View Full Version : Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 (and many others...)
Hi Guys, I have had problems for nearly 2 months now with various malicious infections. At the worst point, I could not boot into Windows, but managed to get past that with some help from a colleague and a manual system restore. But I now fear that my machine is overwhelmed.
The trojans COLLECTED and GENERIC keep appearing in various versions; AVG Anti-virus heals them but they keep coming back. Lately, SpyBot Anti-spyware has found Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 and Vitumonde. It removes them but again they keep returning - from what I've read they are very resistant to removal. I also have Ad-Aware and AVG (was Ewido) Anti-spyware installed. Windows updates for XP with SP2 are all up to date and I run MS IE and Firefox. My Firewall is Zone Alarm.
PLEASE can somebody help rid my machine of these problems, as I am rapidly losing the will to ever use a computer again!!!

Vundo hides itself if process namesd HijackThis is running, that's why it needs to be renames. As you can see, there are now 02 and 020 entries, too :)
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.
Reboot.
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
o Scan Options:
+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

I ran some scans last night and Spybot S&D found "Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888". Although it advised that it had removed it, its still here. AVG Anti-Virus also pops up with infection notices.

I deleted the 3 files & recycle bin and have tonight run the following scans:
AVG Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Spyware
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware
They are all clear! :eek:
I don't want to celebrate just yet, as I have had some 'false dawns' before (prior to joining on this forum of course!). So I think I'll browse the net tomorrow and then run the scans again, to be sure.

Hi Shaba, I still have problems.
Spybot S&D scan found and removed something called "Zango". Now, I can't find a tool or method for producing a log or report in Spybot(?) I did try.
A Kaspersky scan was clean. Whilst this scan was running AVG detected 2 threats, which I could not heal or move to vault. These were both for: "Generic4.OUN" which has been rearing its ugly head right from the start. The paths were:

C\Documents and Settings\Louisa\Local Settings\Temp\wkherbwm.dll
When I deleted the 3 files the other day, only the .exe file appeared in the Recyle Bin. The 2 .dll files didn't go into the Recycle Bin. Do you think those 2 .dll files have recreated themselves as above?

it to desktop.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit to close ATF-Cleaner.
To create a Spybot S&D log you need to switch Spybot into advanced mode.
Then go to tools - view report - there check all boxes , then click view report.
You can export the report and attach it to your next post.

Unfortunately, I could not find the folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Louisa\Local Settings\Temp
There was no folder called 'Local Settings' within the 'Louisa' folder.
I ran the ATF Cleaner and freed 280.918MBS on XP and 7,612.000KBS on Firefox.
I ran the following scans which were clean:
AVG Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Spyware
Spybot S&D
I ran a Lavasoft Ad-Aware scan which found and removed tracking cookie as detailed below: (I edited out the first part which was all Normal).
A HJT scan is also attached. I will continue to test and scan over the next few days, unless you advise of a different course of action.

Ok, here's what happened:
I removed the hidden status and located the Temp folder. When I opened it there were many other folders and files. Before I could delete these objects I started to get AVG Threat Alerts for Generic4.OUN, one after another. Each time it let me Heal them. The objects were:

Every time I would Heal one, another Alert would appear. So I just clicked Select All and pressed Delete. A message did appear saying one file was a system file and did I want to delete it? I said Yes to All (to hell with it!). Everything was deleted except a file called ~DF583.tmp I scanned this file with AVG Anti-Virus and AVG Anti-Spyware and it was clean.
I will continue testing and scanning. Is there anything else you suggest at this point? :)

Kaspersky scan was clean, as were scans using my resident tools:
AVG Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Spyware
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware
Just 2 tracking cookies were found.
Nothing strange has happened and there have been no threat alerts.
I've been quite busy recently and haven't used to PC too much, so I would like to test some more up until the weekend, when hopefully I can be sure that its clean and can officially sign off:)

Everything was looking good - no threat alerts, no problems, Kasperskys scan fine. However, my latest AVG Anti-Virus scan found Trojan Horse 'SHeur.JH'
in C:\Documents and Settings\Amy\My Documents\Google_Updater.exe
AVG deleted it.

All is looking better now. I re-ran AVG Anti-Virus this morning and it was clean. As were Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware scans. AVG Anti-Spyware found and deleted 8 tracking cookies.
In view of this, when do you want to close the thread if no further problems are found?
I know you are busy and I don't want to take any more of your time than is necessary, but I would like a little longer to be sure the machine is clean...
