I'd like to think that I'm cautious enough to avoid this one, but it has caught me too. I usually run Firefox without any problems, but almost every time that I must open an IE window, I get the WinFixer popup.

Here is my HijackThis log:

Hello and welcome to the forum. This is the Vundo trojan infection but I also see one marker for Smitfraud? I will proceed with what I think I should do and we will see how it turns out, we may need additional fixes?

1) Please start by downloading VirtumundoBegone http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools/VirtumundoBeGone.exe and save it to your desktop. When you have done this doubleclick on VirtumundoBeGone.exe and follow the instructions. Do not worry if you see a BLUE SCREEN "Fatal Error" Message, it is normal and expected.
When it has finished, reboot and post the log that is created on your desktop called VBG.TXT in your next reply.

2) You have ewido onboard, open the program and update, then choose scanner and scan the complete system. Make sure you delete everything ewido locates unless you are sure it is not bad. It is important that you save the scan report, I need to see it. These instructions may help:
http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/ewidosetup.htm

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(some may not be here)

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {3e9b951e-6f72-431b-82cf-4a9fbf2f53bc} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp3AC5.tmp (file missing)
O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {93C6313C-9DB4-4694-8BD0-E378C573A9AD} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: comexp - C:\WINDOWS\system\comexp.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebcc - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
If you can't see the Prefetch folder use these instructions:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Start > Run > type "cleanmgr" without the quotes, then OK. Allow the program to run and remove what it locates. Restart the computer and post the VBG.TXT, the ewido scan results and a new HJT log.

I wish to point out that you are running Java and it is out of date. This is a security issue. Start > Control Panel > Java > Update.
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe

Thanks...pskelley

Hi Rich, You are very welcome. It looks like VirtumundoBeGone did the job, this is a new fix and the second time I have used it. It is good it is working, because other fixes are much harder.

HJT looks clean:bigthumb: here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Thanks again, Phil. I have indeed read the articles that you suggested, and I'm always willing to increase my personal computer's level of security. It's certainly a moving target, so I greatly value the input of folks like you (and those who you recommend).

Kind regards,
Rich
