Hi there. I've been stuck with this for about two weeks and I thought I might seeks some assistance here. I haven't taken any steps on my own to get rid of this; I didn't want to make matters worse. Any help/suggestions would be most appreciated!

What program is showing you this item and what exactly are the symptoms that you are experiencing? You have not supplied a lot of information and you HJT log is showing little.

Okay- I am having pops-ups (alot of them) whenever i'm using IE. The frequency seems to have gotten progressively worse. At first, I'd get 3 or 4 and then I'd get a McAffee window popping up saying a buffer overflow had been blocked. I've noticed within the last week that I'm getting more pop-ups at a quicker pace and McAffee isn't blocking them as before. As a result, IE is giving me the "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. After running spybot, the only thing it picks up (aside from tracking cookies) is "Smitfraud-C.CoreService", and it cannot remove the 3 of the 4 entries associated with it.

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\ <<< Java is BADLY out of date and it has not gotten you infected now, it is just a matter of time. Download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

I just did this as you said.

2) You are running HJT from Temporary Internet Files and this is not safe, I prefer it here: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. Additional instructions if you need them:

Once you get it there, rename HJT.exe, call it jinxpr00f.exe or whatever you wish. After a reboot a hidden Vundo infection will show if you are infected.

Reinstalled as you specified, and no infection showed up. The latest log is as follows:

Thanks for returning your information, first I would request you read the instructions again and follow them including this one:
All logs should be copy/pasted into topic and not attached unless requested by helper in that format.
Please avoid color, these are harder for me to to read.

1) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP, Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

2) Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks for the combofix log :bigthumb: it is showing nothing so you can remove the program from your computer.

I am seeing no malware in the HJT log, please give me a report, let me know about any malware issues.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
