Hi,

I've just picked up an infection of Torpig on my laptop and have been following the instructions in http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

I've done the following:-

- SpyBot cannot get rid of it normally
- Reoot with Spybot starting up and it cannot get rid of it
- Booted up in Safe Mode and it says it got rid of it but when I start Windows XP again it is there again.
- I cannot get to the end of running the eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
- I cannot seem to get the Trend Micro Online Scan to kick off - the idle bar towards the bottom left hand corner just sits there

The log file from HJT is:-

Which looks like it fixed Torpig but I'd really appreciate some feedback from someone who knows from looking at this.

There appears to be something still there as something keeps trying to connect to the Internet when I have the network disconnected.

The Symantec corporate virus scanner we have picks up Trojan.Vundo and Trojan.LowZones but when I run the Vundo Removal Tool from Symantec it says "Trojan.Vundo has not been found on your computer". I have run it in both XP and XP Safe modes.

Any help really appreciated.

Thanks

G'Day and thanks for the additional information, that renaming thing works with a Vundo infection (hackers hide it fromm HJT.exe) and you sure have one. Here's some info about this junk:
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/search.aspx?q=winfixer+msn
http://www.revenews.com/wayneporter/archives/adware-spyware-greynets/getting_the_fix_on_winfixer_aol_network_now/

I'll give you all of the information at once, but please do not think I am rushing you. I encourage you to read and follow the directions carefully. Those that do have few problems removing this junk.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

4) Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

(hold the report and log until you finish)

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(some items may be gone, removed by Vundofix. Don't be concerned)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jvlriymc.dll <<< delete that file

(if you have trouble with that file, use this tool and instructions)
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the Vundofix report, a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

Cheers...Phil

G'Day to you too Phil - boy am I glad to hear from you!

Thanks for the instructions, have followed them step by step and here's what I found:-

- At step (5), couldn't find 02 - BHU.... vtutu.dll the first time around but when I was running the new HJT log it was in there so I fixed it the second time around.

- I couldn't find the file "C:\windows\system32\jvlriymc.dll"

Here are the two log files:-

Oh, and I forgot to say - thanks for the class action bit too - I'm sitting here in Melbourne, Australia and I've just gone and grabbed a glass or two of wine to help me lower my bloodpressure a bit!!!

Thanks once again

Thanks mate for returning the information. Sadly I must report we have not been successful in remove the junk. Let me give you some information. This infection shows in the 02 BHO and 020 Winlogon areas of the log. The 020 Winlogons are the tough buggers to remove, thus the Vundofix tool, because of when they log on during the boot process. Here are what I see that needs to go, I will show you both, but you want to watch the ones in the 020 Winlogon because once they are gone the BHO's are a snap to remove with HJT. Here is what is in this HJT log: Scan saved at 10:38:44 PM, on 27/06/2007

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7C24493F-3D23-4258-9426-42C5FC3B8211} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnklig.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmnklig - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pmnklig.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FA7E6DCF-4433-4C02-A9EE-FA01803AED55} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyw.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebyw - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyw.dll

Understand also, if we don't kill them, they can morph and change names. Run the Vundofix again and watch the next log for those two in the 020 Winlogon area of the HJT log. If they are still there then follow the directions to sent them to Atribune so he can add them to the fix:

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

Then I will post another method for adding the files in these instructions. First, these programs may block the changes, so turn them off:

1) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

2) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

3) Now run the Vundofix to see if it can find and kill them, watch to see they "has been deleted" and are gone from 020 Winlogon.

4) If not then follow the easy instruction to send the files to Dave to help the next mate.

5) Now do this with the files that would not be removed:
Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, then point your mouse to the white box
above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the
next window opens, copy and paste the files into the boxes and click on Add
File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.

Using these files as an example so you know what to copy/paste to the tool:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pmnklig.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyw.dll

6) Post the Vundofix report and a new HJT log.

Cheers...Phil

Hi Phil,

Not to worry - I'm sure we'll get it sorted out. Talk about a battle betwen good and evil - I hope you're light sabre is fully charged!

I removed AVG last night as it didn't seem to bring much to the party.

- ran Vundofix and it picked up "gebyw.dll" so that was good

- I went to www.uploadmalware.com and uploaded the "pmnklig.dll"

- then followed your "Add more file" instructions to point Vundofix to "pmnklig.dll" and it said it could remove it and then I rebooted

- ran Vundofix again and it picked up three more, so it removed them and rebooted. The logfile is:-

VundoFix V6.5.1

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.5.0.7

Hopefully we're getting closer - looking at the 02 BHO and 020 Winlogons it looks to the uninitiated that we're getting closer. Fingers and toes crossed.

Hey Fritz, I carry a CZ40MM, I would have had you scan with AVG Anti-Spyware if that is what you mean. I use it because it is easy for folks and they just released a new version. Not to worry though, we have many tools we can use once Vundo has been defeated, and it looks like it has:bigthumb:

Let's do some cleanup now.

1) Follow the instructions to turn off Windows Defender

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0A6F1556-13CF-49F4-A45E-8BF710E096F2} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyw.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7C24493F-3D23-4258-9426-42C5FC3B8211} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnklig.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {800220F6-F479-4410-AE24-2AAC10BA6703} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnno.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) run cleanmgr
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Remove all of the tools we downloaded for the fix and rename HJT if you wish. Here is a nice faq sheet on HJT:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=faq
It can do so much more than scan and present a HJT log.

To help with all of those junk cookies you store.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/privacy/config.mspx

Let's look at another Panda Scan results (edit out the cookies if you did not delete them) and a last HJT log. How is the computer running now?

Cheers...Phil

And Spybot keeps picking up this as well

Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888

Settings (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3222995200-3812719251-3761202668-1186\Software\Microsoft\aldd

And it says it fixes it but then it's back when I scan again...

I believe it is a false positive, like a leftover key in the registry, but if you want it gone, follow this tutorial by Blade81.
Just use your numbers instead of those. Please take a moment to back up the registry:
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=68037
Which you should do anytime you work in the registry.

Cool - the CZ40 I find on google doesn't look like a light sabre to me!

Should I reinstall AVG Anti-Spyware? I just wasn't sure how many to run and I have Spybot and Ad-Aware on there plus Windows Defender.

- Ran HJT and removed the three items as indicated

- Ran cleanmgr as indicated

- Have turned System Restore back on and created a Restore point

- Downloaded and ran CCleaner via one of the links on cookies

- I've turned Real-Time protection back on in Windows Defender

There are a couple of suspect files that I can see:-

- This one "WindowsStartup.exe" was in my Startup folder so I moved it to the Desktop when the problems started happening

- This one "gghdwaq.exe" is in C:\ and is dated around the time the problems started happening

Googling them points to them being suspect - what should I do with those?

The only other question is when Symantec picked up the LowZones trojan I followed their removal process. The last step of the process is to "click on the Restricted Sites Icon and remove any web sites from the list that you want to have access to" - I miss-read this and started deleting items from the list as I had to do in the previous two steps. How do I re-populate that list so that it includes the restricted sites I deleted?

Ran the fix.reg with my numbers in it and it ran but then when I re-boot the Smitfraud entry appears in Spybot S&D again

Here's the log from Panda Activescan - it picked up two things:-

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/Winpopup Not disinfected C:\Program Files\WinPop\UnInstall.exe
Potentially unwanted tool:Application/NirCmd.A Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe
And here's the one from HJT:-

Symantec Auto-Protect has just popped up its ugly head again with the following:- Risk = Torjan.Vundo, Filename = fnvcwllo.dll

Where to from here?

Sorry - that last line sounds a bit rude - it wasn't meant to - I just had high hopes that we were on top of this and things were returning to normal on the PC front. At least the Internet Explorer pop-ups / redirects to odd and lewd sites have stopped!

1) Should I reinstall AVG Anti-Spyware?
Only if you want to, I keep it onboard not running as a backup scanner. They allow free updates but there is just no realtime protection unless you pay for it. I will provide links from experts you should read, Javacool has free programs, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard that you will read about.

2) There are a couple of suspect files that I can see:-
I know the second is Vundo, I see Symantec seeing a Vundo file at the end of your post. Remember that no two scans call the files the same thing, that one file can be both instances. I suggest you move both files to the Recycle Bin (delete them) and after a few days with no problems, empty the Bin.
(make sure the bin has not been bypassed and if you use ATF-Cleaner don't check the Bin)

3) The only other question is when Symantec >>> etc.
If you are talking about a restricted zone within the Symantec software, I do not use it so you would have to contact them or look around the Symantec site for faq's. The programs I mentioned earlier (SB/SG) work in this area as you will read, here are tutorials to look at:
Also suggested by the experts is a good hosts file if you don't run one, I'll include a tutorial for one.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial53.html

4) Ran the fix.reg with my numbers in it and it ran but then when I re-boot the Smitfraud entry appears in Spybot S&D again
Make sure you followed the directions, you did change the numbers to your numbers...correct. The numbers in the regfix I posted were for a different computer which I noted in the instructions. If you did all of this, I suggest you ask here: http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4

5) Here's the log from Panda Activescan - it picked up two things:-
C:\Program Files\WinPop\ <<< delete the folder

C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe <<< see the link, this may be valid?

Could be left from a tool you or I ran? Scan the files or move it to the Bin. Just look at the properties to be sure it is not associated with any valid process. Pays to be safe, usually easier than locating and replacing a needed file.

6) Your HJT list looks fine as far as malware. You run a lot of stuff that probably does not need to run at every startup and make boot times slow, plus uses resources needed by the resource pig Norton/Symantec. Look in the links I provide to use MSConfig to control this.

7) Symantec Auto-Protect has just popped up its ugly head
I covered this a bit earlier, it may be one of the two items found just being called by Symantec's name.

Let's do this now: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

And I will provide you with information to start looking at.

Some good information for you:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

Let's see if we can get this scan to run, one of the better scans available, it will not remove anything, but it will find anything left. Make sure all of the above instructions are completed before you run it so it does not locate stuff that should have been removed.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Standard
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log into your next reply.

Thanks

Hi Again,

1) Should I reinstall AVG Anti-Spyware? I haven't reinstalled it but I will look at the ones you have suggested

2) There are a couple of suspect files that I can see:-Deleted them but Vundo popped up again last night and again this morning in Symantec so turned off System Restore and I ran VundoFix again this morning and this is the log from it:-

VundoFix V6.5.4

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.5.0.7
Old versions of java are exploitable and should be removed.

Java version is 1.5.0.10

Scan started at 9:49:06 AM 29/06/2007

Listing files found while scanning....

C:\windows\system32\cnqgaxhm.dll
C:\windows\system32\ifudvxbm.ini
C:\windows\system32\mbxvdufi.dll
C:\windows\system32\mrfxhkmr.dll
C:\windows\system32\rmkhxfrm.ini

Beginning removal...

Performing Repairs to the registry.
Done!

3) The only other question is when Symantec >>> etc.Symantec seem to be struggling to help but you have been great - I will look at the tutorials you've provided

4) Ran the fix.reg with my numbers in it and it ran but then when I re-boot the Smitfraud entry appears in Spybot S&D againRan Spybot S&D last night and it picked it up again so I pasted the text into fix.reg again and re-ran it and scanned again this morning and it seems to be gone now

5) Here's the log from Panda Activescan - it picked up two things:-Deleted both the folder and the file

6) Sweet

7) Will go through these tonight and sort things out at this end

Kaspersky
I cannot get this to run at work, must require something to be opened up on the firewall or similar, ours is locked down pretty tight, so I will run it at home tonight.

I get to the bit to install the ActiveX and then it just sits there popping up a logon / password to our server so it looks like there's an issue there.

Any other ideas?

Thanks a lot.

According to the date on this Vundofix report: Scan started at 9:49:06 AM 29/06/2007 You sure had hidden Vundo infection. Let's run combofix and see what it shows:

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks

Hi Phil,

Boy this is an insight into the world of viruses and malware. First time I've ever had one of these...

I have turned off Real-Time protection in Windows Defender and System Restore is off as well.

I have run ComboFix twice - the first time it moved all of my icons and the log file was too long, so I ran it again and here's the ComboFix log from just a moment ago:-

Good morning, It is good to turn off the adware programs as they tend to block changes but turn it back on as soon as you are done. System Restore should not be off, we consider a bad restore point better than no restore point in an emergency, which is what you would have with it off.

Nothing showing in combofix and the HJT log is clean. No doubt you had Vundo infection, it could be you got reinfected. Let me show you how easy it is to pick up an exploit:
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/
http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/05/the_next_net_th.html

Let's see what Kaspersky shows us.

Thanks

Hi Again!

Cleaned out the Symantec files - they were in the backups folder

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Backups

but were all the trojans etc. that we have been looking at.

Did these:-

- Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE
- Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

And here's the Kaspersky scan - looking better now - fingers crossed!

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\ <<< delete the contents of Spybot S&D Recovery.
(two suspecious items in there)

I looked up and down that list and can not spot the infected item? Perhaps it is system remove, so let's clean those again to be sure, if you spot then infected item in that report, let me know what it was.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

If everything is running ok now, I would say you are good to go.

Thanks...Phil

Hi Phil,

Done all that and created a restor point and things do seem to be running a lot better.

What do we do from here? I guess I just keep an eye on it for a week or so and fingers crossed it's all good.

I cannot convey how much I appreciate your help with all of this. I will go through all of the tutorials and set up the suggested tools and settings on both my laptop and home PC.

Do you have a charity or something like that that I could make a donation to for your time and effort?

All the best.

Fritz

Thanks good to hear, my suggestion would be to look at my post #16 for those links from experts on how to stay safe. Here is a new link that just came to me:
