View Full Version : OMG! Smitfraud-C Toolbar888

I started being re-directed to other websites a few days ago. I ran AVG free, AVG Anti-Spyware, Windows Defender, and Spybot S&D. Smitfraud C Toolbar888 kept coming back. I ran eTrust antivirus, it came up with no infections, and I couldn't find how to save (much less see) a log. I restarted in safe mode and ran Spybot until I got the "no infections" found. I rebooted in normal mode, ran Hijack This and saved the log, which is below. I went online to come to this forum, and I'm still being hijacked to other websites.

You have a Vundo infection, has nothing to do with that toolbar. Here is some information.

These programs block changes, we don't want them blocking Vundofix.

1) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

2) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

3) Read and follow the directions carefully, those that do have few problems removing this junk.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

Thank you so much! The vundo fix worked. There was one file that needed to be removed after re-boot, and I'm back to normal. Thank you to all of you who are doing such a great job of keeping us safe and saving our ***es while we boldly and naive(ly) surf.

I'm off to donate to Vundo and to Spybot. Thank you thank you thank you!

Thanks for returning your information, your kind words and the feedback, just a little cleaning to do.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Use the instructions I posted to turn off Windows Defender and AVG Anti-Spyware, they will block HJT changes we must make.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Let's clean the System Restore files now: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

5) I do not know if you own AVG Anti-Spyware but it would be good to run a scan to look for hidden junk, like this: Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds. http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
If you have questions about the scan results, post them. If not AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

No need to post again unless you have problems or questions and those should be answered in these links.
