View Full Version : Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 - found on PC, please help
Hello Gurus
I am new to this forum and been hit with a problem recently. My Spybot scanner detected Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888. I tried to fix it and immunize using Spybot but after rebooting and rescanning the damn thing keeps showing up over and over again!
My AVG Anti-virus program (Free version) also finds nothing.
I did a scan using the SmitFraudFix by S!Ri and here below is the log.
I hope someone can help me get rid of this effectively. Thanks a bunch in advance Gurus.

If you have malware problems, read and follow the directions.
Thanks
Thanks for your reply and apologies for not being able to get back earlier. I have read & understood your directions; my apologies also for posting the SmitFraudFix log without you asking for it.
For now, I will try to follow the steps suggested by you to clean up my PC using Spybot, run the online virus scan & HJT and genrate the respective logs.
Do you want me to post the log back in this forum?

Hi Mr. Mo, I understand how stressed folks get when their computer is sick, owning three myself. Once you follow the directions, if you believe you have malware issues, please post the symptoms, any error messages you receive from Windows "word for word" and at least a HJT log. Add any comments you think will help. Please follow these instruction to get a new version of HJT:
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
http://hijack1.trend-braintree.com/hjt/eval/HijackThis.exe
Download it to your Program Files folder.
Doubleclick the HijackThis_V2.exe to start it.
Click "Do a System Scan and save a logfile"
This will create a HijackThislog.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply
Thanks...Phil

Thanks for returning your information, I will look at your scan reports first:
C:\Documents and Settings\Mohammad Shahid\Local Settings\Temp\ <<< delete the contents of that folder (not the folder)
C:\VundoFix Backups\ <<< delete all things Vundofix from your computer. If you every need it again, it must be downloaded new because of updates.
Trend Micro on-line scan found 2 vulnerabilities but no infections
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884933
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833987/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883987/en-us <<< the number does not match the article?
Could you have made a typo error?
One way or another, these appear to be updates that should have been made to your programs when they were released. If you have questions about this, I would refer them to Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/
Let's do some cleaning:
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.
3) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {927EE6E4-4355-4438-B32D-A3EFD36D6B50} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\qporjajb.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: khfdaww - khfdaww.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: wineil32 - wineil32.dll (file missing)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
5) Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.

Post the AVG Anti-Spyware scan report and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running.
Thanks...Phil
Thanks for the advice Phil.
Just wanted to clarify something (apologies for my ignorance here!) - there are lots of sub-directories/folders under C:\Documents and Settings\Mohammad Shahid\Local Settings\Temp\ ; I guess I need to delete all these sub-directoried/folders too?
Some of the files could not be deleted (error saying files locked by other programs or files are write protected). Can I delete them in SafeMode or is there another way to delete the content of the Temp directory?
Thanks.

There are usually old files from the creation that don't delete, make sure you get the ones mentioned. AVG will also pick up on stuff like that during the scan if it is bad. Finish the instructions and then run the scan that found them again to make sure they are gone.
are lots of sub-directories/folders under C:\Documents and Settings\Mohammad Shahid\Local Settings\Temp\ ; I guess I need to delete all these sub-directoried/folders too? The scan only located two bad items. Wait until you run the Anti-Spyware scan then run that scan again and see what happens.
If you have questions about any particular files, you can scan them free here:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, I personally allow almost no cookies on my computers:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/privacy/config.mspx
The few I allow are for passwords and other security...your call.
As far as I can see, your HJT log is clean of malware, I suggest this now:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx
AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
