I ran Spybot S&D several times in the past few days. My little sister has been using the computer, so when it started to get popups and slow down extremely, I was concerned. Spybot found and got rid of Command Service as well as many tracking cookies from various places, but it can't seem to get rid of the three entries of Smitfraud-C.CoreService :banghead:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. The HJT log is posted below:

Hello,

I notice that you do not seem to be running Antivirus software and a Firewall. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
That's why I want you to install them first!!

Avira (http://www.free-av.com/), AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/) OR Active Virus Shield (http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp) (uncheck the Security Toolbar during install) are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!
Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/) OR Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm) are FREE firewalls.

Understanding and using firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=60)

Reboot your computer afterwards.
After reboot, perform a full scan with your Antivirus and let it remove anything it is finding. Then reboot once again in order to delete files that were in use previously.

Post a new HijackThislog in your next reply - then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

Hello,

* Download Combofix (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

I downloaded Combofix as you suggested and ran it. It completed the scan, but after reboot it never came back up. I wasn't sure if rerunning it would be helpful, but I did get the HTJ log which is below. Let me know if I should run combofix again.

Hi,

I see from your log that Combofix was still running after reboot. You really have to wait till the logfile opens.
Look on your C:\ if there's a combofix.txt present and copy and paste the contents here.

also, I notice I have some old aol software running that doesn't affect AIM, I wasn't sure if this is a good thing since I can't seem to find any AOL program files... just curiousNot sure what you mean here, but the aolsoftware.exe is a part of your AIM here.

There is a combofix.txt file but it's not showing as a txt file, it's showing as a batch file. I'm not really sure whats going on...

in any case, I did wait.. I actually left my computer alone for about 7 hours to make sure.

Ok, do next please..

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
(fsbl.exe - graphical user interface)
Double-click fsbl.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found - if found, so don't worry it tells that there were no files found.
In case hidden files were found, Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there...
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
I need that log later.

Then, * Download Deckard System Scanner (http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dds.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
The scan may take a minute. When the scan is complete, a text file will open - main.txt
A folder (C:\Deckard\System Scanner) will also open which contains the main.txt and an extra.txt.
Copy and paste the contents of main.txt in your next reply. (Do not post the extra.txt - only post this when being asked) together with the log from blacklight.

Funny things going on there...

Anyway, let's see if Combofix runs in Windows Safe mode, but first, I want you to remove the current Version of Combofix and redownload it again from here: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe. This version is updated and also since I want to be sure that all components are present and your Antivirus doesn't delete related components... because I've seen this as well, that some Antivirus may flag certain components dropped by Combofix which results in the tool not properly working.
Do not run Combofix.exe yet.

Then,

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Windows Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times.
Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.
If you can't get into Windows safe mode, using above method, please let me know. Don't force it by using other methods!

Then run Combofix and post the log afterwards if present.

alright. I tried to restart and enter into safe mode.

I got the screen, selected safe mode with no networking, and pressed enter. it made me choose a partition... which was odd because there was only one. but I selected it. and it began starting up in safe mood.. listing a bunch of different files, but safe mode never started. I tried it several times. no luck.

Anyway, Can you rename Hijackthis.exe to Analyse.exe
Then scan with Analyse.exe and post the log in your next reply (which will be a hijackthislog ofcourse)

Hi,

Please delete the version of combofix you are having, because since we are already 3 weeks further, it has been updated and now it should normally run (since I guess it's a FAT32 in your case here which explains why it didn't run previously).

But first,

Check and fix next entry in HijackThis:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [imuk] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\imuk\imukm.exe

Then, * Re-Download Combofix (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe) to your desktop.

If that still doesn't work and no logfile is created (no C:\Combofix.txt), then do next instead:

* Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

* Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Windows Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times.
Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi,

Only leftovers here...
Navigate to the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files

In there, there will be a folder called "à?pPatch".
It will most probably look like appPatch. Delete that folder.
DON'T delete the AppPatch folder present in your C:\Windows - folder, because that's a good one !!!

Then, * Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

Folder::
C:\Program Files\Common Files\imuk
C:\WINDOWS\QUpJTE9O

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Clean logs again.

Delete the C:\Qoobox folder.

Let me know how things are now. :)

New logs below, and everything seems much better now. I still have popups occasionally but it's just the result of a cookie or something simple. My computer is still a bit on the slow side, but it's getting older.. it's about 4 years old in the computer world... it was running just fine up until lately. I want to ask you about defragmenting it... someone I know suggested it... I don't think it's ever been done, and I don't really know a lot about it. I'm much more... software oriented.. I know little to none about the actual background workings of a computer.

Hi,

Logs still look clean :)

Read here how to defragment: http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/windows/instructions/defrag.htm
In your case, it may take a long time to defragment since you have never done it before and your system is a FAT32.

Glad I could help. :)

Please read my Prevention page (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html) with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html).

Happy Surfing again!
