Hello:

After four years of college roommate abuse, I think my computer has picked up some problems. After running Spybot search and destroy multiple, it tells me that I have virtumonde and told me to come here for further assistance. I am not too knowledgable about this stuff but have tried to follow protocol as best as possibe. I grealy appreciate any help that can be offered. My symptoms are occasional random pop ups that advertise spyware software and other random junk and a greatly reduced speed of operation in general on my system. I have read the "before you post" and have tried to follow it as best as possible. Here are the results:

Out of concern for your safety and security I need to provide this information.
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Thank you for the quick reply. I guess I am in deeper hole than I thought. I would like to try to move forward and clean this off of my system but would also like to ask your opinion in what the best approach would be and how to perform it. Thanks for the help.

You have an infected Java cache, clean it first like this:

Now download the newest version of Java and then uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

C:\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe <<< rename HJT.exe, call it onwrench.exe if you like. On reboot we should see the hidden Vundo infection.

Let's see if we call kill the backdoor trojan.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Before I take these next steps I would like to ask if you think I would be better off to completely reinstall windows or start fresh in some sort of manner rather than trying to fix what I have. Reading the information you have provided has made me nervous about being able to ever do any online transaction or whatnot on this computer again. If not, I will certainly take these next steps. I have to defer to the experts on this one. Understand these new backdoor trojans designed to steal information, along with rootkits are fairly new. While we have learned to remove them, there is always the possibility of hidden junk that we just can not guarantee the computer will be safe again. This requires more than a new installation of Windows, chances are Windows may not even be infected. We know where the trojan is and we can kill it, but there is just no way to know what the hacker sent along with the trojan. I would pull the plug if I were you and take the time you need to research your decision If you decide to reformat, here is some information to help:

It appears the day of the virus sent by some kid wanting to cause mischief are gone, more any more we are dealing with organized crime online and they appear to originate in the old Soviet Union (often the Ukraine) Brazil and more and more China, but that is certainly not all.

I am sorry that you must be the one to decide, but I can not do that for you.
I can say that I use my computers for bill paying online and limited online puchasing, were I to get this infection I could do nothing but reformat.
