View Full Version : Some apps very slow others normal - pskelley please if possible
Hi,
For the last couple of months my computer has been very slow in starting some application, but this is not true for every app. For example it takes more than one minute for the splash screen of the Palm Desktop or WSFTPPro to load. It takes Outlook more than 2 minutes to load and become responsive, and my mail alternative Outlook Express although starts up fast, it takes about one minute for it to print. Other MS apps like MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or either of my browsers (Firefox and IE) and many others start up normally and work fine.
For apps that are slow in startup, when invoked the CPU does not show any abnormal usage and for the most part is idle. The I/O activity does not peak during the slowdown either.
I have logged into another profile on my machine (my wife's), and all is normal there. No slow apps at all.
Before attempting to recreate every profile and migrate all my accounts into a new account, I'd like to see if there is a Malware loading in my profile that causes this slowdown.
I am using a Vaio laptop with Pentium 4, 2.8Ghz, 1GB RAM. My Windows has the latest updates. I have 40% free space on the primary/boot internal disk partition. I have run ATFCleaner, Spybot, AVG, AdAware, and Zone Alarm scans and no Malware is being detected. I have also ran full chkdsk on my drives. One oddity is ScanningProcess.exe loading twice. It also appears as double process under Task Manager.

Neither of the files c:\windows\system32\qpsrv.exe and C:\WINDOWS\TSI32\tsircusr.exe are there. I have my explorer setup to check hidden and protected OS files, but no files under these names and paths exist. LapLink11 is an old file synchro s/w I used to use, but I am now using ViceVersa Pro instead. I thought that I had uninstalled the Laplink, but it looks like it is still there under Program Files and the path C:\WINDOWS\TSI32\ has some files under it. Laplink does not show under remove program list though.
I ran AVG Ant-Spyware 7.5 with latest definitions and nothing was detected.
Should I attempt manual removal of these?

C:\WINDOWS\TSI32\tsircusr.exe <<< are you sayin that you no longer need this item on your computer?

Thank you Phil! I cleaned up all your suggestions. I even uninstalled the TVersity media server (I use the media server s/w that comes with my DLink media server h/w for now), but the machine is still slow in this profile.

I am not sure what you mean when you talk about the HJT logs from other users, but I do not have multiple threads on this subject.Often administrators will create additional user accounts on the computer for others folks. It is possible that an infection might show in on user and not in another. The HJT log must be created while signed in to that user.
I ran AVG Ant-Spyware 7.5 with latest definitions and nothing was detected.
My question was "do you own it"? If not, it uses a lot of resources and gives no beneifts in real time once the trial is over. I would uninstall it or at least stop it from running.
I can not seeing anything in the HJT log that looks like a problem, through there is a lot of programs running all of the time. Have a look at this information: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
Take a look down the HJT list and make sure nothing is there you do not know.
I can't remember if you mentioned it but are you getting any error messags from Windows at all? Post those word for word if you do.
I believe a diagnostic is in order to see if it will show us anything. Follow the instructions to run the free diangostic and you will have to register free to be able to post the test results, let's see what that show us.

I am attaching the HJT log for a new fresh user I created for myself, which seems to be running without all the problems of my Main account. I also compared the running processes to see if I can find the culprit. The following are in my main account and not in the new acct: dllhost.exe, MDM.EXE, msdtc.exe, and rapimgr.exe.
My question was "do you own it"?My AVGAS is a trial copy, but I only use it to scan my system every now and then after updating the definitions and I close it afterward. Unless there is a process always running in the background other that avgas.exe I'd like to know about it.
Regarding PCPitstop. I ran the Optimize, and it took me through an attempt to fix and tune my system, but at the end it wanted me to buy the software. I did not proceed, and I am not sure whether it made any repairs. I post the logs separately.
I am not getting any Windows errors, with the exception of one at bootup that says: "missing boot.ini"

My AVGAS is a trial copy,
I ask the question so I know how to advise you, it uses a lot of resources and gives no benefits after the trial. I advise turning it off or uninstalling.
Regarding PCPitstop. I ran the Optimize
Not what I requested or what I want. I would not suggest a tool you have to pay for. I would appreciate it if you would run the basic diagnostic and post a link to the test results. It sounds like the error message you get is telling you what your problem is, but we may spot something to help in the diagnostic information.
I am not getting any Windows errors, with the exception of one at bootup that says: "missing boot.ini"
Is that the complete error message? Just missing boot.ini ?
If there is no more to the error message than that, you may want to look at this information:

Try this. Click Start > Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

I will follow-up with your remaining instructions, but before I do I want to reboot and get the exact error message written down. I'll be back shortly.
The exact error message I got at reboot was: "Invalid BOOT.ini file Booting from c:\windows\
I found some posting that advised to make a boot.ini file using notepad with the following text in the file:
[boot loader]

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
After building the file and dropping it in the C:\ the error message at bootup went away.
The main account still has same issue as stated at the beginning of this thread. I have been slowly building a new user account for myself and I am rebuilding all my profile settings for all the applications. Things are great with this new user account and my problems with slow apps are no longer there.
I also ran the optimize and had it fix whatever it was recommending. There did not seem to be any apparent improvement as a result of this.

I am just not sure why the main user account would perform poorly and another user account not, I would have to think there may also have been something corrupt about it also. I run into the issue once in a while with my MSN signin credentials. They will corrupt and I have to remove them and allow Microsoft to create new ones to correct the problems. This must be similiar.
I would have liked to have seen the diagnostic report, but once you use the optimize feature (that only automates what we would have done manually) the items that needed attention will no longer exist. Safe surfing and I will leave you with this valuable information.
