Hi,

I'm having a difficult time removing Troj.PrintSpool. I've realized that it's linked to a service called "Print Spooler Service" (the legit one is called "Print Spooler", I believe). Every time Spybot S&D scans, it picks up this malware, and claims that it's fixed after I hit the button to fix the problem. It shows up every time I restart the computer, though.

It's usually a randomly named process that starts with windows that's rewritten every time the computer is started.

I'm currently on the computer via LogMeIn, controlling it remotely. I'm hoping I can fix this without a reboot, although my hopes might be too high with that, haha. If nothing can be done without a reboot (it currently isn't in Safe Mode), then this can wait until tomorrow. I'd just like to get a general idea of what I could do to fix this.

Nevermind! Fixed it myself. I followed the steps in this post, basically:

However, I did change one or two steps. I didn't need to run Killbox. I basically followed the HijackThis steps, then I went to services.msc, checked to make sure the Printer Spooler Service was still disabled from last time (before a restart), and then used the sc delete <service_id> command to delete it.

Lastly, I ran Spybot S&D, and that removed the registry keys for Troj.PrintSpool.

This was all done in Safe Mode.

I rebooted into normal mode, ran HijackThis, and here's the log:

That's actually the log after I rebooted twice into normal mode (just to be sure). The Print Spooler Service is gone from the services list (services.msc), and Spybot no longer detects the Troj.PrintSpool infection.

I still had to go into the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder afterwards and delete all the executables the PrintSpool infection had created (there were at least 30, all with completely random and obvious names). It was pretty easy to find them after sorting by Date Modified, and seeing all the processes with the same exact filesize.

No special tool was needed to delete those files from the SYSTEM32 folder, and nothing new came up after reboot (this is after all those previous steps, of course).

Anyway, I believe I'm all set. I posted the HijackThis log anyway, in case someone wants to look at it.
