View Full Version : Windows firewall disabled
On startup, my computer says the Windows Firewall is disabled. I've run adaware, AVG anti-virus and Spybot S&D.
Spybot found 2 red problems. Something about firewall notification and antivirus notification being turned off. I fixed the problems, restarted the computer, firewall was fine. The next day, booted the computer and Firewall was disabled.
Ran Spybot in Safe Mode, No problems listed.
What's causing the problem? Is it some malware? My computer takes a very long time to load. I really don't see anything in msconfig Startup that should be causing the problem. I looked at TaskManager and nothing strange is showing

You have issues in your HJT log as follows:
1) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< badly out of date, download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.
Once you have addressed those issues, post a new HJT log, there is a little clutter to remove. Let me know about any malware issues at that point.

:oops: I thought I followed the instructions.
I ran the scan at eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner. Scan Results: Scan Completed. 192461 files scanned. No viruses found
I ran Spybot in safe mode. Fixed one new problem that wasn't there yesterday. Ran it again and everyting is fine.
Restarted the computer and still got the message that firewall is disabled. I clicked the message and when the Security Center opened, the firewall was ON. I am confused.

I only run AVG. Norton was on the computer when I bought it. I just uninstalled Norton Antivirus it in Control Panel Add/ Remove. I also see Live Update from Symantec and Norton WMI. What are they? Should I remove them too?

You may have, but I am dealing with hundreds of folks and start all topics in that manner to be sure we have shared the same instructions.
Restarted the computer and still got the message that firewall is disabled. I clicked the message and when the Security Center opened, the firewall was ON. I am confused.

clarify this for me. Are you running another firewall beside the Service Pack 2ICF? If you are then that firewall needs to be turned off. You should run only one firewall at a time. Clear this up for me in detail please.

Some say you can have more but turn one off, In my personal opinion, this is wrong and that will cause conflictions. If AVG by Grisoft is your antivirus program of choice, I suggest you remove Norton/Symantec from your computer.

It seems to me that when Defender first came out, I installed it and my computer was much slower, so I uninstalled it on this computer (the desktop). I have it on the laptop but I don't have Real-time protection enabled. I reinstalled it on the desktop just recently when I was having the firewall problem. I use the laptop more than the desktop

Should there be some microsoft listng in the Firewall Exception?
I think I'm going to need to shut off system restore, do all the scans in safe mode and then see where I am.

I read online that I should turn off automatic updates and then try to download the update but that didn't work :sad: The update is for Windows defender.
I turned automatic updates back on. I still get the shield with downloading updates 0%
I just found out that I have the router firewall enabled as well as the Windows firewall.

Let me say this, in an emergency a bad restore point is better than no restore point which is what you will have with it turned off if you have a problem. Turning System Restore off will clean all restore points and get rid of any malware that has backed up in them, but it will not make your scans run better and the scans will not remove anything in System Restore, see that link I provided about System Restore earlier.

The hardware firewall in your router can be run at the same time as the Windows Firewall.

When I said: Should there be some microsoft listing in the Firewall Exception? I meant that in Control Panel/Firewall/Exceptions, did there need to be a Microsoft entry. Since the update wasn't downloading, I thought maybe the malware changed a setting there.
I've been using my laptop instead of the desktop that has the problem. I'll reply when I finish all the suggestions you mentioned in the earlier post.

Thanks for the feedback, in the Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions Tab...I have no such program in my list. I see programs can be added. Keep in mind I do not use the Windows Firewall. Since I understand it monitors incoming but not outgoing, I prefer Zone Alarm Free which monitors traffic in both directions.
In your case the hardware firewall in your router does the job and the WF is just a backup for you.

IE is much faster now once it loads but it's still taking a long time when I first get on the computer.
The firewall notice balloon has either been appearing and disappearing oor not showing at all lately. YAY! AVG gives the message that I don't have the latest update when I do. The icon is grayed in the on startup. That and the firewall messages were the reasons I thought I had malware. Since the online scan and spybot both showed no threats, what next?
BTW, after I did the System Restore, the downloading 0% problem was fixed. But I still have the yellow sheild saying I have updates but I'm too chicken to install them.

I only run AVG. Norton was on the computer when I bought it. I just uninstalled Norton Antivirus it in Control Panel Add/ Remove. I also see Live Update from Symantec and Norton WMI. What are they? Should I remove them too?

You must be able to understand that it is difficult to troubleshoot issues when it is not know which of those issues may be caused by conflictions between competing antivirus programs. I usually do not even start until this issue is resolved because of this.
The leftovers can be removed manually by disabling the services, stopping the running programs and manually removing the related folder and files.
I can also offer you the tool to do this that Symantec supplies, but you must use the tool at your own risk.
Please read and follow the directions carefully.

When Symantec/Norton is gone from the HJT log and you are running only one updated Antivirus program, post a new HJT log and let me know about your malware issues at that point.

Is my goal to get rid of anything that's Norton or Symantec?
And how do I get rid of the 023 item below when HJT couldn't remove it?

Example:

Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to SymWMI Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
Once the service is Disabled, delete the folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\
Once the folders have been deleted, use HJT to remove any items that remain in the HJT log.
Will the Symantec tool do that?
