I've been trying to get rid of SmitFraud-C.Toolbar888 for more than a day now. I'd really appreciate some help please!! I keep getting ad pop ups and also am repeatedly finding the following with Spybot:

Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888: Settings (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-176878976-3791665462-2292166298-1008\Software\Microsoft\aldd

I've attempted to follow some of the help suggestions in this forum (and others) and I can't seem to resolve the problem. I've tried SmitfraudFix, ATF Cleaner, AVG, VundoFix, Bruce Force Uninstaller, SDFix and have tried deleting that key from the registry and I can't get rid of it.

Here's my HJT log:

Hi and welcome to the Board

I'm Blade and I am going to try to help you with your problem. Please take a note of five things.

I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Let's remove that registry entry first.

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on the Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-176878976-3791665462-2292166298-1008\Software\Microsoft\aldd]

It should look like this -> http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/reg.gif

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here (http://www.nellie2.co.uk/file.htm#How_to_Make_a_.Reg_File_) with screenshots.)

Please download
VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4)
to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files,
click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing
Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer,
click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new
HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from
Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Hi Blade and thanks for the help. I've been mucking around with this since I posted and I'm hoping I finally have it fixed. I'm going to post a new HJT log since my latest attempt and maybe we can go from there? Thanks a ton.

As a note, I just ran VundoFix again (I tried that the other day and removed 4 things, I think) to try to get a report to post here and it comes back that it's clean and doesn't give me any sort of report.

Let me know if I ought to create that .reg file still. Thanks again!

What's Window's Defender? I just did a search for it on my computer and the only thing that shows up and the only thing that shows up is the temporary files from the website I just went to.

As a note, I had something called XP-Antispy 3.8 that hadn't been accessed in 3 years and I uninstalled that because I didn't know it was on here and obviously didn't use it.

How do I access the Windows Defender? Would it be on my programs list (it's not)?

I'm sorry. Used my other reply as template and forgot to take Windows Defender disabling away.

Some noteworthy things that didn't go per instructions.

1) After fixing the 3 issues in HJT, I was prompted to reboot for removal. So I rebooted.

2) The file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\*xkdundxr.exe* was not found.

3) I already had AVG Anti-Spyware downloaded from maybe two days ago so I just checked for updates (it said there were none) and ran it. This meant I didn't get to choose the settings (if there is some way to rechoose them I didn't see it) but I'm almost postive the settings I'd previously chosen (which I got from another thread) were the ones you provided.

4) Apparently I have failed at getting the AVG log you'd asked for. It got rid of 4 files (Adware.PurityScan it said) but when I went to save the report the only one that existed was the one from the last time I ran it. I don't know if I fouled it up somehow or if it only saves one at a time or what.

Fix this one with hjt (sorry, forgot it from my previous post):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O23 - Service: Pxhping - Sonic Solutions - (no file) <--this one can go too since there isn't file anymore

1.Click Start->run. Write:services.msc and click ok
2.Double-click on Pxhping on the list
3.Click stop and set startup type as disabled. Click apply and close the window.

Then post a fresh hjt log. :)

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab.
Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
Under the
Hidden files
folder, select
Show hidden files and folders.
Check
Hide protected operating system files.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the
Download
button to the right.
Check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

If the service pack 2 download is too large, you can order a copy on cd from microsoft here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx)

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Change the allow paste operations via script to Disable
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Stand up and be Counted.

NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.
http://images.malwarecomplaints.info/logo/MWC-logoplus4.gif (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info)
Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Vundo please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hi there. I just finished resetting the system restore and updating the things you listed.

The computer seems to be running just fine! Thanks so much for your help with this. I really appreciate it.

If you have time to answer one question regarding the 'hosts file' that was in your last reply, I'd really appreciate it too. I read the Wikipedia article about host files. Is this something that you would highly recommend? It is very useful?

Thanks again.

Hi

Yes, I strongly recommend to get that hosts file (I use it too). It definitely makes surfing safer. :)
