxx" (new data: "") added in Winlogon Notifiers!
6/3/2007 4:09:34 PM Denied value "efcyxxx" (new data: "") added in Winlogon Notifiers!
6/3/2007 4:09:37 PM Denied value "efcyxxx" (new data: "") added in Winlogon Notifiers!
6/3/2007 4:09:38 PM Denied value "efcyxxx" (new data: "") added in Winlogon Notifiers!

Later that day and ever since I have had this:

6/3/2007 4:43:46 PM Denied value "UserInit" (new data: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,") changed in Winlogon!
6/3/2007 4:43:49 PM Denied value "UserInit" (new data: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,") changed in Winlogon!
6/3/2007 4:43:51 PM Denied value "UserInit" (new data: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,") changed in Winlogon!

I eventually got annoyed with the popups from spybot resident, so I killed the rule and have been working on Linux. I'm fed up now, and I want to fix it :D (I should note that those entries in resident.log take up around 75-85% of the file).

So, here's the hijack this log. I have not fixed anything.
I'm on Windows XP Media Center Edition with a laptop a little under six months old. Thanks in advance for any help that you guys can provide. I should note that I am on dial-up and therefore would like to keep the downloading to a minimum.

(I'm a web developer, so that's why you'll see entries like MySQL and Bitkinex and the like)

Is there something else that I need to do to get my problem resolved? There are several posts about this problem, is mine different somehow?

Alright, sorry for that last comment, those people that had replies had been waiting a lot longer than me. (I would have edited and replaced with this post, but the option was not available)

I was able to get rid of the Win32.Agent.x. I created a limited account and then ran spybot as an administrator. The malware apparently wasn't loaded and was deleted by Spybot; I can post the fix log if needed. Subsequent scans showed only the Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 as before. On the limited account, I got an error similar to the image posted in this thread/post. (http://www.forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=93797&postcount=4) My dll file read iqrjydxm.dll instead, however and before I deleted it with the BartPE CD it read access denied and then could not be loaded. I was surprised to see, however, that this dll file was registered with something called GPLv3, which I believe to be the GPL ghostscript converter (for deskPDF PDF conversion), though I could be wrong. Spybot scans following this continued to yield only the Toolbar888.

From the resident log that I previously posted, I believe that you will see a reference to ntos.exe in the userinit change. I saw in BartPE that there was a link named ntos and the .exe file ntos.exe. I don't know if this is related to the Smitfraud.Toolbar888 or not, but I have never seen it before and see it listed as malicious in google searches.

Lastly, I revisited those Add-ons in Internet Explorer today when I removed them from IE on this limited account. There were some associated with some malicious dlls (links after paragraph) called sstqr.dll and efcyxxx.dll. Again, I removed the add-ons. The 'System Startup' tool of Spybot also listed these dlls in startup (as well as the ntos.exe enty and the GPLv3).

sstqr.dll (http://www.help2go.com/postt17027.html)- I believe this is doable for removal (I have downloaded the utility), but I want to know if I should attempt this. I believe that I could just edit the file directly from BartPE and clear out all the data in one fell swoop.

efcyxxx.dll (http://spywaredlls.prevx.com/RRIACC34378174/02443728.DLL.html) - The dll is listed as one of the most common variants of the randomly named dll. This software is ~11MB and it would take quite some time to download and it's a trial. I've never heard of the software and am cautious. I'd prefer if we could do it ourselves.

Thanks again for the help and let me know if you need more information.

hi JonTec,

first look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall anything like:
My Way
My web search.
----------------------
next download these two, these are tools for two very popular malware apps making the rounds. i included the file size, neither are really large files. dont know if you have already used these or not:

download and run vundofix.exe: (not to big a download>105KB)

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Click the Scan for Vundo button.
* Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
-----------------------------
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop: (little bigger file>>780)

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named: c:\rapport.txt

stop at this point and post a HijackThis log along with the contents of the c:\rapport.txt.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
--------------------------------
reboot computer once if vundo dosnt request it. rescan and post a new hjt log, vundo log and smitfraud log please.

Thanks for such a speedy reply.

I was able to remove the MyWebSearch (it was installed with WeatherBug as a requirement) so I went ahead and uninstalled WeatherBug after that. In addition, I also removed AOL, which I never use anyway.

I ran VundoFix, and here is the log for it:

I will now continue with the SmitFraudFix. Also, I will be able to get to broadband tomorrow to upgrade my version of Java (I noticed that warning and have seen it around the forums).

Alright, I ran the SmitFraudFix.cmd with the first option (search). Here is my log for it and the HJT log. However, were any changes exacted? There was a clean option, but I didn't choose it; should I?

I am restarting my computer and will post new logs once I have rebooted.

After restarting, I ran VundoFix again as requested and it found two additional infections (one was a .dll file I had manually removed, iqrjydxm.dll). I removed the infections and restarted my computer; running VundoFix again yielded no errors. Below are the logs in the following order, VundoFix, SmitFraudFix, and HJT.

I am still receiving the winlogon entry from spybot, however, and I don't believe that sstqr.dll or efcyxxx.dll has been killed either.

VundoFix:

hi JonTec,

ok good. thanks for all the info.

There was a clean option, but I didn't choose it; should I?
no need to run the clean option in smitfraud.

start hjt, click on open misc tools section
click delete a file on reboot
copy/paste in the file name window:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winzzc32.dll
click open, at the prompt to reboot select yes.

after the reboot please rename your hjt icon to something else like scan.exe
then rescan and post a new hjt log.

Alright. I followed the directions and restarted my computer.

sstqr.dll appears to be gone (from the log), but efcyxxx.dll still appears to be present along with something rather new: fymigkwp.exe (I believe McAffe had deleted this file days ago as a suspected vundo, I'm not totally sure). I just wanted to call attention to these as they are the only ones I've been able to identify as possibly harmful.

Also, I'm curious about why we renamed the HJT .exe, are infections sensitive to HJT/know to look for it with its original name?

Thanks again for all the help thus far. Here's the HJT log.

hi JonTec,

thanks for the info.

go to start>run and type in--> services.msc,<--in the list of services that comes up look for>>DomainService

right click on it and select properties. under the general tab:
make sure that the service status is: Stopped
and the Startup type is: disabled
click apply/ok
---------------------
before using hjt, disable spybots tea timer so it will allow the changes to the BHO's:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.
------------------------
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

Alright, I followed the directions and checked the entries for removal, fixed them, ran VundoFix, and rebooted. However, on generating my HJT log, I noticed that many of the BHO and even the efcyxxx (O20)/ sstqr (O20 only, as compared to BHO as well). Also, I noticed that SpyBot Resident didn't inform me of changes to the userinit/winlogon (ntos.exe). Does this mean that we can remove this entry and prevent the other BHOs from reloading or something (if ntos is even related!).

I don't know what to make of it. Here's the HJT log:

hi JonTec,

ok thanks for the info. another download to run:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
* Choose your usual account.

* Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
* Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
* It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
* Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
* Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

This seemed to really work: Resident reported that ntos.exe was trying to be removed from the userinit. I allowed it and there was not attempt to change it back.

hi JonTec,
before using hjt, disable spybots teatimer:
--------------------------------------
looks like that did the trick. you can run hjt, select these- click fixed checked:
