View Full Version : Can Not Open System Restore
For the past week I've been trying to fix my computer from malware / spyware ...And I think I might have made it worse. I had a pop up coming up that said "Your privacy is in danger" and was tempting me to install anti spyware programs, which I of course Denied. So I ran a Free Trial of PCillin Trend Micro, also ran these :
Trend micro house call
Norton Online scan
AVG Free Virus Scan
Spy Bot
Ad-Aware (Used it before spybot.. Might have done damage to machine)
Also installed hijack Trend Micro
Here is the problem, my computer kept getting slower and slower, until I couldn't run windows at all... So I rebooted, tried hitting F10 to go into system restore... It failed to work.. So i booted into safe mode. It worked and I was able to do many other virus checks and now I am able to get on to here. I also am not able to open System Restore from start/program files/accessories/system tools/
This is the error I get when I attempt to open:
The application or DLL C:\windows\apppatch\acgeneral.dll is not a valid windows image.
and after I click ok, I receive another error:
C:\windows\winsxs\x86_Microsoft.windows.common-controls........comctl32.dll (I skipped a few words)
So I read a post where someone was told to install Debugging tools..and I did that as well..Help me before I make it worse :).
I also used to get popups from (and they attempted to install :)
Udefender
Win anti spyware (I think thats what it was)
Privacy Protector.

There is a possibliity you also have a vundo infection and that Smitfraudfix will not remove this infection? That being the case we will use the instructions at Bleeping Computer, but let's start like this, and I suggest you keep the computer offline until it is clean, the junk will download more.
1) C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< rename HJT.exe, call it ItsTip.exe or whatever you wish. If Vundo is present we should see it in the next HJT log.
2) It is very important that you post and and all error messages word for word. I can not research them unless you do.
3) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Let's see how much of the junk Smitfraudfix will remove.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running.

Going back and reviewing, you indicate Ad-aware may have done damage to the computer? Why do you believe that? Was something removed you think caused it, because we may be able to put back what was rmoved.
C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exe <<< this is a new program, did you purchase it? I run Ad-Aware free and I am undicided if I will bother installing that program? If this program qorks like the one I have, you should be able to open the Quarantine Manager (lock) to see what was removed by the program.
I am understanding you have had a problem getting out of safe mode, you are right, this could require that you reinstall the Operating System, but if you prefer we will do what we can to troubleshoot these issues once the malware is gone. Understand also, I can not see everything when you post a log in safe mode, so I will need a look at your uninstall list to see if any malware in installed I can't see. Let's get rid of the rest of the junk first and go from there.
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

4) Run Clean Manager

5) add/remove in the control panel.
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)
Post the uninstall list and a new HJT log.
Besides the Windows issues you are have, let me know if you are experiencing any malware issues you can describe. What I can see looks clean.
Please post any error messages you receive at this point. I must have them word for word, nothing missing. If you still can not get out of safe mode, please tell me exactly what happens when you resart the computer. Provide any information you think will help and I will see what I can do before sending you to a Windows XP specialist.

Umm, I get a DLL Error, i wrote it down earlier.. Hang on i'll type it out for you.. I can't do much after that. They pop up, I get tons of Kaspersky alerts and it freezes my computer up.

No more malware issues when i boot up my system.. Haven't had a problem with that in a while. I think there is vital system issues here I think is what i'm having problems with. My system restore will not work. I wish I had a disc to restore. I have all my personal files backed up to an external hard drive. I wish I could wipe everything clean. I'm getting a new laptop next week. This thing is old, but i need to fix it up for my parents to use.

Oh, My, God.I went into safe mode and turned off kaspersky on startup.FIXED EVERYTHING. Well.. not technically. But Idon't get ANY errors. And I haven't had trouble with ANYTHING yet. Amazing...Now I'm not on safe mode :) Now I should be able to take appropriate actions. Thanks for all the help btw. I think it may have fixed a lot of things. Although I don't know what I did :P.

Sounds like we are making progress, keep an eye open for error messages fron Windows and I would appreciate a look at a HJT log in Normal Mode.
Report any malware issues also, and I suggest you continue correcting issues I pointed out, especially get Media Tickets off your computer.

Haha, yes I did get those things off the machine already, I followed all the instructions previously, sorry forgot to mention that in previous post. Just so happy its fixed. NO Error messages, STILL! I have yet to run anything but msn and mozilla. But I will keep updated....

Your HJT log looks to be clean of malware:bigthumb: before we close you I would like to run a Kaspersky online scan for a second opinion.
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Then post it here.
