View Full Version : Popups/Maybe Hijacker?

My computer was severely infected, lost internet access, and I've cleaned most of it up through an aggressive combination of Spybot, AdAware, AVG, Avast, Kaspersky and Spysweeper. However, I'm still getting pop ups, and as recently as yesterday, I was getting warning windows telling me that something was trying to change my browser page, and did I want to allow that. So I've got an HJT log, I ran the online virus scan from the site in the "Read before you Post" thread, and I'm hoping like hell that someone here can help me decipher the HJT log and tell me what to do to get my computer 100% healthy.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Not sure what we are going to run into, but we have problems to take care of first.
1) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing.
They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."

http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/2003/s1407/38s07/38s07.asp
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\
C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\
Uninstall one of those.
2) Please read this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_14\ <<< out of date, download the newest virsion and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.
3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
5) I am 99.9% sure this is a bad file and a trojan: C:\WINDOWS\csrss.exe would you scan that file with one or more of these free online scanners so I can be 100% sure, then you can proceed with removal:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D8953BD4-BCBB-445F-8543-29AFF02A02EA} - C:\Program Files\MSN\meqos.dll
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: UltimateBet - {94148DB5-B42D-4915-95DA-2CBB4F7095BF} - C:\Program Files\UltimateBet\UltimateBet.exe
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
C:\WINDOWS\csrss.exe <<< delete that file
7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running.
Thanks

So I get a small slap on the wrist, I was working on debugging after I took the log file and posted the thread, so Avast has been uninstalled already, I'm pretty sure I got rid of the Meqos BHO(at least, I can't find it now on the Spybot BHO list in the Tools menu, and it's not showing up on HJT now, I think AdAware might have nixed it). The C:\Windows\CSRSS.exe came up clean on Kaspersky, I'd already done a full system scan with Kaspersky and also with Uniblue, but I scanned that file again anyway. Problem is, it's not a Microsoft file, properties says it's a company called TSoft, and it was created on the 13th, which is about the time I started having problems. I'd already looked at it, but I wasn't sure, and I'm not a full on computer geek, I just know enough to be dangerous, so I figured I'd leave it 'til I got a more authoritative word on it.
I followed all the steps, but there's an additional problem, one that wasn't there yesterday. I've found a host of OuterInfo files on my computer, but I didn't want to just delete the ones I've found without knowing that I'd gotten them all. There's a couple of BHOs, an EXE, some PF files, a lot of stuff I don't understand. It doesn't show up on Spybot, Adaware or AVG, but I noticed it while looking at my BHO list this afternoon, just before I left for work. It does show up on the new HJT log. Still getting pop ups.
I don't believe I've been to any questionable sites recently, so I'm not sure how it just appeared but I apologize for making more work for you.

Also, I got rid of the Ultimate Bet items, but I don't think it was anything dangerous, it's just an online poker program a local radio station used for a promotional tournament. I've still got the program on my desktop, I can get rid of it with add/remove programs if you think it'd be helpful.

I was hoping it'd just let me edit my post, but apparently not, the files/folders on outerinfo that I found with Start>Search "Outerinfo" were as follows:
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Start Menu\Programs\Outerinfo
C:\Program Files\Outerinfo
C:\Program Files\Outerinfo\outerinfo.exe
C:\Program Files\Outerinfo\outerinfo.ico
C:\Program Files\Outerinfo\outerinfoupdate.exe
The 3 Prefetch files are no longer there, after the reboot, I imagine thanks to the ATF cleaner.

Christ, I feel like an idiot now. So I went to Add/Remove Programs, got rid of outerinfo, rebooted, deleted the file folder in documents and settings, can't find a trace of it now. Think I'm probably OK. I'd gotten so used to the damn near impossible to remove malware that I got thrown for a loop on the easy one. I owe you a beer buddy. Or, more probably, a case of beer. Maybe some pizza too.

Thanks for the feedback, I am fairly certain this: C:\Windows\CSRSS.exe does not belong on the computer. The valid file:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/csrss/ which I don't have and you probably do not either would be running from the System32 folder. I believe we should delete it but will look at the information you posted.
PurityScan/OIN is a nasty adware infection. If you see that much we will use a tool, but I would still like to see what is installed on your computer.
1) add/remove in the control panel.
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)
2) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
3) OK to your last comment, that was why I wanted the uninstall list, post it anyway there may be other issues I will spot.
Let's run combofix also, it is good with Purity Scan and if anything is hiding it will find it.
so...post the uninstall list, combofix log and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is performaing also.
Thanks...Phil

I had deleted the CSRSS.exe as you instructed the first time, I was just mentioning that it came up clean but was still questionable. I do actually have the CSRSS.exe in my C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder, but properties says it dates back to the creation of the OS, Aug 29 2002 and the version info on the properties tab says it belongs to Microsoft. Again, thanks a lot, the peace of mind from having a clean computer is huge.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Looking at the uninstall list first.
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 <<< I am showing there should be an update for this. Check it by clicking the little coffee cup in the Control Panel. Then the Updates Tab and check for updates. If it downloads a new version, uninstall the old one. Everything else looks fine. I notice you have Kaspersky online scanner installed. If you feel the need for a good final check, you can run that scan and post the results. If not, all I see in the HJT log is this:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
Which is not malware but just the way IE is set to a blank Start Page. HJT will remove it if you wish.
Let's do this now: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
