Hello,

I'm new to these forums. Thank you in advance for your assistance. You folks have set up a remarkable resource for help here.

A HJT log is included at the end of this post.

Here is a bit of history of first:

Computer problems started on 7/8/2007, after... <gulp, I'll be honest>... I downloaded and ran a file I shouldn't have. I have included a log of events Zone Alarm recorded at that time, which might show detail helpful for assessment. According to Zone Alarm alerts, the file RETADPU2000352.EXE attempted several suspicious actions that I at first allowed (big mistake) then blocked. I have since searched for and deleted all instances of RETADPU2000*.EXE manually. I then performed scans with the following programs, not necessarily in the order listed and after loading updates for latest definitions (...too late for immunization, darn it).

1) SPYBOT - found and fixed these four items, related to Virtumonde:
Virtumonde: Text file - C:\WINDOWS\wr.txt
Virtumonde: Settings - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSMGR
Virtumonde: Executable - C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\removalfile.bat
Virtumonde: Library - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winopn32.dll

I have performed SpyBot checks a few times since, including once in SafeMode, and no problems were found.

2) AVG FREE - found and deleted
C:\Temporary Internet Files\ContentIE5\WT270927\adfcook[1]

3) Zone Alarm's anti-spyware tool (no problems found),

4) Symantec's Virtumonde Removal Tool (found nothing).

5) Attempted a system restore to a point before infection. Windows was unable to perform the restore.

6) Attempted to run Trend Micro's online scanner several times. Getting the scan to start was unsuccessful.

7) Ran eTrust's online scanner with the following results:

eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Scanned July 13, 2007 ~ 1:20 AM

Virus scan finished. No viruses found.
Scan Results: Scan Completed. 106470 files scanned. No viruses found.

File Infection Status Path
- No Infections

Scanned again - July 13, 2007 ~ 1:32AM

Virus scan finished. No viruses found.
Scan Results: Scan Completed. 106440 files scanned. No viruses found.

File Infection Status Path
- No Infections

The following symptoms persist:

Each time the computer is started, and without a connection to the internet, 'something' tries to load a web page in IE and cannot detect an internet connection. A dialog presents the option for connecting to the internet or staying offline. For a few day's selecting "Stay Offline" seemed to prevent 'evil' pop-ups. Now, no matter what I select, (even offline) a web page opens in IE - unless I do not respond to the dialog "Web page unavailable while offline" and leave it open. When the computer is connected to the internet, a dialog appears with a goofy "celebrity" offer (same one each time), then bogus web pages open related to web content that I have legitimately loaded. For instance, during an online virus scan, bogus security-related pages open in new windows or tabs, using whichever browser I'm using at the time. The pop-ups seem to become more frequent with increased internect connection time.

Here is an example of the type of URL that the 'something' loads:

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)
I'm Markka and I will be helping you with your malware issues.

I'll check your HijackThis log. Right now I'm MRU Undergrad, everything that I post to you must be checked by

Hello Markka,

Thank you for your reply. :) I am in no hurry and glad to be a part of your experience with MRU (an impressive web site itself). I look forward to this process.

My computer is usually part of a very small home network. For now, I am keeping the computer disconnected from the network because I don't know if attached computers are at risk. If it fits in, I hope to learn more about this.

Hello :)

Rename HijackThis.exe to Scanner.exe by doing the following;

Navigate to here; C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
Right-click on the HijackThis.exe
Choose from the pull-down menu; "Rename"
And now Rename HijackThis.exe to Scanner.exe
When you're renamed HijackThis, then open it..
Take a fresh HijackThis log (Do a system scan and save a log file)
Post the fresh HijackThis log to here.

After AVG fixed the aforementioned files, it seemed as though the problem had stopped. I had several wonderful hours of unfettered surfing. :bigthumb:

Then, as soon as I opened IE (I mostly use FireFox), the evil pop-ups started again.

Yes, I know that. I'll give you cleaning instructions as soon as possible :)

Hello :)

Please don't run anymore scanners or fix anything until I tell to you!

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Thank you, Markka. Please pardon the premature scanning and fixing. I have configured all my security software to not do any automatic scans, and I'll sit on my hands ;) with running scans until you give me the okay. :)

Hello :)

Before we'll continue I would like you to also upload few malware files for further inspection.

Make your hidden files visible:
Go to My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Click the View tab.
Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.
Please go here (http://www.uploadmalware.com/) to upload a suspicious file for analysis.
Enter your username from this forum
Copy and paste the link to this thread
Click "Browse" on the 1. field.
Browse to the following file and click the file with your mouse, press "Open"
"Insert the path here!"

In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
Click on Send File
Thank you :)

Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
Copy&Paste the 1 entry below into the top 1 box

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fccdaww.dll

Click Add Files and Click Close Window
Click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.

:) Thank you so much for your time and for further instructions. :)

I uploaded the file, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fccdaww.dll to uploadmalware.com ...
(Was that correct of me to do? :red: In that part of the instructions, I assumed you were referring to the same file you wanted me to remove with VundoFix.)
... and also completed removal of the same file with VundoFix.

Hi Markka :),

I noticed that my version of Java is not current, and that that's not good. Is it okay for me to update Java at this point?

If so, I understand from reading a very recent post on this forum that these are the instructions:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and save it to your desktop.
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2...allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Hello :),

I have performed all the steps you requested:
1) Downloaded AVGAS and updated signatures.

2) Performed HJT scan and 'fixed' six items.

3) Downloaded and ran ATF-cleaner for Firefox.

4) Rebooted in Safe Mode.
I have a question about booting up in safe mode. After I select the option to run Windows in Safe Mode, the next screen says to choose which operating system to use. The only one listed is, "Microsoft Windows Whistler Personal." Is this normal? (I don't recall seeing this before.)

5) Performed AVGAS scan in safe mode, as instructed.
There was a problem when AVGAS tried to "Apply all actions" to files embedded in .rar files. I am not sure what to do about this. What do you suggest?

6) Posted logs. (AVGAS log follows in next posts.)

Hello :)

I have a question about booting up in safe mode. After I select the option to run Windows in Safe Mode, the next screen says to choose which operating system to use. The only one listed is, "Microsoft Windows Whistler Personal." Is this normal? (I don't recall seeing this before.)
I think this is normal, because you got in safe mode. :)

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clean temp files from your computer.

Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Kaspersky online scanner works only with Internet Explorer!

Please run an online scanner with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hello :),

I have:
Deleted VundoVix Backups folder
Cleared Restore Points
Removed all old versions of Java
Installed of latest version of JavaMy computer seems to be running normally, and a bit speedier too. :bigthumb: Thank you!

The unwanted pop-ups and take-over of my browsers stopped happening after VundoFix successfully removed the fccdaww.dll file.
Has there been any feedback about the analysis of that file from uploadmalware.com?

Here is the latest HJT log:

Hello :)

Has there been any feedback about the analysis of that file from uploadmalware.com?
I don't know, because I'm not a member at uploadmalware.com, but I'm in the future vundofix will remove that file.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial63.html)

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic405.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial60.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
