I began having some problems today with spyware/malware and I don't think I've got everything taken care of.

I first noticed the issue (actually Avast did) and then things started to steamroll from there. Avast threw up a warning that it detected something, but I was unable to perform the suggested action. And then this strange spyware "program" installed itself, which I was able to uninstall myself without it showing up again (I forget the name, I apologize, but it was something like "spyware 2007").

I think ran a series of programs that I've used before successfully (spybot, adware, panda online) and I'm still having a lingering problem. The problem is that when I attempt to view a windows media file in a browser (firefox) it crashes firefox. If I click to see the technical details, the problem is this 'cbayw.dll' file. I found it in my system32 folder and it was installed the day the problems started.

I've had no other issues and I'm usually very careful - I use Avast. I run spybot on a bi-monthly basis. I use firefox. I'm concerned!

Any help would be much appreciated!

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_01\ <<< very out of date and probably the reason you are infected. Download the newest version and uninstall ALL old versions in Add Remove programs.

Reboot

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit

I'm not sure why the Vundofix log says I have an older version of Java. Maybe it doesn't say that and I'm just reading it wrong. I removed the old version of Java and installed JAva SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 (most recent) before I started all of the other steps, like you said.

Thanks again for your help!

I just made an attempt to use windows media player in firefox again, and a new file came up as the problem.

This time it was: yabcy.dll

I guess I still have some problems.

Thanks for returning your information, I would concentrate on removing this junk, keep the computer offline unless you are troubleshooting, this can be tough! You have not come close to removing all of the Vundo files. Watch them in the 020 area of the HJT log:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: nnnkijj - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nnnkijj.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: yabcy - C:\WINDOWS\system32\yabcy.dll
There are also 02 BHO's of the same item but the 020 Winlogon's are the tough ones to remove because of when they logon to the computer.
Watch the HJT log until you no longer see these strange files in the 020 area of the HJT log.
This: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WgaLogon.dll <<< is legitimate

Sometimes it can several attempts by Vundofix to kill them. If you see that this is not going to happen, upload them to Atribune so they can be added to the fix and do this:

Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box
above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the
next window opens, copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add
File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.

Here are the file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nnnkijj.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yabcy.dll
But you also want to watch, this junk can morph and create new files. Once they have been deleted then do this:

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to DomainService and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(some lines may be gone, removed by the fix, don't be concerned)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: yabcy - C:\WINDOWS\system32\yabcy.dll
O23 - Service: DomainService - - C:\WINDOWS\system32\lpvdrsoe.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lpvdrsoe.exe <<< delete that file

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post the Vundofix report and a new HJT log.

OK - I did everything you suggested that I do. I had to add a few files to vundofix remove them. I also noticed that one file appeared while I was doing this : mlljg.dll. But I believe I have that file removed now.

Thanks again for your help!! How are things looking?

The DomainService that I disabled - what is that? Was that a program that was causing some of this? I'm curious.

And I just tested my Windows Media Player in Firefox, and it works now. No more errors with some strange .dll file.

Nice job with the complex instructions:bigthumb:

The DomainService that I disabled - what is that? Was that a program that was causing some of this? I'm curious.
As I said, they call the junk what they want and they install it anywhere to keep you from being able to remove it. For instance:
http://www.google.com/ <<< search for lpvdrsoe.exe =
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=lpvdrsoe.exe&btnG=Google+Search

CastleCops: http://www.castlecops.com/O23.html > search for DomainService
In that particular case I see that one a lot recently with Vundo otherwise I would have had to ask you to scan the file I could not identify.

Here is information about that junk for you:
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html

http://www.revenews.com/wayneporter/archives/adware-spyware-greynets/getting_the_fix_on_winfixer_aol_network_now/

You have a clean HJT log, you may rename HJT if you wish. Please delete the Vundofix tool, it does not update, delete any other tools you used for the fix. The exception is ATF-Cleaner which is a nice small tool that you may share with friends if you wish.

Let's finish like this: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

If you want to run a good free trial to check for hidden junk, use this one with these instruction, delete or quarantine anything it finds and post the scan results if you have questions.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:

pskelley:

Thanks again! I truly appreciate everything you've done. It all seems to be OK now.

When all of this began, Avast saw what was happening and alerted me of it, but the program was unable to stop it. Why is that? Is it because the computer was already infected and Avast finally noticed it when the spy/malware began to do its thing?

I ran AVG anti-spyware and it found a number of cookies, but they were sucessfully deleted without problems so I feel no need to post the results. I also did another HJT scan and everything seemed OK - it was the same as the last one you reviewed for me.

Thanks so much for your help!
