View Full Version : Stubborn Virus Smitfraud?

I've been fighting this battle for days and finally found this forum. I hope I have all the info in proper order.

My Symantec Antivirus continuously finds "Adware.MediaTicket" and places it in quarantine. However, if I run the scan again, it will be back in its original folder. It's in a file called dohinst-103.0000 in C:Program Files/Common Files/Ystem~1/Ystem~1.

Today I have downloaded and run Vundofix which found and repaired several files. I later ran it in safe mode and it found nothing.

I ran SmitFraudFix.cmd (report below)

I ran AVG AntiSpyware which found and deleted several tracking cookies

I ran an online scan from the link provided, but it found no viruses or problems.

I ran SpyBot until it came up clean in Safe Mode and saved a log (will send log if required)

Before running the HJT log, I changed the name to "scanner.exe" I did get a couple of errors while it was gathering the info. I wasn't smart enough to write them down.

Hello Dan and welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information. "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Posted above and at the top of the forum are the instructions we want followed, my suggestion would be to read and follow them in the future.

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall PurityScan/OuterInfo/Oin or any other program you know does not belong there.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A6807262-1D7A-44AB-947B-23B71E97915C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtuttq.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [smgr] smgr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Aweh] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\YSTEM~1\regsvr32.exe" -vt yazb
O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtuttq - awtuttq.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winexy32 - winexy32.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

smgr.exe <<< delete that file (search for it and delete it if it is there, probably the System32 folder.

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\COMMON FILES~1\YSTEM~1\ <<< delete that folder

7) Follow the directions in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post the AVG Anti-Spyware scan results and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks

DanSw

Thanks, PSKelly. I tried to follow the directions in the "before you post" post. I must have missed something. Sorry.:red: As of now, things seem to be running fine. I haven't had any pop-ups since I've been logged on. That's an improvement already. Thanks.

I deleted all the "Viewpoint" stuff, including a "Viewpoint Media Player." They've all gone to AOH*LL.

Downloaded ATF cleaner and used it as described. BTW, I've been using Window Washer. Is that the same thing?

In Step 4, I was unable to locate PurityScan/OuterInfo/Oin could that have been taken out by the "fix" on HJT?

Step 6: Same as above for smgr.exe and C:\Program Files~1/Common Files~1\Ystem~1\

That's ok, I always post the instructions, things run so much better in a remote repair if both ends know what is expected of them. As far as the junk, sometimes it shows in Add Remove Programs and sometimes it does not. I try to check several ways because I feel it is better to remove it twice than to miss it...lol Having said all of that, I can also say you did a good job:bigthumb: I see no malware in the HJT log and would say if all is running well you are good to go. Let's clean System Restore Files like this.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Some good information for you:

I've reset the restore point and I'm rockin' and rollin'! :D: Thanks so much for your help, pskelly. You and the other volunteers are doing important work. If I'm ever in Clearwater, I owe you a steak! Now, I'm off to read the links you provided so I can avoid this mess in the future. Thanks again.

Sounds good Dan and I am looking forward to that steak. PM to let me know when you will be here and I will clear the day...lol. Your profile does not show where you are located, but assuming it's the USA, have a great Fourth of July. If any questions are unanswered in those links, let me know and I will do my best to get them answered.

Thanks...Phil
