Hi. I run Spybot once a week, and I keep getting alerts that I have Win32.Zhelatin.k on my system. I choose Fix and then re-run Spybot and the trojan is gone. I posted a question about this in Spybot S&D at http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=15137&highlight=zhelatin.k&page=2, but Tashi suggested I'd best come over here and lay out what's happening.

I've run the preliminaries, including an online eTrust scan which came up with "130672 files scanned. No viruses found. No infections." I have all the latest updates, including SP2, having set Windows XP to announce whenever therer's one to download. I run Windows Defender weekly. I also run AVG and AdAware, and I've set my browser so only well-trusted sites can download cookies and I've got ActiveX set for prompt only. I'll post my HiJackThis log at the end of this.

I don't understand why I keep getting the same trojan coming up each week. I also get an alert called Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallBypass, which mystifies me and which I fix whenever it comes up. My Windows firewall is always on whenever I go online, so I don't know what this alert means.

Here's my HJT log:

Hello Benzmum :)

Ok at first I'd like to see the Spybot S&D's scan log (update the definitions and run a new scan first). So please post that part that shows the infections to here :bigthumb:

MrJak3, the last run I did was after I'd "fixed" the problems listed, and at that time everything came up clean which it did last week as well. But then within a week the same trojan comes back. I have no idea how to obtain a Spybot log - I didn't know it was actually possible. But here's what I got the last time I was alerted to infections:

Problem
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallBypass
Settings
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile [there may have been more at the end of that line, but I didn't get the rest - I'm typing this from a screenshot I took]
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile
Win32.Zhelatin.k
Settings
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3293823761-4021508746-203944788-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\M [missed the end of this too]

So does that mean anything to you?

Hello :)

Those don't look dangerous though I would like to see everything from the second entry....

Let's run one scan just in case...

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Scan process completed.

I can't see where it tells me what virus I've got. I took a screenshot of the window at the end of the screen, which I could send if you tell me how (assuming it's useful). Is the above enough information for you?

I sure hope there wasn't something else I needed to do because I'd hate to have to re-do the scan.

Hello :)

Ok the infection Kaspersky discovered isn't really an infection. It is just a tool from your pc's manufacturer that is flagged as a risk tool.

I need to see the exact info about the Win32.Zhelatin.k in Spybot log.

Let's do this.

Open Spybot S&D
Click on the "Recovery"
Then click on the Win32.Zhelatin.k infection that has been fixed.
Now click on the checkmark so that the entry get's expanded.

Copy the whole info about this infection to here. (if you still can't see the whole entry, try moving the border in the grey bar (next to "backup" text))

I've made a screenshot of the window containing the info re Win32.Zhelatin.k, but I'll copy what it says below. There are 3 checked lines below the Win32.Zhelatin.k line:
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3293823761-4021508746-2703944788-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache\x\greeting card.exe [Date 26/06/2007 5:18.21 PM]

P.S. My computer's painfully slow this afternoon, and I can't see any unusual processes running. I did get a travelocity ad playing on my media player about an hour ago - don't know how that got there. I try to be so careful.

Hello :)

Ok we may try to delete this manually, looks like a leftover....

Backup your registry:
Start
Run
Type the following to the box and hit Ok: regedit
A window opens, click on File
Choose Export form the menu
Change the save location to C:\
Give the filename, RegBackUp
Make sure that the filetype is set to Registryfiles (*.reg)
Click on Save and Close the window

Open Notepad (NOT WORDPAD!) and copy the following lines from the quote box below into a new document, leaving a blank line at the end. (don't forget to copy and paste the word REGEDIT4) :

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3293823761-4021508746-2703944788-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache\x\greeting card.exe]

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Save the document to your desktop as Fix.reg and filetype: All Files
Go to your desktop and double click on the file to run Fix.reg and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Use the Windows search Start
Search
All files and folders
More advanced options Checkmark these options: "Search system folders"
"Search hidden files and folders"
"Search subfolders"
Search for this and delete if found: greeting card.exe

Generate a HijackThis Startup list:
Open HijackThis: Click on "Open the Misc Tools Section"
Check the following boxes to the right of "Generate StartupList Log": List also minor sections (Full)
List empty sections (Complete)
Click "Generate StartupListLog"
Click "Yes" at the prompt.
A Notepad window will open with the contents of the HijackThis Startup list displayed
Copy & Paste that log to here

Just finished a Spybot scan, and Win.Zhelatin.k is back again, same settings as previous weeks. I've seen your posting regarding fixing my registry and I'll read that carefully, but I wanted you to see this while I have it:

Win32.Zhelatin.k
Settings
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3293823761-4021508746-2703944788-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache\x\greeting card.exe:sad:

Want to clarify please (always anxious when I poke at my registry): When I go to save RegBackUp, the file types available are "Registration files (*.reg)" or "Registry Hive Files (*.*)." I'm assuming the former is what you intended. Am I right?

Mr_JAk3

Hello :)

This is what it should be --> (*.reg)

Sorry to be pesky, but I'm wondering about the character preceding "\greetingcard.exe" in the registry entry. It looks on the screen very much like an "x," but when I was saving my backup I noticed that the file extension seems to contain the same character - i.e., on my screen it looks like "x.reg." So I'm wondering if the registry entry for Zhelatin actually contains an asterix and not an x. Will that make a difference when I "merge the contents" of Fix.reg?

And I've just finished the search for "greeting card.exe" It came up with "Greeting Card.exe" (note the difference in case), which is an ArcSoft program which came with my computer. Am I supposed to delete this program?

Hello :)

I think that the mystery is now solved.

And I've just finished the search for "greeting card.exe" It came up with "Greeting Card.exe" (note the difference in case), which is an ArcSoft program which came with my computer. Am I supposed to delete this program?

Seems that this is a flase detection as the ArcSoft's Greeting Card.exe is legitimate but there is also an infection which has a file with the same name.

I'll report this to the team to get the verification. I'll let you know the results. :bigthumb:

Thanks very much Mr_JAk3 (may I call you Jak? :) A couple more questions if I may: What exactly did Fix.reg do? I looked to me like we were copying the same line back into the registry, so how does that work? And would the fix still work ok if the character I pointed out in that registry line was actually an asterisk and not an x?

Thanks for checking this all out with the team. I'll wait to hear what you come up with.

Hi :)

Yes you can call me Jak or Jake :)

Our fix.reg didn't do anything this time...it should have removed the leftover from the registry but the x should have been that asterisk. But there is nothing to worry.

We'll wait for the results :bigthumb:

OK, Jake, I'll wait patiently to hear what the team decides regarding my possible infection. Thanks again for all your time.

My computer's been slow today, even when I've been off-line. I did my weekly backup and found heaps of mini-image files as well. They could be, I suppose, from MS and HP emails I've reviewed in the past week.

Just thought this might be of use....

The team responded here -> Link (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=101306#post101306)

hi,

thanks for reporting, it is a false positive and will be corrected with the next update scheduled for next week.

The slowness...you're looking clean. You could go through this list here -> link (http://www.castlecops.com/postitle175256-0-0-.html)
That should help :bigthumb:

Hello :)

I can see that you have a lot of programs loading with Windows. You can fix the following entries with HijackThis if you want to free your memory, these programs aren't needed to be running all the time. (this is just my recommendation, you may leave some of these running if you want)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [S3apphk] S3apphk.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PreloadApp] c:\hp\drivers\printers\photosmart\hphprld.exe c:\hp\drivers\printers\photosmart\setup.exe -d
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPDJ Taskbar Utility] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb04.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checktime] c:\program files\HPSelect\Frontend\ct.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NCLaunch] C:\WINDOWS\NCLAUNCH.EXe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Acme.PCHButton] C:\PROGRA~1\HPINST~1\plugin\bin\PCHButton.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [OM_Monitor] C:\Program Files\OLYMPUS\OLYMPUS Master\Monitor.exe -NoStart
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] c:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe
O4 - Startup: Shortcut to BigBen.exe.lnk = C:\Program Files\Big Ben\BigBen.exe

Restart the computer and see if it helped :bigthumb:

Wow! All those?? I can see at least a few right away that I can turn off. I'll double-check what the others do just to educate myself.

Thanks for the diagnosis, Jake. I'll report back. (It would be nice if I stopped being such a regular here at SNF!)

OK, I used "Fix" in HijackThis on most of the programs that were loading at startup that you said I could dispense with. There are about four or five I left because I either know I want them to continue, or I was nervous about whether I'd miss them.

Anyhow, on reboot my computer took just as long as ever to start up (~5'); but when I open an application now it starts almost instantly, which was definitely not the case before. Does that make sense? That's a lovely perk if it's going to continue.:)

I hope I disabled those startup items correctly. Hijackthis says it "removes" the selected items. Does that mean they're no longer available on my computer now? Or could I reverse my decision on one of them if I felt I needed to?

Hello :)

Those startups won't really affect the whole reboot as the windows, drivers etc will take their time to load. So the computer runs faster now and no "low memory" alerts - that's great news :bigthumb:

Yes the HijackThis has a backup function so you can restore those startups later if you want.

Any questions/issues? :bigthumb:

Ok, for now, I think. But the virtual memory alert has occurred sporadically so we won't know if all is well for maybe a week or so. I'll be in touch if I need more help - you KNOW I will! :D:

Bless you, as always, Jake. Any way we can support you volunteers?

You're very welcome :)

You can support the Spybot S&D if you wish. Our help is free but donations are always very appreciated.

I'm getting the following again:

Windows – Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low
Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied. For more information, see Help.

Do you know what's going on? Here's my latest HJT log:

Yikes! I have an icon on my status bar right now that's telling me something's "acquiring network address" and is labelled as Local Area Connection. I've looked in my processes and can't see what may be happening. I didn't a screen capture of the Local Area Connection Status. Should I post that here? I've also run HijackThis and got the following (which of course means nothing to me):

Now I'm going to pull the plug on my modem because I don't know what's going on!!

:red:I'm sorry. It did occur to me to phone my ISP provider and ask them about the mysterious icon. I found out it just means there was a temporary disruption in network traffic and they're actively getting me back online.

Apologies for being such a nervous nelly. I'm wondering if with all the updates that go on to Windows and my major applications new little things are going to pop up occasionally that I've never seen before and I've got to not assume the worst every time.

Anyhow, back to my question about virtual memory, please. Thanks for your patience....

Hello :)

OK you have a lot of programs running there so it is very likely that you just don't have enough ram memory. Do you know the amount of memory?

Log looks clean :)

Hi Jake. I have 256Mb RAM. It did occur to me that I wasn't getting these alerts before I'd installed ATF Cleaner, AVG Anti-spyware, SpywareBlaster, and MVPS Hosts. I wondered if I pushed my RAM to its limits adding them. Do you think so? I thought I'd changed my virtual memory allowance to "system managed" when the alert first came up, but I see its set to 384 Mb. So I've set it to system managed again. Do you think that'll help?

Hello :)

256 isn't much, 512 would be better...

ATF Cleaner, SpywareBlaster, and MVPS Hosts shouldn't affect your memory as the programs aren't running all the time.

AVG Anti-Spyware migth be the bugger here, you could try if uninstalling it helps. Also Ad-Aware has a service that is quite heavy...

I do run Spybot weekly, so maybe I don't need AVG's anti-spyware, huh? But do you think I can safely do without Ad-Aware? I guess it's just another variation of anti-spyware though, isn't it. If you advise, Jake, I'll uninstall them both.

One question re Ad-Aware: I'm using the free service so I believe that means it's not acting like a watchdog, right? So is it actually running in the background when I'm not doing a scan? I have to admit I'm a bit mystified about this RAM business, because I thought AVG's Anti-Spyware was the same - i.e., it wasn't running unless I was doing a scan. If that's the case with those two, how are they consuming my RAM? (not an expert techie, I'm afraid:red:)

Hi :)

Both AVG Anti-Spyware and Ad-Aware have a service installed. This service is running in the background even if you don't use the progams --> they eat memory

You could try how the computer runs without these programs. Another option is to buy more RAM...

OK, I'll uninstall both and see what happens over the next week or two. (Re more RAM: I think I'd rather save for a new computer actually, but that may take me a long time.)

Thanks, Jake. I'll report back.

Ok good :)

Also you could run this Norton/Symantec uninstaller tool as there seems to be leftovers running (these eat memory too) -> link (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039)

Thanks, Jake. I ran that uninstaller tool. I'm not sure if it did anything though. My HJT log looks the same to me. What do you think?

Thanks, that's good to hear. After I wrote last, I realized that in fact there were a lot fewer Symantec things in that last HJT log. Anyhow, fingers crossed and I'll not get anymore memory alerts!

Bless you, once again, Jake.
