Pop-ups, etc. Not my PC, and not the first to work on it, but would like to get the issue resolved. Logs attached. Ran CA online scan, no log, but no problems found. Hijack this log is first, SpyBot S&D log (ran in safe mode) is second.

Thanks,
Kris

Hello Kris, welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

First, it would really help if you would read and follow the directions, you have posted a lot of information not requested in the "Before you Post" instructions and made both of our jobs harder. If you want to fix the problems, do so, if you want our help, please follow directions.

Scan saved at 6:28:27 PM, on 6/30/2007 <<< I am looking at this HJT log.

I will give you some information first:

1) See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< VERY outdated, download the newest versionand unistall all old versions in Add Remove programs.

2) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. My suggestion would be to uninstall it.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

now to the bad ones

3) C:\WINDOWS\system32\regscan.exe
http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/w32rbotha.html
Allows others to access the computer
Steals information
Records keystrokes
Installs itself in the Registry
Exploits system or software vulnerabilities
Used in DOS attacks

4) O23 - Service: sugo3 Status Monitor Service (SM_sugo3_FUService) - Unknown owner - C:\Program.exe
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=+sugo3+Status+Monitor+Service+&btnG=Google+Search
Not a lot of iformation on this one, but I have no doubt it is a backdoor trojan. You can scan that file to find out if you wish:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

5) You had a Vundo infection and I can not tell from here if it has been completely removed or not.

Out of concern for your security, I need to provide this information.
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Thanks

kmayreis

Thank you for all of your help pskelley. I apologize for posting too much information. I read the "Before You Post" rules, I simply got impatient because I had been working on that computer for about 6 hours with very little accomplished. As soon as I am able I will follow your instructions and remove the items you informed me of and repost when this is finished, along with a new hijack this log. We will not be reformatting at this time. Thanks again for your help.

I understand, I would be the same way if one of my computer got infected. I realize how difficult a remote repair is, so if I can get us thinking as alike as possible our chances of success increase.

When you are ready to proceed, start like this:

1) C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper <<< do you own this program?

2) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

(hold that report and log until you finish)

2) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the report from SDFix, the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

kmayreis

Uninstalled Java and reinstalled the newest version. Removed Viewpoint Manager. I do not own Webroot - Spy Sweeper. Ran SDFix as instructed. Log file is posted below. Ran Combofix as instructed. Log file is posted. New HJT log posted seperately. Thank you again!

Thanks for returning you information, Spysweeper is a good program but there are few benefits once the trial is over, and it is a resource user. My suggestion would be to uninstall it. It will also block changes we need to make.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(first is damaged)
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2E9D4C81-9F27-4c14-B804-7B0F6BC88A4F} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {88D758A3-D33B-45FD-91E3-67749B4057FA} - http://dm.screensavers.com/dm/instal...sinstaller.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post the AVG Anti-Spyware scan report and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks

I apologize for the delay. The owner of the computer is currently on vacation. Is there any way we could put this thread on hold for about a week until they return and I am able to pay them a visit and complete the next few steps outlined by pskelley? If we could do that, I would appreciate it. Thank you.
