Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

As soon as we get you clean, you need to get SP2 installed, you cannot get critical updates until you do!

How did you get this junk, it has to be downloaded? You also have WinAntiVirus Pro 2007 which also is downloaded?

If you still need help please read and follow the direction, do not quote or code your logs, copy and paste them unless reqested other wise.

Let's give this a try first and see what happens:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to StService and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

4) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall PCTurboPro_Free, WinAntiVirus Pro 2007, WebSecureAlert and any other program you know does not belong there.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.searching.net/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UPCTPcw] C:\Program Files\PCTurboPro_Free\UPCTPcw.exe -c
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [uwa7pcw] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinAntiVirus Pro 2007\uwa7pcw.exe" -c
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rtasks] C:\Program Files\WinAntiVirus Pro 2007\rtasks.exe

O23 - Service: StService (SServ) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\PCTurboPro_Free\AtlServ.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\PCTurboPro_Free\ <<< delete that folder

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinAntiVirus Pro 2007\ <<< delete that folder

C:\Program Files\WebSecureAlert\ <<< delete that folder

7) Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the scan report from AVG Anti-Spyware and a new HJT log.

Thanks

pskelly, thanks for responding. My apologies for quoting logs earlier. I did read the before you post thread but focused on the technical details rather than the post etiquitte.

my goal is to get sp2 and norton360 on this machine. this is my in-laws PC, and they just got DSL and are going through a bit of a learning curve.

I followed your instructions, but noted some discrepancies:

-- In step 5, many of the entries you mention were gone, presumably from the uninstalls of step 4.
-- In step 6, all of these folders were gone already, again, likely due to step 4
-- I ran AVG Anti-Spyware with the settings as instructed, but it did not produce a log for me. Looked for appropriate timestamp logs in the install directories but did not find anything. Everything was removed with the exception of "Adware.Generic" which had an error.

Updated HJT log here:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Everything looks good in the HJT log, not quite sure why you could not produce the log in AVG Anti-Spyware but I know they just released a new version and the tutorial I use might need to be updated. As long as you deleted what it found.

If you are having no malware issues, let's do this then:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

You should be good to go sor SP2, here is some information to help:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:
