View Full Version : Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 and variants
Hey guys and gals,
Like so many people before me, I can't seem to find a solution to the Smitfraud spyware. I've read the "BEFORE you POST" thread and followed all instructions. Hopefully this helps.
Let me know if I am missing a step or what I should do next.
I've run SpyBot, McAfee, and a few other spyware detectors in safe mode and regular mode but nothing seems to get rid of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< looks like this is the outdated version you are running and probably the reason for being infected. Download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.
The hackers hide their junk from HJT, either rename HJT.exe or delete the version and download this new one:
C:\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe <<< located there.
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™
http://hijack1.trend-braintree.com/hjt/eval/HijackThis.exe
Download it to your Program Files folder.
Doubleclick the HijackThis_V2.exe to start it.
Click "Do a System Scan and save a logfile"
This will create a HijackThislog.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply

I downloaded the latest version of Java after uninstalling all older versions. Hopefully that will fix any leaky holes.

I uninstalled both the Viewpoint Media application and the Viewpoint Manager. I'm assuming those came with AOL Instant Messanger and I hadn't noticed someone installed them. Thanks for the heads up!
I'm not sure why the HTML file was running from the desktop or what it was, but I found the file and deleted it.
I also renamed the HJT application to tgeary.exe as suggested, rebooted the computer, and ran the file from the Program Files folder. I got the following results:

I'll give you all instructions at once but understand I am not rushing you and would prefer you take the time you need to read and follow the instructions carefully. Those that do have few problems removing the junk.
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.
Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"
4) Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com
(hold the reports and logs until you finish)
5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

I read through the links posted and wasn't aware of how bad this was! I was able to delete the 024 item after reading the first link, and it appears to be gone.
I followed all steps very closely. Vundo said it fixed everything. HJT was able to fix all EXCEPT the following items:

I have tried to fix those items several times, but to no avail.
I deleted the Temp folder, and the Web Buying had already been deleted. ATF Cleaner worked successfully.
It seems like the computer is running a lot less sluggish; however, I'm worried that those 2 files are all that it needs to reduplicate or stay alive.
What's my next step?

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I see Vundofix is showing that old version of Java, please be sure nothing is running on the computer but the newest version.
Let me ask, since you know the files the fix would not remove, if you have followed the instructions to upload them to Atribune so he can add them to the fix? We may need to use the fix once he has done that?

To help with your awareness, Vundo has 02 BHO's and 020 Winlogon, the second is the hard one to remove because they log on so early in the boot process. You have two files and more may show up because they do morph. Watch the 020 Winlogon area, here is what was still in the log which should have be uploaded earlier.

You have no other valid 020 winlogon items so anything showing up would be Vundo. Here is what I would like you to try, read and follow the directions carefully.
1) Turn off Windows Defender like before.
2) If you uploaded the files, delete Vundofix and download it new. It does not update. If you did not follow the directions, then try the fix again, you know what you are looking for. If Vundofix won't remove either of those files or anything else that happens to show up, upload those files if you have not done so.
3) Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the next window opens, copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.
Files to add, unless something new shows and has to be added also:

Post the Vundofix report and a new HJT log.

Wow, I feel dumb. I apologize for missing the http://www.uploadmalware.com/ step. However, I was able to submit both files about an hour ago.
I re-read your previous two posts just to be cautious, and ran both a newly downloaded VundoFix and HJT. I had to add the cbxvwxu.dll file but VundoFix recognized vturq.dll. Both files were successfuly deleted (note that I accidentally added the cbxvwxu.dll file and deleted it three times).
Both files then came up as missing in the 02 - BHO section of the HJT scan, so I fixed them and restarted the computer, re-ran VundoFix to be safe and re-ran HJT as well.
Hopefully things will now be clean. Let me know. Thanks!

Not to worry:bigthumb: the instructions are complex and your emotions are high because of the sick computer. I have three and go crazy when anything happens to one.
You left only one line in the HJT log:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6226628E-E5E9-4A67-9E5D-D3CEB97F1B24} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvvs.dll (file missing)
and it is a dead Vundo line that can be removed with HJT. (WinDef may need to be off?)
Let's do this now: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Once you have purged System Restore I suggest you run the eTrust Antivirus scan again to make sure it is finding nothing.
If you want to run a good free trial to check for hidden junk, use this one with these instruction, delete or quarantine anything it finds and post the scan results if you have questions.

Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
